The first entitled "Savant de huit ans: sciences arts et métiers;" the second entitled "Petit coloriste: de enluminure." Describes the printing trades. With six color plates entitled Peintre frontispiece Sculpture Graveur en taille-douce Relieur Imprimeur en caractères mobiles. Also with color title. Numerous black and white illustrations include the human anatomy and musical scores. Simon-François Blocquel 1780-1863 was a Lille printer and bookseller. Born in Douai he was orphaned and was raised by his aunt who was married to a printer and bookseller of Lille. He became an apprentice in his uncle's printing trade. He worked in association with Lille bookseller Jean-Baptiste Castiaux from 1809 to circa 1835. Blocquel published a number of works related to geography and foreign cultures see Roger J.D. Collins "Simon Blacquel Imagier et Éditeur Lillois" in the Journal de la Société des Océanistes 41 1985. He was active in the Lille business community and he also served on the municipal council of that city from 1820 to 1857. Covers rubbed and scuffed at edges worn at extremities of spine. The first book of its kind Illustrated Periodicals of the 1860s focuses extensively on the illustrated magazine as a distinct form. Illustrated Periodicals provides a new and informative approach to the study of "sixties" periodicals revealing the previously unstudied area of the complex interrelationships between the various parties involved in the production of these magazines: publishers editors artists engravers and authors. It was a milestone not only in that it marked a transmission of Arthurian material based on the Welsh on Wace and on Geoffrey but also because it was the first time the story of Arthur was told in English The verse like Gawain harkens back to the Anglo-Saxon style of poetry: each line has four stresses and contains three alliterating syllables. This edition uses the 1974 Benson edition of the text and on each facing page a translation by Armitage into modern English but also in matching alliterative verse A wonderful feat and enhanced by the Introduction a note on the meter of the original by Simpson and a list of the characters in the narrative. A very rare collection of elaborately decorated letters and numerals designed and engraved by Gius Lanzani "Incisore Calligrafo" in collaboration with a team of other Italian artists and engravers. The collection consists of three sets. Each decorated letter and numeral features an elaborate allegorical design. Obvious examples include: Adam & Eve the Three Fates the The Seven Deadly Sins for numerals 2 3 and 7; and a Gallows a Lion and the Devil for the letters G L and D. Most however are not easy to decipher. Contemporary situations and events are also depicted both humorous and allegorical such as Waterloo for W. Thus we know that the plates were made sometime after 1815. Stunning calligraphy beautifully designed engraved and printed. Very scarce. OCLC locates no copies. Besides his 140 letters written during the Peninsular Campaign there were 40 written during his time at Waterloo. In addition there are three maps of Portugal St. Sebastian region and the parts touching Spain and France. There are a number of letters that show the progress at Waterloo so in a letter of June 15 as commander of the Royal Horse Artillery he is asked at 10 PM to began moving. All of this was complicated by the reorganization on the run of units as numbers fell and others were incorporated into the battle formation. As they approached Waterloo for the first time they were almost fully reorganized and as he look out upon his troops he notes "they made a noble appearance".A very good copy bound in a beautiful 3/4 red morocco over red cloth. raised bands with compartments lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt some tanning to page edges housed within cloth covered slipcase with original gilt cloth depicting a cannon centrally mounted. A Ramble of Six Thousand Miles Through the United States of America
London: E. Wilson Royal Exchange 1832. Octavo. Half-Titleads on verso xii v-viii 360 pages. Howes F93 calls this work "a valuable account of the Illinois and Indiana frontier". The author's real name was O'Ferrall. While de Toqueville's work remains the classic there is much in this fascinating account that is not only more accessible but particularly insightful in that area known as the "new west" usually ending with the Mississippi. He has accounts of Robert Owen and the New Harmony Community the lawlessness which he says should be a warning to those who think merely acquiring land will prevent them from fraud and violence. His account of a wild-eyed preacher who saw in the Cahokia Mounds a proof of the Trinity. I found in reading this remarkable account a condition of life reminiscent of Lincoln's Prairie Years though more violent. For those who think the early American frontier beyond the eastern seaboard was being civilized it is obviously true that the law of those with power connivance and greed determined who would succeed. Lincoln's character and remarkable morality is evinced even more clearly after seeing the world in which he lived. Bound in modern brown cloth paper spine label lettered in black endpapers renewed page edges have toning. A very nice copy. E. Wilson, Royal Exchange unknown books

Norman; 1965: University of Oklahoma Press. First Edition. Octavo. Signed and inscribed by the author. xv 335 pages illustrations maps portraits index. A thorough study of Lincoln's career in the Illinois Assembly where he served four terms and began to distinguish himself in political understanding of how to get things done. Inscribed to the infamous "Dan Rostenkowski" where Simon himself a symbol of virtue wrote in 1967: "To Dan whose leadership in Washington has brought great credit to his name and to our state--with my best wishes--Paul Simon" 1-12-67. When Rostenkowski's deeds came investigation he was sentenced to four years in prison. Mike Royko his constant critic came to his defense only because he said most of the house were guilty of the same exact things. The former President Ford also felt that the case was overblown. President Bill Clinton pardoned him in December 2000. He then began teaching political theory Northwestern University and Loyola University Chicago where his papers are now held.Bound in orange-black cloth spine lettering gilt over black. Very good condition with some discoloring to the margins in a portion of vol. 1. Ownership inscription dated 1938. One of 25 copies all on vélin paper.This copy nearly matches one recorded in the BNF however ours has additional title pages to both parts both of which carry the author's name and also has the supplementary pages 25 bis. - 44 bis. lacking in the BNF copy. First published in 1787 in an edition limited to 15 copies. OCLC locates only a single copy of each edition. Not in Brooks Edizione Bodoniane the publication data is likely fictitious. "On trouve des ex. de ces fables avec les dates de 1787 de 1792" Grasse IV 493. Apparently the text sheets were printed in 1787 & later supplied with new t.-p.'s & preliminary matter when copies were distributed by the author. Simon-Pierre Mérard de Saint-Just 1749-1812 was for a time in charge of the household for the king's brother Louis Stanislas the future Louis XVIII; after retiring in 1783 he devoted his fortune to collecting books and publishing his works in small editions. <br/><br/> unknown books
