KLUGEL GEORG SIMON 1739 1812.
Analytische Dioptrik in zwey Theilen. Der erste enthalt die allgemeine Theorie der optischen Werkzeuge: der zweyte die besondere Theorie und vortheilhafteste Einrichtung aller Gattungen von Fernrohren Spiegelteleskopen und Mikroskopen.
Leipzig:: Johann Friederich Junius 1778. 1778. 2 parts in 1 vol. Sm. 4to. xxiv 303 1 pp. Title vignette 4 folding engraved plates with 32 figs. head and tail-pieces. Original half calf decorative boards; very worn joints splitting extremities well worn. Title page signed by J. G. Kohler; bookplate of Ing. Dr. Edmund Neusser. First edition dedicated to the famous mathematician Leonhard Euler 1707-1783. Klugel based his writings on that of Euler's work on optics. In his parts VII and VIII he deals with the telescope and especially the microscope. / Euler's own work on the theory of the achromatic microscope was written as early as 1762 and 1771 when he dealt with the subject more fully. In 1774 Euler's pupil and friend Nicolas Fuss wrote a little book on how to construct an achromatic microscope. Klugel translated that work in 1778 and then followed that with this more thorough treatment being his Analytische Dioptrik also 1778. Due to the crudeness of design of the objective made in 1791by Francois Beeldsnyder 1755-1808 a colonel in the Amsterdam cavalry Mayall asserts and others uphold this view that he feels the discussion of the dates of origin or this instrument are at best unclear. :: Mayall. BALLANCHE Pierre Simon 1776 1847.
Antigone. L'Homme Sans Nom.
Paris:: H.-L. Delloye 1841. 1841. 8vo. 442 6 36 4 30 6 44 4 250 54 pp. Occasional scattered foxing not affecting legibility. Quarter gilt-stamped red leather over red marbled paper-backed boards all edges marbled; cover edges and corners gently rubbed. Near fine. According to a pencil note on the free rear endpaper the ink signature and inscription below is that of Alexis Guignard Comte de Saint-Priest 1805-51 a French diplomat and historian of the Academie Francais. This work contains two stories: Antigone and L'Homme Sans Nom. Antigone a re-working of Sophocles' original story achieved popularity in France because it was seen as a reflection of the suffering of Louis XIV's daughter the Duchesse d'Angpuleme but Ballanche's actual muse was Juliette Recamier a beautiful and brilliant Parisian who hosted a rather famous salon. In her Ballanche perceived "a kindred unhappiness." Her "incapacity for happiness he argued is a sign of the awareness of a fallen creature of its divine origin and its nostalgia for a celestial home" McCalla 49. He saw her beauty as a reflection of her moral perfection. L'Homme Sans Nom centers on a "nameless man" who is on the council that votes for the regicide of Louis XIV in 1793; wary of inflaming political public opinion because of the recent assassination of the Duc de Berry by a Bonapartist Ballanche limited the first 1820 edition of the story to a run of 100 copies. He intended his new work "as advice for the King and a small circle of political leaders" rather than the general populace" McCalla 78. Ballanche was a French philosopher who favored a view of history in which mankind achieves "progress through ordeals." Essentially "a past epoch could possess its own rightness and legitimacy even as it had lost the right to continue" which he described in his work Palingenesie Wikipedia. "He is considered by some French critics as a great writer and profound thinker but by others his writings are regarded as mystical and obscure" Thomas 253. McCalla Arthur. A Romantic Historiosophy: the Philosophy of History of Pierre-Simon Ballanche. Leiden The Netherlands: Brill 1998; Thomas J. "Ballanche Pierre-Simon." OHM Georg Simon 1789 1854.
Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes nach welchem Metalle die Contakteletricitat leiten.
