‎Black Troops, WWII Navy‎

‎African American Navy Sailors Photo Archive during WWII Era‎

‎African American US Navy sailors WWII. era vintage photograph archive. This archive of eleven silver gelatin photographs measuring between 4" x 3.25" and 8" x 10". All photos are showing black sailors in Navy uniforms during WWII Five of these photos appear to have been taken from the same album as indicated by the tan album page paper that they are still attached to on verso. Three are studio shots and two show the young sailors standing at attention with a training rifle in their hand. There are four original photographs of a sailor named George Bailey Brooks based at the Great Lakes Naval Base during WWII. The Great Lakes Naval Training Station was just north of Chicago and was a locus for African Americans who enlisted in the Navy. The "Golden Thirteen" first cadre of black Navy officers were trained at Great Lakes as were thousands of others like Brooks. Three of the photos of Brooks are portraits and one depicts him standing upright and armed with a rifle all in uniform. These large portrait photos were most likely taken during his time as a recruit given his uniform and lack of badge. One photo of Brooks is dated "Aug 4 1945" a few months after the war while the rest are undated. Additionally in the smallest photo we can see a congregation of white and black sailors aboard a ship watching a band play consisting of three black musicians who play the double bass piano and guitar. In the Navy during WWII ships were integrated mostly in situations where the black sailors were ship stewards mess attendants cooks and the like. Originally combat and leadership roles were almost exclusively reserved for white sailors but certain units like the Seabees began to train black sailors in roles other than ship labor. By the war's end black sailors in the Seabees and other units formed a significant part of the logistical and construction apparatus of the Pacific Theater. President Truman issued Executive Order 9981 to abolish discrimination based on race or colorin the armed forces. For the Navy however it took many more years to see the promise of this order fulfilled. In very good condition overall. unknown‎

‎Black Troops, Navy‎

‎Black Navy Sailors WWII Archive of 19 Photographs‎

‎An exceptional archive of 19 silver gelatin original photographs capturing the experiences of Black U.S. Navy sailors during and immediately after World War II. Archive consists of 16 black and white photographs measuring between 4" x 3" and 7" x 5". These images document the realities of African American service members in a still-segregated military featuring moments of camaraderie training leisure and transport.<br /> <br /> A particularly notable postcard photograph dated March 21 1943 provides a rare personal connection to an individual sailor. The collection includes images of crowded transport ships onshore gatherings of uniformed Black sailors and portraits of individuals offering insight into the evolving role of African Americans in the U.S. Navy during this critical period. Several photographs depict Black sailors dressed in U.S. Navy service uniforms identifiable by their white “Dixie cup†hats neckerchiefs and long-sleeved jumper tops. Some images feature groups of men gathered outside a "Ship’s Service" facility a common recreational and supply hub on naval bases. These relaxed poses suggest a moment of rest possibly at a port or naval station in the Pacific. A particularly striking image shows four Black sailors standing together in a tight group arms around one another. Other images show sailors disembarking from a crowded military transport ship possibly returning from deployment or being transferred between stations. An image captures the transport ship returning to port with the Bay Bridge visible in the background indicating arrival in the San Francisco Bay. The ship appears densely packed with uniformed servicemen many crowding the railings and lifeboat stations eager to disembark. Such scenes were common during Operation Magic Carpet 1945–1946 the massive effort to bring American troops home after World War II. San Francisco served as a primary return point for thousands of service members coming back from the Pacific theater making it likely that these men had been stationed in or near Japan the Philippines or other Pacific islands.<br /> During World War II the U.S. Navy remained largely segregated with Black sailors initially relegated to roles as mess attendants stewards and laborers. However increasing pressure from civil rights groups and the military’s need for manpower led to gradual shifts. By 1942 the Navy began accepting Black sailors into general service rates though full integration would not occur until after the war. The images in this archive likely capture both pre- and post-integration realities as some photos show only Black sailors together while others suggest a mixed environment indicative of the Navy’s slow but steady transition toward racial equality. President Harry Truman’s Executive Order 9981 1948 ultimately mandated desegregation but African Americans in the Navy continued to face systemic discrimination well into the 1950s. A rare and historically significant photographic record of African American service members in the U.S. Navy during a pivotal era of military and social change. unknown‎

