1915. Cuba U.S. Military 1915 Havana Cuba vernacular photo collection from U.S. Officer George Washington Polk Jr. Archive of 28 silver gelatin photographs pasted to album pages some loose many annotated showing rural life military scenes harbor views and native architecture in and around Havana Cuba. Ranging in size from 2" x 2.5" to 4.5" x 3.5". A remarkable World War I era photographic archive compiled by George Washington Polk Jr. 1889–1976 later a Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps and instructor in the early U.S. Air Force. Taken during his military visit to Cuba in December 1915 these photographs offer an early 20th-century American military traveler’s view of Havana and the surrounding countryside combining naval surveillance of the harbor with intimate documentation of rural Cuban life local laborers and vernacular architecture. Several photographs bearing detailed handwritten annotations in ink dated December 22–29 1915.<br /> <br /> Photographs include ships anchored in Havana Harbor close-ups of Cuban civilians one captioned “Cuban Farmer & Son Near Havana Dec 22 1915†coastal fortifications such as Morro Castle boats labeled “U.S.C. 5th Protectors off Havana†and colonial-era civic plazas. Multiple views feature thatched rural huts or bohÃos sugarcane fields and “Orange Trees & Coconut Palms Near Havana" showcasing a rare agricultural and cultural record of Cuba’s pre-Revolution economy. Several prints depict harbor views from on board ship likely taken by Polk from the deck of the S.S. Abangarez a United Fruit Company steamer known to carry U.S. military and diplomatic passengers. One caption reads: “These only ones we heard ship bells on delivered in Santa Clara Pastor Bobbie Adams Dec 25 1915 on board U.F.C. Str. ‘Abangarez’ Havana-Colon.†Verso of nearly all photographs are stamped with the mark of Potchernick-Birdsong Co. Kodak Place San Antonio Texas suggesting they were developed stateside from film brought back by Polk or mailed home. The album’s military provenance is significant as Polk would go on to serve in both world wars and instruct U.S. Army Air Corps pilots in Ohio and Alaska. These early images capture his first overseas engagement with Latin American terrain and populations at a time when Cuba was a U.S.-controlled protectorate under the Platt Amendment 1901–1934 and American commercial and military presence dominated Cuban ports.<br /> <br /> Most photos lightly pasted along one edge to scrapbook leaves some detached or partially affixed. A few corner creases otherwise images are sharp with strong contrast. Overall good to very condition. A historically rich visual document linking U.S. military observation rural Cuban life and the early career of a decorated Air Force officer just as the U.S. was preparing to enter World War I. unknown