Leipzig:: Joh. Ambrosius Barth 1825. 1825. Contained in: Annalen der Physik und Chemie Vol. 4. J. C. Poggendorff ed. pp. 79-83. 8vo. 12 476 pp. 4 folding charts 6 engraved plates 2 folding. Modern brown marbled boards printed paper spine label; extremities rubbed. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon institutional exlib stamps. Very good. FIRST EDITION. THE PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT OF OHM'S LAW; HIS FIRST PUBLICATION. This short article in Annalen der Physik und Chemie preceded Ohm's book Die Galvanische Kette Mathematische Bearbeitet 1827 and is his first published scientific paper May 1825. Ohm began publishing his electricity researches in 1825 with his Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes nach welchem Metalle die Contakteletricitat leiten a paper in which he sought to find a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force exerted by a current-carrying wire and the length of the wire. Although this paper contained some fundamental errors it was remarkable for its direct foundation on experiment a characteristic of all Ohm's early papers. In February and April of the following year Ohm published two important papers dealing separately with the two major aspects of his theory of galvanic electricity which he would later unify in his landmark Die galvanische Kette. DSB. "From the zinc and copper poles of a voltaic pile he ran two wires A and B the free ends of which terminated in small mercury-filled cups M. and N; between M and another cup O he ran a third wire C. Together A B and C formed what he called the 'invariable conductor' to distinguish it from one of the seven wires of different lengths that when placed in the circuit between O and N constituted the 'variable conductor'. . . over wire C Ohm hung the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance which served to measure the electromagnetic force exerted when one of the variable conductors completed the circuit. . . Tabulating these values against the lengths of the wires he found that his data were well represented by the formula v = 0.41 log 1x where v is the loss in force and x is the length of the wire in feet." DSB. In modern application the formula is simplified to v = i r; voltage being equal to current and resistance. Reference: DSB Vol. X p. 187. Joh. Ambrosius Barth, 1825. hardcover books

Milton John. Illustrated by Richard Westall. Plates engraved by F. P. Simon.
The Poetical Works of John Milton. With a Life of the Author by William Hayley 3 Volumes
London: Printed by W. Bulmer & Co. Shakspeare Printing-Office for John & Josiah Boydell and George Nicol. From the Types of W. Martin. 1794 1795 1797. First Edition. Full Gilt and Blindstamped Morocco. Near Fine. Folio 32 by 26 cm. cxxxiii 3 213 286 300 pp. 32 hand-colored mezzotint plates within the 3 volumes one plate folding. Among them are three reproductions of Milton portraits including Milton as an infant as a boy and the famous Romney painting of the blind Milton dictating to his daughters this plate being the folding one. To our knowledge this copy of the Boydell Milton is an uniquely hand-colored copy. All the plates other than the Milton portraits are the artwork of Westall. These have an unmistakable affinity to the heroic style of Blake his contemporary. The men and even the women can have exaggerated bulging muscles as found most famously in Michelangelo. As invited by Milton's epic light contends with dark and the illustrations serve up a phantasmagoria of imagery with swirling shadows and specters. The hand-coloring is of a very high caliber and we think greatly enriches the mezzotints. The three volumes contain all the major poetry of Milton -- "Paradise Lost" "Paradise Regained" "Samson Agonistes" "Comus" etc. etc. Note all half-titles are present. Binding of a rich russet/crimson straight-grained morocco with bands of blindstamping and gilt-stamping decoration on the boards and gilt decoration within and on the raised bands. Decoration consists of ruling Greek palmettos and more floral rinceaux bands. Conditiion: morocco binding with minor abrasions and wear. One leaf with repaired tear Vol. II pp. 103/4. Pages generally clean plates bright. All volumes tight. Printed by W. Bulmer & Co., Shakspeare Printing-Office, for John & Josiah Boydell, and George Nicol. From the Types of W. Marti books

In Flame of Adventure Yates touches on this famous story and shares his perspective on climbing styles; he also shares tales of personal embarrassment childhood experiences and the different cultures he has encountered in his travels. He looks at himself through the eyes of "civilization" talking about using his climbing skills while working on a construction site and the terror his apparent risks triggers in other workers. Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe
Fourth Estate / Harper Collins 2004. 2nd Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 2nd printing. Jacket lightly toned 1/2 inch tear on jacket corner. 2004 Hard Cover. 532 pp. 8vo. "We've all heard of the Big Bang and yet few of us truly know what it is. Renowned for making difficult ideas much less difficult than they might first appear Simon Singh is our perfect guide to explaining why cosmologists believe that the Big Bang is an accurate description of the origin and evolution of the universe. This highly readable and entertaining book tells the story of the many brilliant often eccentric scientists who fought against the establishment idea of an eternal and unchanging cosmos. From such early Greek cosmologists as Anaximander to recent satellite measurements taken deep in space Big Bang is a narrative full of anecdotes and personal histories. With characteristic clarity Simon Singh tells the centuries-long story of mankind's attempt to understand how the universe came to be a story which itself begins some 14 billion years ago give or take a billion years. Simon Singh shows us that it is within the capability of all of us -- in his expert hands -- to understand the Big Bang: the fundamental theory in all of science and a high point -- perhaps the high point -- of human achievement. Jesty Simon
