A celebrated utopian-philosophical imaginary voyage that went through numerous editions and translations in the 18th century. It was originally attributed to the Bishop of Ireland and prolific writer-philosopher George Berkeley. Berington was not identified as the author until 1935. Lee Ellison in his essay on Gaudentio di Lucca in the PMLA 1935 comments on Berington's believable realistic narrative compared with earlier imaginary voyages: "The earlier utopias lacked concreteness . . . Berington's Mezzorania on the other hand is as real as Mexico and Peru; and integrated with his philosophy and social theory is a narrative that runs the whole gamut from idyllic romance to luscious intrigue and bloody adventure." A fictional story about an Italian man who discovers a mythical paradise called Mezzoramia in the African desert. The author Simon Berington 1680-1755 was a Catholic priest.
