SCHROEDER ERV; BILL MCKIBBEN FOREWORD; AN ESSAY BY MARCIA BJORNERUD AND INTRODUCTION BY SIMON J. ORTIZ
The Memory Of Stone: Meditations On The Canyons Of The West
University of New Mexico Press Albuquerque: 2014. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Winner of the 2015 New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for Arts Book This intimate portrait of the Colorado Plateau celebrates the landscape in photographs and writing. Erv Schroeder's photographs bear witness to the primordial forces of the earththe raw power that moved and shifted huge hunks of rock to form natural stone sculptures. Schroeder's prints engage the viewer on an intimate level acting as portals to contemplative worlds inviting the viewer on an inner journey. As further guides to the landscape and its significance he has invited indigenous writersNatanya Ann Pulley Rainy Dawn Esther G. Belin Orlando White and Tacey M. Atsittyto contribute poems that speak about these places. Celebrated Acoma storyteller Simon J. Ortiz introduces the photography and poetry with his musings on stone. In addition an essay by geologist Marcia Bjornerud explores the geology of the region. 8.5 x 8.75 in. 104 pages 62 duotones. Erv Schroeder is a photographer who also works as a user-interface analyst and graphic and web designer. He lives in Oshkosh Wisconsin. His work has been widely exhibited in galleries all over the United States. He has been an artist in residence at the Petrified Forest National Park and a featured artist in F-Stop magazine. "The Memory of Stone takes readers on a visual tour of the Colorado Plateau's 'sonic landscapes'from Utah's Monument Valley to the Petrified Forest. . . . Schroeder's black-and-white photographs offer a surprisingly intimate portrait of these otherworldly places. --High Country News "Erv Schroeder's captivating images of undomesticated lands coupled with poetry by native authors lead you on an expedition through history and humanity. By viewing these mesmeric rock formations the reader gains a more transcendent idea of time and nature. These intimate black-and-white photographs resonate on a profound philosophical level." --World Literature Today "Stunning. . . . Textleaves clean and fine. First English edition of one of the most importent works on electricity ever published representing the discovery of "Ohm's Law" the fundamental law of electrical circuits namely that E electromotive force equals I current x R resistance.

By working with wires of different thickness and lenghts he Ohm found the quantity of current transmitted was inversely proportional to the lenght and directly proportional to the cross-sectional area of the wire. He was in this way able to define the resistance of the wire and in 1827 to show that there was a simple relation between the resistance the electrical potential and the amount of current carried. This came to be called Ohm's law. His name is further immortalized in the fact that the unit of resistance is the ohm. Thus when a current of one ampere passes through a substance under a potential difference of one volt that substance has a resistance of one ohm. Furthermore the unit of conductance which is the reciprocal of resistance is the mho - Ohm's name spelled baxkward. He deferred the systematic exposition of thsi theory to a later work however and limited himself to stating without derivation the two eqautions that constituted its heart: X=kwa/l and u-c = /- x/lawhereX is the strenght of the electric current in a conductor of lenght l cross section w and conductibility Leitungsvermgen k produced by a difference in electric tension a at its end points. By means of the first equation one can .reduce the actual lenght of a wire of whatever cross section and conductibility to the equivalent lenght of one of the wire chosen arbitrarily as a standard. Clean and fine. First editions of the 2 papers recording the discovery of the intermediate vector bosons in 1983 at CERN which marked the culmination of a long effort to unify the theory of weak and electromagnetic forces.

"The W and Z bosoms are the elementary particles that mediate the weak interactions. Their discovery was a major success for what is now called the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Following the spectacular success of quantum electrodynamics in the 1950s attempts were undertaken to formulate a similar theory of the weak nuclear force. This culminated around 1968 in a unified theory of electromagnetism and weak interactions by Sheldon Glashow Steven Weinberg and Abdus Salam for which they shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics. Their electroweak theory postulated not only the W bosoms necessary to explain beta decay butalso a new Z bosom that had never been observed.
The discovery of the W and Z bosons themselves had to wait for the construction of a particle accelerator powerfull enough to produce them. The first such machine that became available was the Super Proton Synchroton where unambigous signals of W bosonss were seen in January 1983 during a series of experiments conducted by Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer. The actual experiments were called UA1 lead by Rubbia and UA2 led by Peter Jenni and were the collective effort of many people. Van der Meer was the driving force on the accelerator end stochastic cooling. UA1 and UA2 found the Z boson a few month later in May 1983. Rubbia and van der Meer were promptly awardes the Nobel Prize in Physics a most unusual step for the conservative Nobel Foundation."Wikipedia. hardcover

