‎Édition originale de cet important ouvrage qui recense en détail tous les signaux de nuit et de jour utilisés dans la marine de guerre. Cet ouvrage fit lobjet dune deuxième édition à Amsterdam en 1764 (en français). Avant de le publier, Bigot de Morogues a utilisé son manuscrit pendant quelques années pour instruire les gardes de la marine de Brest. Sébastien-François Bigot de Morogues (1705-1781), fils d'un commissaire de la marine, entre en 1723 dans le régiment royal dartillerie. Il passe ensuite dans la marine en 1736, sert sur le "Bourbon" (qui périt en 1746 sur les côtes de la Martinique), et devient capitaine de vaisseau en 1756. En 1759, il commande le "Magnifique", formant l'arrière-garde de l'escadre du maréchal de Confians destinée à un débarquement en Écosse, et soutient seul, le 20 novembre, jour de la bataille de Quiberon, le choc de trois vaisseaux anglais. Les solides connaissances dont il fait preuve, tant dans l'artillerie que dans la marine, le font pressentir à plusieurs reprises pour le ministère de la marine ; mais cette nomination n'aboutit jamais. Nommé inspecteur d'artillerie de marine en 1771, il finit ensuite sa vie sur ses terres. Ses capacités lui permirent de composer des ouvrages pratiques de conception et d'exposition claires, qui firent longtemps autorité ; de même, il est à l'origine de l'Académie de Marine constituée définitivement en 1752, et dont il fut le premier directeur. Louvrage se divise en deux parties : la première traite des évolutions navales et la seconde des signaux et ordres généraux (de jour, de nuit, par temps de brume) qu'une armée navale doit connaître et exécuter. Empreint du formalisme de la tactique navale européenne, louvrage est caractéristique des techniques de combat de lépoque. Résultat dune volonté de prudence, on a voulu éviter les manuvres de débordement aléatoires. Les tentatives de concentration contre la flotte adverse deviennent de plus en plus rares et lon impose la rigidité de la ligne de file et la discipline du feu. Les batailles se résument en dinterminables évolutions pour profiter du vent, suivies dune canonnade stérile entre deux lignes parallèles. Ce formalisme règne surtout en France depuis le traité de 1696 du père Hoste, mais aussi en Espagne et, dans une moindre mesure en Angleterre. Il conduit à une déviation stratégique, la « non-bataille » qui contribue à développer la passivité des officiers. Before publishing it, Bigot de Morogues used his manuscript for a few years to instruct the naval guards of Brest. Sébastien-François Bigot de Morogues (1705-1781), son of a naval commissioner, entered the Royal Artillery Regiment in 1723. He then went to the navy in 1736, served on the "Bourbon", and became captain in 1756. In 1759, he commands the "Magnifique", forming the rear guard of the squadron of the marshal of Confians destined for a landing in Scotland, and supports alone, November 20, day of the battle of Quiberon, the shock of three English ships. His solid knowledge of both the artillery and the navy has made him think several times about the ministry of the navy; but this nomination never succeeds. Appointed Inspector of Marine Artillery in 1771, he ended his life on his land. His abilities enabled him to compose practical works of clear design and exposition, which for a long time were authoritative; he is also at the origin of the Academy of Marine formed definitively in 1752, and of which he was the first director. The work is divided in two parts: the first deals with naval evolutions and the second general signals and orders (by day, by night, by fog) that a naval army must know and execute. Impressed by the formalism of European naval tactics, the work is characteristic of the technical fights of the time. As a result of a desire for prudence, we wanted to avoid random overflow maneuvers. Attempts to concentrate on the opposing fleet are becoming increasingly rare, and rigidity of the line and discipline of fire is imposed. The battles can be summed up in endless evolutions to take advantage of the wind, followed by a barren cannonade between two parallel lines. This formalism reigns especially in France since the treaty of 1696 of Father Hoste, but also in Spain and, to a lesser extent, in England. It leads to a strategic deviation, the "non-battle" which contributes to developing the passivity of the officers. One of the rare copies printed on large paper, very fresh.‎
