164 4 15 1 blank pp.First and only edition of "the most important monograph devoted to the hyacinth" Krelage by the Frenchman Maximilien Henri Marquis de Saint-Simon 1720-1799 who although an amateur had a surprisingly scientific approach. Here printed on heavy and large paper and with the plates printed on folding leaves enabling the reader to view the plates while consulting the text at the same time. The existence of large paper copies seems to go unnoticed in the literature. The work includes a comprehensive list with "over two thousand named varieties double and single including those grown by George Voorhelm . It appears to be the most important list for the century'' Hunt. With the engraved armorial bookplate of the French historian Édouard de Laplane 1774-1870. The following chapters are devoted to the classification of sea shells univalves bivalves and multivalves each dealing with a different family of these classes. Each plate depicts several shells included at the end of the text is a list with the names of all the depicted shells. The author apparently felt that female readers would be especially interested in the “customs” and “love life” of shellfish.A few small spots and a small water stain in the upper margin of the first few pages. Binding rubbed. Overall in very good condition.l Junk Thes. libr. conchyliorum 80; Nissen ZBI 995. unknown

It incorporates a dictionary of more than 4000 technical terms many borrowed or adapted from Latin giving simple definitions in common Dutch. Unlike the second edition the present third edition explicitly notes that it has been newly revised improved and expanded. It teaches all theoretical and practical knowledge needed in a notary's office presented in the form of questions and answers like a catechism but sometimes also citing sources. Van Leeuwen's approach is refreshingly anti-bureaucratic.From the library of Eeltjo van Beresteyn 1876-1948. With a 1770 owner's inscription some underlining and an occasional pencilled note. With a small chip in the frontispiece a few pages with minor smudges or marginal defects but still in good condition. Binding somewhat soiled and back board wrinkled no endleaves. XXXVI 37-50 654 pp.First edition of the Dutch translation of a detailed work on corals and sponges by the German zoologist and botanist Peter Simon Pallas 1741-1811. In this work originally entitled Elenchus zoophytorum sistensbgenerum adumbrationes generaliores first published as a part of Pallas's Miscellanea zoologica Pallas presents an innovative classification of corals and sponges just after they had been transferred from the plant to the animal kingdom. The Dutch naturalist translator Pieter Boddaert 1694-1760 added some of his own observations and made the drawings for the copperplates. In 1766 Pallas published his Miscellanea Zoologica which included the descriptions of several new vertebrates which he had discovered in Dutch museum collections. His new system of animal classification was praised by Georges Cuvier and others. Some black spots on the first 15 leaves not affecting the text a small marginal water stain near the end and a large stain on pp. 289-304 and 548-560 from a previously inserted document edges of the plates slightly frayed. 31 5 blank pp.First edition of a description of the mushrooms of France the most important work of the French mycologist François-Simon Cordier together with the complete set of 61 drawings about 300 figures of about 110 species of mushrooms prepared as models for the book's 60 chromolithographic plates. The drawings are unsigned but the book notes that they were drawn from life by "A.D. Cordier" title-page or "Mlle Delville-Cordier" pp. ix-x. This was the author's adopted daughter Aimée-Eugénie Delville-Cordier 1822 or 1826-1899 best known as a portrait painter.François-Simon Cordier 1797-1874 a Paris physician mycologist and founding member and president of the Société Botanique de France published several books on mushrooms beginning in 1826. Les champignons de France is his most important work. We find no record of his ever having married but in 1852 he adopted Aimée-Eugénie. The adoption record indicates that she was born in Paris in 1822 the Louvre gives her year of birth as 1826 daughter of Marie Madeleine Delaville and an unknown father which would make her 30 when Cordier adopted her. From her adoption she used the family name Delville!-Cordier. One must wonder if she was either Cordier's biological daughter or his mistress's daughter from an earlier relation but we have found no further information. She showed two portraits at the 1855 Exposition des Beaux-Arts and had a successful career as a portrait painter. The first 40 leaves of the book are waterstained and the plates are slightly browned but the drawings are in very good condition.