Small stamp on verso of plates. Ohm's paper: pp.79-88. Internally fine and clean. First appearance of a paper of outmost importence in the history of electricity - it is Ohm's first scientific paper and it contains the report on the different original experiments sending a current through a variety of test wires that was the foundation for his famous law Ohm's Law. The paper contains the original research material that was to immortalize his name for the mathematical formulation of the law two years later in the well-known work "Die galvanische Kette mathematisch bearbeitet" 1827. - This paper was at the same time published in Schweiggers Journal.

"Ohm's first scientific paper was "Vorlufige Anzeige des Gesetzes." the paper offered. In it he sought a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force excerted by a current-carrying wire and the lenght of the wire.Fromthe zinc and copper poles of a voltaic pile he ran two wires A and B the free ends of which terminated in small mercury-filled cups M and N; between M and another cup O he ran a third wire C. Together AB and C formed what he called the "invariable conductor" to distinguish it from one of the seven wires of different lenghts that when placed in a circuit between O and N constituted the "variable conductor". Among the latter was one "veru thick" wire four inches long and six thinner ones 0.3 line .025" in diameter ranging in lenght from one foot to seventy-five feet. Finally over wire C hung the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance which served to measure the electromagnetic force exerted when one of the variable conductors completed the circuit. He then found that the loss in force was equal to the difference between the normal force and the lesser force occasioned by one of the other wires divided by the normal force. Tabulating these value against the lenghts of the wires he found that his data were well represented by the formula v=0.41 log 1x where v is the loss in force and x is the lenght of the wire in feet."DSB X p.187. - This expression is the preliminary formula for his famous relations between voltage amperage and resistance R=V/I.
Parkinson "Breakthrough" 1825 P. - Ronald's Library p. 376.

The volume contains other importent papers in the history of chemistry and physics Berzelius F. Entire volume: 2 253 53 XI 1 711 pp. First printing of Simon Kuznet's landmark paper on the volatile aspects of inequality over time today referred to as the Kuznets Curve one of the most famous influential and discussed economic theories from the 20th century especially within development economics. In 1971 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics "for his empirically founded interpretation of economic growth which has led to new and deepened insight into the economic and social structure and process of development".

"One of the major stylized facts about long-run processes of economic development is the Kuznets Curve - the inverse-U shaped pattern of inequality. In a seminal paper the present Kuznets argued that as countries developed income inequality first increased peaked and then decreased and documented this using both cross-country and time-series data." Acemoglu The Political Economy of the Kuznets Curve.

"In this work Kuznets identified a new economic era-which he called "modern economic growth"-that began in northwestern Europe in the last half of the eighteenth century. The growth spread south and east and by the end of the nineteenth century had reached Russia and JAPAN. In this era per capita income rose by about 15 percent or more each decade something that had not happened in earlier centuries. One of Kuznets's more startling findings concerns the effect of economic growth on income distribution. In poor countries he found economic growth increased the income disparity between rich and poor people. In wealthier countries economic growth narrowed the difference. In additionKuznets analyzed and quantified the cyclical nature of production and prices in spans of fifteen to twenty years. Such trade cycles while disputed are often referred to as "Kuznets cycles." Library of Economics and Liberty