'Ye Drunken Damozel': The Tavern in the Folly
New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas. Very Good in Very Good- dj. 1932. First American Edition. Hardcover. moderately shelfworn light-colored staining along front joint; jacket has paper loss at several corners various small nicks and tears some soiling and age-darkening to rear panel. Somewhat phantasmagorical novel about a young fellow the bastard son of a sailor who grows up in a grimy quayside London cul-de-sac and falls in love with a "slum-sprite" girl whose lowlife father runs the titular pub. Returning some years later from military service he finds that she's run off and become a celebrated chanteuse; he tracks her down to Rio but she denies her younger identity which of course forces him to spend the rest of the book trying to win her back. The New York Times reviewer although admiring of the writer's style was somewhat nonplussed by the novel calling it "a novel from Mars . . . a strange creation -- terse elliptical obscure peculiarly foreshortened" -- and yet "a rich and varied dish succinctly portioned out and well flavored with excitement." "Simon Jesty" was apparently a pseudonym but for whom I dunno. The author's entire literary output at least under that name seems to have consisted of this novel and one other "River Niger" published in 1935; the only possible clue to his identity is some kind of undefined connection with T.E. Lawrence who provided a strange sort of preface to the latter book based on an advance reading of the manuscript. Great noir-ish jacket illustration by the great Arthur Hawkins Jr. . The work is complete as of itself; it is a part of a larger series of travel journals translated into Italian at the time. In this series this book constitutes Tomo XIII. This copy has the original wraps. These have creases and soiling. Still they can be regarded as well-preserved and of interest from the perspective of publishing practices of the era. <br/><br/> Tipografia Sonzogno e Comp. paperback books

In full colour and illustrated with photos and other reproductions on nearly every page the book represents an accessible account of the short-lived but vibrant private press era of Emery Walker and its social and political context."<BR><br /> - David Farey Forum: the Journal of Letter Exchange <BR><br /> <BR><br /> ".as Simon Loxley says Walker himself seems submerged in the catalogue of his achievements. Loxley's aim is to rediscover the man as well as to situate him in the political and cultural world he inhabited. Loxley is responsible for the visual style of the Hammersmith Terrace houses publicity as well as the design of his revealing and well-illustrated book on its previous owner."<BR><br /> - Sebastian Carter Journal of the Printing Historical Society<BR><br /> <BR><br /> This book is an attempt to give a comprehensive sense of Emery Walker as a person along with his career and achievements in part through correspondence with important people in his life. The letters are accompanied by brief biographies of the correspondents and essays that examine some of the key stages and achievements of Walker's career.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> Walker was a key figure in the world of design typography and printing in the teaching and dissemination of those crafts and in the cultural landscape of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Britain. But the effects of his contributions also spread to the United States and mainland Europe and the ripple of their influence helped determine the design ethos of the twentieth century and beyond. He was called the "Universal Samaritan" his help and advice likened to a vital amenity like water and free of charge.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> In spite of his enormous influence Walker himself has largely remained in the shadows low-key even in the most notorious dispute in typographic history over the rights to the Doves Press type-the pronouncements and self-justifications of his former partner Thomas Cobden-Sanderson dominated the affair. Simon Loxley's category-defying and highly accessible curation of Walker's life presents him in all his dimensions. His creative and inspirational career is highlighted in separate features: the Kelmscott Press the Doves Press the Ashendene and Cranach Presses and his collaborations with Bruce Rogers: the short-lived Mall Press and the aesthetic triumph of The Odyssey of Homer. His contributions to the design and use of two Greek typeface designs Selwyn Image's Macmillan Greek and Robert Proctor's Otter Type are also examined.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> Interwoven with these is a selection of 143 letters spanning 60 years most never previously published that gives us a picture of Walker the man in both his professional and personal life. He seemed to "know everyone" and short biographies of the principal correspondents help contextualize the letters. The result is a fascinating picture of Emery Walker his family and friends the people he knew and the times he lived in: times of aesthetic vision social revolution dreamed and actual and world war culminating in a symbolic poignant valediction to Arts and Crafts as the shadow of another conflict loomed. The texts are accompanied by over 140 images many of them once again never before published.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> Simon Loxley is a graphic designer and a writer on design typography and design history. In addition to this book he is the author of Type is Beautiful: The Story of Fifty Remarkable Fonts Bodleian Library 2016 Printers Devil: The Life and Work of Frederic Warde Godine 2013 and Type: The Secret History of Letters I.B. Tauris 2004. He designed the Emery Walker's House logo and he designed and edited 2006-2016 Ultrabold the Journal of St. Bride Library. He is also the designer of this book.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> Interested in learning about the research behind Emery Walker: Arts.
