[NEW YORK] [RADICAL RIGHT] [GERSON, Simon] RANKIN, Ainsworth "Doc" (illus)
Broadside: No Man Can Serve Two Masters! All Americans: Protestants Jews Catholics Unite!
Brooklyn: International Catholic Truth Society 1938. Broadside 18-1/2" x 9". Printed recto-only on newsprint. Text in single column beneath cartoon graphic signed "Doc Rankin". Single horizontal fold; paper slightly toned and eroded at margins not approaching text; complete and Good. Right-wing broadside attacking Simon Gerson who had recently been appointed Assistant to Manhattan Borough President Stanley Isaacs. Gerson 1909-2004 was the first openly Communist politician to hold an appointed office in New York; despite vicious attacks such as this from various right-wing groups he succeeded in holding on to his post for three years. Following WW2 in which he served honorably Gerson returned to politics once again becoming embroiled in controversy when the Tammany machine blocked his appointment to fill deceased communist City Councilman Pete Cacchione's seat.<br /> <br /> The graphic reproduced from the Brooklyn "Daily Eagle" shows Gerson conducting city business while a placid Josef Stalin oversees his work from the shadows. The drawing is signed by Doc Rankin a freelance editorial cartoonist who in addition to his long service on the Eagle is widely believed to have been the real-life figure behind the anonymous "Mr. Prolific" one of the most-published illustrators of pornographic "Tijuana Bibles" in the 30s and 40s. [NIEROP, Adriaen van or Simon van MIDDELGEEST?]. WAER-MOND, Yemand van (pseudonym).
Codicille van de Nederlandsche Oorloghe waer in sy eenighe Vrienden Wel-Doenders ende Dienaren in haer principael Testament van date den tweeden Februarij 1609. vergheten zynde . den 12. Martij des selven jaers. Noch een Wellecom-Dicht van het Bestandt. Noch andere ghedichten van bestandighe vrede.
Franc end al" = Amsterdam: Frederijck de Vrije" 1609. Disbound. Small 4to. Poems celebrating the truce with Spain though attributed to a former opponent of the truce with the Dutch poems in textura types and Latin marginal notes in roman. A political pamphlet in verse celebrating peace and dated less than a month before the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The main poem takes the form of a "codicil" to War's "last will and testament." It recites the various legacies both good and bad that the War has left to people on both sides and even to people and countries not directly involved in the fighting. Asher mistakenly lists the present pamphlet as no. 11 in the Bye-Korf series: it was published about six months after the Bye-Korf was banned but later collectors often inserted it and the associated Testament in place of the earlier Testament which should have been Asher 26-28/10. The author place of publication and publisher given on the title-page are all word plays "Yemand van Waer-Mond" for example suggesting "someone of honest mouth." The STCN attributes the pamphlet with a query to Nierop who propagandized against peace in one of the Bye-Korf pamphlets Asher 28/37 but rejoiced in it once it came. Alden & Landis attributes the associated Testament ofte Wtersten Wille to Middelgeest. The poet's four-line verse on the back of the title-page is signed with the motto: "Yet Meer en mocht/Min en docht Niet."A nice view of popular feelings about the Truce just before it formally took effect. With some tears at the fold of the outermost bifolium and only slightly browned otherwise a very good copy.l Asher 26-28/11; Knuttel 1584; Simoni W 34; Tiele 751; OCLC WorldCat 3 copies. [Old School Press] Motion, Andrew, poet; Simon Brett, illustrator
A Long Story
Bath: Old School Press 2001. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 131 of 230 copies signed by the poet and illustrator. From the press: "For the fifth title in our series of the work of contemporary British poets we were fortunate to have the opportunity of printing an extended four-part poem by Poet Laureate emeritus Andrew Motion. He was England's Poet Laureate from 1999-2009. Writing of his work Motion says 'A Long Story assembled itself over several years into a loose sequence of four sections none of them rhymed and all are written in a very loose rambling rhythm. I began with the wish to identify certain memories in my childhood which I've always considered to be 'spots of time' - ie moments which have a self-contained interest and drama - and ended up with scenes which anticipate even predict certain moods and attitudes I have as an adult. 'To complement Motion's narrative style we turned once more to leading wood-engraver Simon Brett whose ability to tell a story in a single sinewy image we greatly admire and who cut four wood-engravings for the book.'' <br /> <br /> For this elegant book the text was hand-set in 14pt Fournier italic and printed on 170gsm Magnani mould-made paper. Brett's engravings were printed from the wood onto dampened paper. The book was bound by Rachel and Richard James. It is quarter-bound with yellow cloth on the spine with a rich dark green hand-made paper from the Larroque mill covering the boards black Canson end-papers and the title embossed in gold on the front cover. In fine condition. Measures 8 x 11 inches. Unpaginated 44 pages PRI/082823. Old School Press hardcover

