‎Sea Cat Sailor's Newspaper from Aboard Naval Ship 1945‎

‎Sea Cat News. December 1945. Volume III No 7. Newspaper believed to be composed by sailors aboard the USS Sea Cat a Baleo-class submarine that earned 3 stars for operations during World War II. Measures 8 x 13 inches. 6 typewritten pages stapled. Drawing of cat wearing Navy ship with the words "Land ahead!" beneath. Typed stories relating to news from Washington football scores between the Army and Navy commentary on the war trials beginning in Nuremberg and stories from visits to shore. "Yesterday we listened to the Army-Navy game. Let us remember that one of the chief ingredients going into the building of either national or individual greatness is the ability to take either Victory or defeat in the proper spirit. The Nation that plays well also fights well" reads one editorial. Includes several comics one called the "Dreamboat Barnacle" in which a sailor tells his doctor that dreams of a beautiful woman are making him ill. The tone of the paper is light and humorous marked by a kind of cavalier cheer befitting men kept in tight quarters under stress recently relieved by war's end and the promise of homecoming. Creased down the middle where folded. Wrinkled at edges does not affect text. A charming look at life aboard a Navy ship at the end of World War II. Overall very good condition. unknown‎

‎Silhouette Reverse Portrait on Glass of British captain Henry Whitby‎

‎Very Good. Portrait of British captain Henry Whitby whose ship fired a shot which infamously killed an American seaman in 1806. Silhouette reverse portrait on glass 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches to sight captioned "Cpt. Henry Whitby R.N." in image; not examined outside of frame. Np early 19th century.

In the years leading up to the War of 1812 the British Navy made a practice of checking American merchant ships to ascertain whether embargoed French cargo was aboard. In April 1806 off New York the American merchant ship Richard refused to stop when commanded by Captain Henry Whitby's HMS Leander. A warning shot was fired in what proved to be American territorial waters. The shot was poorly aimed and splintered a railing; a shard killed an American sailor named John Pierce. This triggered an international incident with President Jefferson calling for Whitby's arrest. Whitby was cleared in a British court-martial which only increased tensions. We don't know when this portrait of Whitby was created but he was promoted to captain in 1801 and died in 1812. unknown books‎

‎Navy Photos‎

‎Archive of 53 Original Photographs c. 1921-1923 from Servicemen at Scapa Floe and the Honda Point Disaster--Biggest Peacetime Disaster in Navy History‎

‎53 original silver gelatin print photographs. c. 1921-1923. Mostly 3"x5" with a few 2"x"3 inches. Loose. Original vernacular photographs most likely taken by one or more servicemen in the U.S. Navy. While many of the photographs show battleships on exercises and fellow sailors on deck including some African American servicemen at least 9 bear firsthand witness to the infamous Honda Point disaster of the coast of Santa Barbara in 1923. More photographs from the group may be the ships involved before disaster struck. At least 4 additional photographs show the famous scuttling of German destroyers at Scapa Floe which occurred after peace was declared in 1921.

The Honda Point disaster was the largest peacetime loss of U.S. Navy ships. On the evening of September 8 1923 seven Clemson class destroyers while traveling at 20 knots 37 km/h ran aground at Honda Point a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel off Point Arguello on the coast in Santa Barbara County California. Two other ships grounded but were able to maneuver free off the rocks. Twenty-three sailors died in the disaster. Much study has been directed at determining the causes of such a terrible accident. Most likely the cause was a combination of heavy seas possibly caused by an earthquake in Japan darkness fog and the mistrust of the leadership on board the leading destroyer Delphy for the new radio navigation system preferring instead to use outdated estimation-based navigational methods. Although the Delphy immediately sounded her alarm after running aground the remainder of the squadrom was tragically traveling too close and one ship after another became entangled in the rocks. The photographs show from many views the various ships involved in the accident either listing heavily on rocks or sinking. Some of them can be identified as the U.S.S. S.P. Lee the Pervical the Nicholas the Woodbury the Chauncy and the leading ship Delphy. Most of the photos are taken very close by clearly from on board another ship perilously close to the disaster and most likely one of the fatal squadron. The final two appear to have been taken shortly after the sailor was rescued and show the wrecked vessels from the beach and from a rocky cliff overlooking the channel.

Four photos in the group record the incident at Scapa Floe on June 21 1919 where a German fleet of battleships was ordered by the Allies to report following the November Armistice ending World War I. They remained anchored for over 7 months and when word of the Peace Treaty of Versailles came in Admiral Reuter was ordered to surrender the vessels. However before they could be forced to comply the crew scuttled the vessels. We see in these photos the German Destroyers sinking including the S.M.S. Bayern and the S.M.S. Hindenburg with only smokestacks and tripod showing above the waterline. Another photo is labeled in the negative "German sailors leaving their doomed vessels for the last time. The remaining photographs in the group show submarines docked near San Francisco the Battleships Texas California and Florida sailors including a few African American aboard the U.S.S. Goff sailors carrying out routine exercises such as loading the deck gun launching torpedos maneuvering at speed and at least 6 photos of destroyers making heavy smoke which could be the Honda Point ships preceding the disaster. All photos are in very good condition with no previous sign of gluing or taping. Some are numbered and others have notes in white negative verso. A few are faded to sepia but most are still very dark and detailed. An important and historically relevant collection. unknown books‎
