Good. Ephemera. Lot of 137 assessment payments from the Brazoria Texas Knights of Honor Lodge No. 2543. Names on the payments are Edward Simon and Gregory Simon and are dated from 1881-1885. Most measure 8 ¼" x 3 ½" and a handful measure 6 ¾" x 3". Many have the embossed seal of the lodge on the left side. Overall good. Moderate toning and light wear; some have a 1/8" hole where the document was put on a spindle. The Knights of Honor K. of H. was a fraternal and beneficiary society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries where members paid using a graded assessment rate older members paid a higher price. The group disbanded in 1916 but was one of the most successful fraternal beneficiary societies of its time. . unknown books

Mildly satiric Western novel set against the backdrop of a small Italian circus that's touring the Wild West in the 1880s. "The circus is owned by an elderly Italian who doubles as clown and his young energetic impudent forthright magnificently alive daughter. Having fallen on hard times the troupe is on its way to the Texas ranch of their new owner when they are joined by a cynical young rogue: Charlie Gallagher. Our heroine is soon cheerfully seduced and loses her heart as well as her virtue to the unregenerate Charlie. Then follows a series of calamitous misadventures which dispose of the gallant company one by one." Over a half-dozen of this author's books were made into movies and this plot really sounds like a wacky 60s comedy-in-waiting -- but alas it wasn't. . The Macmillan Company hardcover books

NOTE: Although there is no "first printing" or "first edition" statement in this copy of the book I believe it to be such and to therefore constitute an exception to the usual Random House practice for their published plays. The printed price $3.95 is present on the front jacket flap along with the printing code 10/66 at the bottom corner of the flap. In addition this was part of a collection in which nearly all the published plays were review copies with publisher's slips to document the fact; although there is no slip present in this copy I believe it to also be a review copy. If someone can show me evidence of a copy that states "first printing" however I will happily stand corrected. . Random House hardcover books