[Pallas, Peter Simon ]
Russian folk paintings Seven water color with three entitled 'Kosak of Tsherkash' 'Talmak' & 'Tirgishian Tartar'
1770. Paintings. Otherwise very good condition. Seven expertly painted watercolors of Eastern Russian folk people in traditional dress. These are most likely painted for or copied from one of Pallas' books "Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs" 1771-76 later published in English "Journey Through Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire". They all bear penciled numbers in the lower right possibly correlating with plates in a Pallas work. <br /> <br /> Three paintings have manuscript captions in ink: 'Kosak Woman of Tsherkash' 'Tirgishian Tartar' 'A Kalmak of the lower class.' All are numbered in pencil in lower right corner: 1 3 18 56 65 67 68 . The image "Kosak Woman" caption is followed by an ink name "Pallas". The other 4 watercolors have no captions and subjects include a Woman with a cape Man with floor length fur lined coat and hat Man with long beard golden helmet and fur lined coat; and a Woman carrying a basket on her back and under her arm.<br /> <br /> Four paintings are 8 x 10" other 3 are 7 x 9" painted on thick paper with two ink border lines some thin and some thick. The image of the Tirgishian Tartar has four small holes in the corners. All have been removed from an album. <br /> <br /> Peter Simon Pallas 1741 - 1811 German naturalist who advanced a theory of mountain formation and by the age of 15 had outlined new classifications of certain animal groups.<br /> <br /> In 1761 he went to England to study natural-history collections and to make geological observations. He was appointed professor of natural history at the Imperial Academy of Sciences St. Petersburg in 1768. About the same time he joined a scientific expedition to Russia and Siberia. For the next six years he traveled across the length and breadth of the vast empire. He found a wide distribution of mammoth and rhinoceros fossils including some with their hairy hides preserved in the Siberian ice. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1774 with a great amount of data and many fossil specimens but he had ruined his health. He published his major findings from the expedition in three volumes Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des russischen Reichs 1771-76 later published in English "Journey Through Various Provinces of the Russian Empire". His chief geological contribution based largely on his study of the Ural and Altai mountain ranges of Siberia was the recognition of a temporal sequence of rocks from the center to the flanks of a range. unknown

Deutsch, Neumark, and Grossman were leaders of the Reform movement at the time; Bloch went on to edid the Journal of Jewish Bibliography and to head the Jewish devision at NYPL. Jennie Mannheimer (1872-1943), aka Jane Manner, was an American elocutionist, acting coach, and teacher of speech and drama. Her father, Sigmund Mannheimer, was a professor and librarian at Hebrew Union College
.Jennie Mannheimer was one of the first two women to earn a bachelor's degree in Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College, in 1888
.[She] was director of the drama department at the Cincinnati College of Music from 1900 until 1907. She also ran her own school, the Cincinnati School of Expression (1894-1912). In New York, She was founder of the Drama Recital Club, and a member of the New York Drama League, the New York League of American Pen Women, the Council of Jewish Women, and the Temple Emmanu-El Women's Auxiliary (Wikipedia). Ibriah, a Cincinnati organization committed to Hebrew conversation and literature, was, not surprisingly, also a center of Zionist support, despite the Reforms dominance in local Jewish thought and culture. Here the host a gathering to meet leading modern Hebrew writer Nahum Sokolov. Joan Friedman notes in a 2006 article on Solomon Freedhof at HUC during the period that, The hot issue of the day during Freehofs student and early faculty years at the College was Zionism. It was discussed in the Literary Society and everywhere else on campus. During the 19111912 academic year, Silver and Professor Neumark had founded a Hebrew-speaking club, Ibriah, of which Marcus was a member, though he does not mention whether Freehof was also. The CCAR had taken a firm stance against Zionism as early as 1897, although individual rabbis were outspoken Zionists.104 Kohler was a committed anti-Zionist. Nevertheless, despite his best efforts, between 1910 and 1920 the student body gradually shifted to an overwhelmingly pro-Zionist perspective as its demographics changed, world events furthered the Zionist cause, and Louis Brandeis popularized a nonideological Zionism acceptable to American Jews, including many Reform Jews (AJAJ, LVIII, Nr ½, p. 21).
