‎Measure for Measure Act V. Scene I.‎

‎London: John and Josiah Boydell 1790. 1803. Original copper engraving 44 x 60 cm overall sheet 55 x 68.5 cm. Tissue guard to verso. From "A Collection of Prints. Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare." published by Boydell London 1803. In 1789 the publisher John Boydell opened the Shakespeare Gallery an exhibition space in London's Pall Mall showcasing paintings that exclusively represented scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The Gallery was a bid to revive 'history painting' the practice of depicting scenes from the Bible mythology or the classics in contemporary British art a genre thought to be of great public benefit because of its morally instructive messages. What better unifying theme for such a project than the works of Shakespeare which had become so popular and so integral to British identity by the mid-18th century The Gallery opened in May 1789 with 34 canvases by 18 British artists. By the next year there were 55 paintings and in 1796 the total was 84 along with dozens of 'Small Pictures'. Once the exhibition was mounted reproductive engravings of the paintings produced by an in-house team of 46 printmakers were available to purchase either as a large portfolio of 90 prints or as a luxurious illustrated edition of the plays. The British Library London: John and Josiah Boydell, 1790. [1803]. unknown‎

‎Bordeaux: Jaques L'Aveugle 1710 c1742. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4". Not Stated. A very scarce early imprint of this controversial work of enlightenment fiction being an early example of Utopian fiction and a precursor to Robinson Crusoe in the 'voyage imaginaire' tradition. Rosenberg edition D with vignette of nude woman to title page and frontispiece portrait of Jacques Masse. Despite title page stating the date at 1710 Rosenberg believes the work to have been published no later than 1742 with the first edition published sometime between 1714 and 1717.Previous scholarship from Professor Storer argued this variant D was in fact the first edition but this was later proven to be incorrect with Rosenberg edition A with the celestial globe now widely considered to be the first. Duodecimo. Signatures run a2 2 A-X12 Y2. 1 incorrectly signed as 2 with 2 unsigned as called for. Collated complete. In contemporary calf. An early example of the Utopian novel Voyages et Avantures de Jacques Masse tells the story of a man who upon being shipwrecked discovers paradise. The protagonist learns the local language in order to preach Christianity but the locals dismiss the teachings with particular distain towards what they considered to be an unjust God. The work was extremely controversial upon publication and was quickly banned notably due to its critique of Catholicism. In contemporary calf. Externally smart with slight loss to spine label. Slight rubbing to joints and extremities. Slight cracking to upper joint but boards remain firm. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and marginal age toning. Very Good Jaques L'Aveugle hardcover‎

If you were black in America at the start of the Revolutionary War whom would you want to win In response to a declaration by the last governor of Virginia that any rebel-owned slave who escaped and served the King would be emancipated tens of thousands of blacks voted with feet escaping to fight beside the British. Originally designed to break the plantations of the American South this military strategy instead unleashed one of the great exoduses in American history.