Kuznets was a professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania 1930-1954 Johns Hopkins University 1954-1960 and Harvard University 1960-1971. Heidelberg Karl Groos 1819. Contemp. marbled boards. Title-label with gilt lettering probably of more recent date. A stamp on titlepage. XIV2207 pp. Very light browning to a few leaves and margins otherwise fine. Scarce first German edition of this ground-breaking work. It is the translation of Laplaces's work from 1814 with the title:"Essai philosophique sur la probabilits" as a separate work of Laplaces introduction to the second edition of his "Theorie analytique des probalits". "It contains the famous passage to the effect that the future of the world is completely determined by the past and that one possessed of the mathematical knowledge of the state of the world at any given instant could predict the future." Morris Kline.
"The long introduction that Laplace added to the second edition of Theorie analytique. was also published separately in the same year as "Essai philosophique sur les probabilits".This essay was extremely popular and influential unlike the "Theorie analytique." it required no guide and was widely read and quoted. The "Essay" was itself the product of years of thought by Laplace; four different versions saw publication even before the first edition appeared !.it presented the ideas of the "Theorie analytique." to a broad popular audience while serving as a synopsis of the full treatise in part mirroring it in organization. ROSTOW W. W. SIMON KUZNETS'S COPY
The Process of Economic Growth.
New York Norton & Company 1952. 8vo. In the original full black cloth with gilt lettering to spine in the original dust jacket. Previous owner's name on front free end-paper The economist Simon Kuznets Gilt lettering with a bit of wear and capitals on dust jacket with wear. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. First printing - and Simon Kuznets copy - of Rostow's famous work in which Rostow probably for the first time introduced an analytical tool and framework to analyze growth and progress in historical and contemporary economics. Rostow states in the preface that: "I should like to acknowledge valuable exchanges with . S. S. Kuznets" Preface p. IX.

Rostow's work is to a large extent a response to Marx's stages of feudalism capitalism socialism and communism. Rostow's categorized economic growth and development in four stages: 1.The traditional society; 2.The pre-condition for take off; 3.The drive to maturity; 4.The age of high mass consumption.
"Rostow's exposition has received very wide attention and approval perhaps for several reasons. First it is evolutionary; second it is grounded in historical studies; third it seems to show a predestined affluence for all; finally it presents a case for an inner logic and drive from one stage to the next that requires no conscious decision-making or deliberate efforts to promote growth; it is analytic without being programmatic." Ibid.

Walt Whitman Rostow 1916-2003 had a prominent role in the shaping of US foreign policy in Southeast Asia during the 1960s he was a staunch anti-communist and was noted for a belief in the efficacy of capitalism and free enterprise. Rostow served as a major adviser on national security affairs under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.

In 1960 Rostow published the book "The Stages of Economic Growth: A non-communist manifesto" in which he elaborated the ideas presented in the present book.

Simon Smith Kuznets 1901 - 1985 Russian American economist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for "his empirically founded interpretation of economic growth which has led to new and deepened insight into the economic and social structure and process of development".
Kuznets revolutionized econometrics with the important book "National Income and Its Composition 1919-1938. Published in 1941 which eventually formed the famous Kuznets Curve. This work relied to a large extent on Bowley's work on national income. hardcover

OHM GS. GEORG SIMON. OHM'S FIRST WORK G. S.
Grundlinien zu einer zweckmssigen Behandlung der Geometrie als hheren Bildungsmittels an verbereitenden Lehranstalten. Mit zwei Kupfertafeln.
Erlangen J.J. Palm und Ernst Enke 1817. 8vo. Nice cont. marbled cardboardbinding w. gilt title label and single gilt lines to spine. Corners and edges of boards bumped and some minor wear to capitals otherwise very nice and clean. Also internally in excellent condition w. almost no brownspotting. A few leaves w. marginal markings all in weak pencil. Printed on good paper. XXXII 224 2 -errata pp 2 folded plates. The very rare first edition of Ohm's first work which actually laid the foundation for his career and gave him the opportunity of working as a scientist. The work was printed eight years before his first scientific paper "Vorlufige Anzeige des Gesetzes nach welchem Metalle de Contakt-elektrizitt leiten" 1825 which contained for the first time the original research that was to immortalize his name.

