From Chihuahua to Patagonia producers sent industrial fibers tropical fruits and staple goods across oceans to satisfy the ever-increasing demand from foreign markets. In southern Mexico's Soconusco district the coffee trade would transform rural life. A regional history of the Soconusco as well as a study in commodity capitalism From the Grounds Up places indigenous and mestizo villagers migrant workers and local politicians at the center of our understanding of the export boom. An isolated impoverished backwater for most of the nineteenth century by 1920 the Soconusco had transformed into a small but vibrant node in the web of global commerce. Alongside plantation owners and foreign investors a dense but little-explored web of small-time producers shopowners and laborers played key roles in the rapid expansion of export production. Their deep engagement with rural development challenges the standard top-down narrative of market integration led by economic elites allied with a strong state. Here Casey Marina Lurtz argues that the export boom owed its success to a diverse body of players whose choices had profound impacts on Latin America's export-driven economy during the first era of globalization. hardcover‎

‎Édition originale de ce traité sur la mer et les marées dû à Otto Casmann (1562-1607), auteur éclectique et figure importante de l'histoire de l'anthropologie et de la psychologie. Casmann étudie la philosophie à Marbourg auprès du professeur Rudolf Goclenius ainsi que la théologie à Helmstedt où il obtient une maîtrise de philosophie. Là bas, il enseigne la logique à loccasion de conférences dans lesquelles il prend position contre le système aristotélicien. Dans un premier temps catholique, ce nest quen quà partir de 1587, à loccasion de ses études à l'université de Heidelberg quil se convertit progressivement au protestantisme. A partir de 1594, il enseigne la philosophie et la théologie à Stade. Son approche est centrée sur la logique et la philosophie naturelle. En, 1594, il publie sa première version de « Psychologia anthropologica » dans laquelle il précise le terme « anthropologie », hérité de Magnus Hundt. Casmann définit alors l'anthropologie comme « la doctrine de la nature humaine », laquelle est une particularité d'être qui participe au double monde-nature, le spirituel et le physique, qui sont unis à la base de la raison. En 1596, il publie sa seconde version de Psychologia anthropologica qui se concentre sur la structure du corps humain. Cependant, Casmann écrit sur des sujets très variés, quil aborde toujours avec une approche basée sur une philosophie dite « biblique ». Cest le cas du présent ouvrage où lauteur sessaie à locéanographie, toujours teinté de théologie. En effet, dans ce livre, Casmann aborde de nombreux thèmes liés à locéanographie dont notamment : la question de leau de mer et des causes de sa salinité, lapproche aristotélicienne de leau en tant quélément, leau glacée et sa formation dans les zones froides, les conséquences de la sphéricité de la Terre sur les masses deau, le mouvement des vagues, les courants et le cycle des marées (le flux et le reflux) ou encore lexplication des différences de marnage observées entre les mers. Ainsi, dans ce traité, Casmann délivre son approche teintée de théologie et son opinion critique sur le travail des nombreux auteurs qui se sont intéressé à ce sujet avant lui. Ouvrage dune grande rareté dont nous navons trouvé que quelques exemplaires passés en vente et quelques-uns conservés en fond public. Painted contemporary full vellum binding with headband, raised bands on the joints, blue edges. (Some worm tracks). First edition of this treatise on the sea and the tides by Otto Casmann (1562-1607), an eclectic author and important figure in the history of anthropology and psychology. Casmann studied philosophy in Marburg with Professor Rudolf Goclenius and theology in Helmstedt, where he obtained a master's degree in philosophy. There he taught logic in lectures in which he took a stand against the Aristotelian system. Initially a Catholic, it was not until 1587, during his studies at the University of Heidelberg, that he gradually converted to Protestantism. From 1594, he taught philosophy and theology in Stade. His approach is centered on logic and natural philosophy. In 1594, he published his first version of "Psychologia anthropologica" in which he defined the term "anthropology", inherited from Magnus Hundt. Casmann defines anthropology as "the doctrine of human nature", which is a particularity of being that participates in the double world-nature, the spiritual and the physical, which are united at the basis of reason. In 1596, he published his second version of Psychologia anthropologica, which focused on the structure of the human body. However, Casmann wrote on a wide variety of subjects, which he always approached with a so-called "biblical" philosophy. This is the case of the present book where the author tries his hand at oceanography, always tinged with theology. Indeed, in this book, Casmann deals with many themes related to oceanography, including: the question of sea water and the causes of its salinity, the Aristotelian approach to water as an element, ice water and its formation in cold areas, the consequences of the sphericity of the Earth on the masses of water, the movement of waves, currents and the tidal cycle (the ebb and flow) or the explanation of the differences in tidal range observed between seas. Thus, in this treatise, Casmann delivers his theologically tinged approach and his critical opinion on the work of the many authors who wrote on this subject before him. Provenance: Rudolph Graf von Abensperg (engraved ex-libris and crowned monogram); Anton Hiltenbrand (1721-1786), theologian, university professor and specialist in natural sciences, agriculture and theology in Lemberg (manuscript ex-libris). A work of great rarity of which we have found only a few copies passed on sale and a few conserved in public funds. Fresh, preserved in its beautiful original painted vellum binding.‎

Le mérite de l'auteur est de montrer l'originalité des vues du « grand maître et surintendant général de la navigation et commerce de France » non seulement dans le domaine administratif (où il apparaît bien comme le précurseur de Colbert), mais aussi en ce qui concerne l'expansion coloniale (illustrée par de très bonnes cartes) et la conduite de la guerre (les victoires navales de Cadix en 1640 et de Barcelone en 1642 sont, autant que les victoires terrestres, des signes du déclin de la puissance espagnole). Servi par un style alerte, l'auteur n'ignore rien de la production historique récente et a fait notamment un usage judicieux des Papiers de Richelieu édités par Pierre Grillon et Adolf Wild."