‎Navy Department Report Revealing the Identity of Black Pearl Harbor Hero Dorie Miller April 1942‎

‎A striking documentation of shifting race policy in the U.S. military during World War II this bulletin outlines war developments while foregrounding debates around Black participation in the armed services. On April 7 1942 the Navy Department formally announced it would begin accepting "Negro volunteers for general service" across the Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Black enlistment in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II archive. Two documents from the Navy Department Washington D.C.: April 3–7 1942. 1 Nine-page Navy News Bulletin issued by the Office of Public Relations Analysis Section. Mimeographed typescript measuring 14" x 8.5" including contemporary handwritten inscriptions in ink and red marker. 2 Navy Department Press Briefing "Navy to Accept Negroes for General Service". Mimeograph typescript measuring 10.5" x 8". The announcement promised parity in standards: "the same physical and mental entrance standards required of all Navy personnel is to be required of Negroes" and specified that enlistees would serve in District craft Navy Yards and construction units "employed in developing bases outside the United States' continental limits." The statement ends with a forward-looking note: "Recruiting of Negroes for service in the Messman Branch is to continue without change or interruption." This policy shift however is set against a broader context of internal Navy skepticism and systemic racism. A deeply significant entry on page 4 praises the heroism of Dorie Miller a Black sailor who took over a machine gun during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Navy Secretary Frank Knox is said to have "commended the 22-year-old Texan for bravery with this citation: 'For his distinguished devotion to duty extraordinary courage and disregard of his own personal safety during the attack. in the face of serious fire Miller. protected a machine gun until ordered to leave that bridge.'" Despite this the bulletin recognizes that Miller’s identity had been concealed for months: "It was more than three months after the Pearl Harbor incident before the name of the man became known." The delay the bulletin notes reflects the Navy’s hesitation to openly celebrate Black heroism: "Had the man been accused of raping or assaulting a white person. his identity would have been known immediately but this little ray of heroic action. had to be filtered through a white sailor."<br /> <br /> The document continues by citing press reactions to racial inequality in the Navy particularly those urging President Roosevelt to act. The Chicago Sunday Bee writes: "President Roosevelt ought to issue an executive order banning all forms of racial discrimination in the Navy. If such is done Miller will not have died in vain." Similarly Ollie Steward of the Washington Afro-American laments: "How young colored American citizens from serving their country on the high seas" and praises Wendell Willkie for stating bluntly: "It could be done immediately. No law would have to be passed. Just one thing is necessary. An order by the President or the Secretary of the Navy would dispose of the Navy's color bar -- just like that!" This bulletin also provides a rare and detailed snapshot of wartime operations and propaganda dissemination. Among numerous updates it discusses British bombing raids Japanese airstrikes in China and naval battles in the Mediterranean. One entry describes the U.S. naval loss at Pearl Harbor and details Allied efforts to reclaim dominance in sea lanes. Others critique delays in reporting and government censorship. The section titled "Censorship and Information" discloses bureaucratic confusion: "Information at times has been suppressed by one department only to be released by another" and reflects widespread public frustration: "There is a growing feeling in Washington that the people do not know enough about the progress of this war." Light creasing and handling wear small corner dogears. Overall very good condition. unknown‎

‎Hitler's U-Boat War. [First UK Edition. Complete set.]. NEAR FINE SET IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPERS‎

‎2 vols., 8vo., First Edition thus, with 126 plates on 48, and 2 double-page plans, 27 tables and 14 maps (8 double-page) in the text; black cloth, red endpapers, a near fine set in unclipped dustwrapper. Splendid set of the most comprehensive study to date, comprising 'The Hunters 1939-1942' (1997) and 'The Hunted 1942-1945' (1999). The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest, hardest-fought and most critical sea conflict in history: 'they [the U-boats] were the only thing that really frightened me' said Churchill. A study on this scale has been feasible only in the twenty years or so following the release of large official archives (the last of which principally concerned codes and code-breaking) in London and Washington. First published by Random House in New York 1996-98; the UK edition was published in far smaller numbers and in already difficult to find in this state.‎