The German physicist Georg Simon Ohm 1789 -1854 who later became famous for having established the fundamental relationship between voltage current and resistance and thereby founding electrical circuit analysis all based on what has ever since Ohm been known as "Ohm's Law" was solidly educated in mathematics physics chemistry and philosophy by his very skilled autodidact father. From 1800 to 1805 Ohm attended the Erlangen Gymnasium after which he attended the University of Erlangen for three years until his father withdrew him and placed him in exile in Switzerland because he was so dissatisfied with him wasting his scientific abilities; -Georg Ohm was primarily interested in dancing billiards and ice skating. He then became a mathematics teacher in Gottstadt bei Nydau and in 1809 he went to Neuchtel for two years as a private teacher although he would have preferred to follow Karl Christian von Langensdorf to Heidelberg to restart his mathematical studies. Langendorf however advised Ohm to study mathematics on his own and to read the works of Euler Laplace and Lacroix which he did. In 1811 Ohm returned to the University of Erlangen where he received his PhD. He now taught as a Privatdozent for three semesters but he could not advance and made almost no money so he was forced to seek employment from the Bavarian government. The best position that he was offered was that of a teacher of mathematics and physics at a poor quality low-prestige Realschule in Bamberg where he stayed with great dissatisfaction for three years until the school got closed down in March 1816. He was now assigned to teach a section of mathematics at another overcrowded and ill reputed school in Bamberg.
During these years Georg Ohm felt very unhappy with his position and realized that he had to do something to improve his merits in order to get out of Bamberg and have hopes to find a better post. And thus he undertook the writing of his first work the elementary geometry text which was to prove his true abilities. Ohm sent the manuscript to King Wilhelm III of Prussia and in 1817 he was offered the position of Oberlehrer of mathematics and physics at the recently reformed Jesuit Gymnasium at Cologne. This was a very good school which was based on the ideals of proper scientific education and enthusiasm for learning and teaching and it was this position that stimulated Ohm to seriously concern himself with physics which he had never done before. The physics lab was very well equipped and Ohm could now devote himself to experimenting on physics.

"Ohm's fist work was an elementary geometry text "Grundlinien." which embodied his ideals on the role of mathematics in education. The student he believed should learn mathematics as if it were the free product of his own mind not as a finished product imposed from without. Ideally by fostering the conviction that the highest life is that devoted to pure knowledge education should create a self-respect capable of withstanding all vicissitudes in one's external circumstances. One detects in these sentiments the reflection not only of his own early education but also of the years of isolation in Switzerland and of personal and intellectual deprivation of Bamberg. The resulting inwardness of Ohm's character and the highly intellectualized nature of his ideals of personal worth were an essential aspect of the man who would bring the abstractness of mathematics into the hiterto physical and chemical domain of galvanic electricity." Paris Imprimerie Royale 1776. 4to. Extract from "Mmoires de Mathematique et de Physique Prsents l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans" Anne 1773. Pp. 37-232. a. 1 folded engraved plate. Clean and fine. First printing of Laplace's famous double-memoir in which he made a coupling of probability theory with astronomy.
The first memoir here is his third memoir on probability a follow-up of his groundbreaking paper "Mmoire sur la Probabilit des Causes par les vnemens" from the same year; the main portion of the paper deals with the theory of chances. He solves different problems that of odd and even a solid has p equal faces which are numbered 22.p: required the probability that in the course of n throws the faces will occur in the order of 12.p. a complicate problem arising with more players the Problem of Points in the case of two players and with 3 players on Duration and Play."The present memoir may be regarded as a collection of examples in the history of Finite Differences"Todhunter.

The second memoir constitutes Laplace's "FIRST COMPREHENSIVE PIECE ON THE MECHANICS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM" and his theory of the gravitational force. His modifications of Newton's laws set forth here became the foundation for his developed celestial mechanics.

"A close reading of the astronomical part of the dual memoir Laplaces first comprehensive piece on the mechanics of the solar system serves to temper the conventional image of a vindicator of Newtons law of gravity against the evidence for decay of motion in the planets. Nothing is said about apparent anomalies gathering toward a cosmic catastrophe;on the contrary the state of the universe is assumed to be steady. The problem is not whether the phenomena can be deduced from the law of universal gravity but how to do it. Since that appeared to be impossible on a strict Newtonian construction of the evidence Laplace proposed modifying the law of gravity slightly. He proceeded to try out the notion that gravity is a force propagated in time instead of instantaneously. Its quantity at a given point would then depend on the velocity of bodies as well as on their mass and distance. Even more interesting the reasoning in this argument was not that of normal mathematical astronomy but was of the type that he brought to physics in other much later writings. Lastly in a problem that he did handle in the tradition of theoretical astronomy namely in the secular variations in the mean motions of Jupiter and Saturn the conclusion is that the mutual attraction of the plants cannot account for them contrary to what we expect from Mcanique cleste."DSB. unknown
