Toning to leaf ends uniform toning to leaves free of foxing or noteworthy soiling. Previous ownership label on front endpaper of each volume. Housed in custom cloth chemise title in gilt on spine. Sabin 14618 Volume I printed by James Whiting and Volume II by C.H. Reynell. A scarce text with only 6 known copies appearing in OCLC. The War of Extermination known as Guerra a Muerte was a decree by Simon Bolivar authorizing acts of sabotage and murder against Spanish citizens in South America. This work includes conversations with El Libertador Simon Bolivar shortly before his death in 1830. Also includes descriptions of travel in Venezuela Colombia and parts of the Caribbean. ‎Annapolis MD: The United States Naval Institute 1939. Hardcover. VG-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover this book came from the ships library of the USS Bear with this info stamped on both the front and rear pastedowns. Maroon cloth boards show spotting and toning along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The rear board and spine has a couple whitish spots present. The internal binding is good no hinge issues. The book is filled with numerous large foldout charts and illustrations some of which are in color. They all appear to be in good shape though some of them have small corner folds. Besides the larger ordinances used on the ship there is also a chapter on small arms and machine guns which includes the Colt model 1911. This includes illustrated part breakdowns. No handwriting was found other than the book number on the pastedowns. Pages show toning with some foxing and minor spotting. The USS Bear originally known as SS Bear was launched in Newfoundland in 1874 and then sold to the US government in 1884. It served as the USS Bear from 1939 to 1944. Bear's career lasted for 89 years. She spent a total of 47 years in commissioned service of the United States Revenue Cutter Service Coast Guard and Navy. She was one of only a few ships to have served in both polar regions. She is also one of the very few ships to be on active service in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Spanish-American War World War I and World War II. ref. ‎La destruction du Scharnhorst le 26 décembre 1943. — Par crainte de voir les Alliés débarquer en Norvège, Hitler concentra au nord de ce pays ses navires de surface. Mais, bientôt il ne resta plus que le cuirassé Tirpitz et le croiseur de bataille Scharnhorst. Des sous-marins nains britanniques mirent le premier hors de combat ; cependant, la seule présence du second constituait une grave menace pour les importants convois que l’Angleterre faisait passer en Russie. Pour y parer, des forces relativement puissantes durent être maintenues dans le nord par les Britanniques. Le 25 décembre 1943, le Scharnhorst prit la mer pour attaquer un de ces convois qu’il croyait faiblement défendu. Une série de coïncidences favorables aux Britanniques et des fautes commises par l’amiral allemand permirent au cuirassé-amiral de la Home Fleet, le Duke of York, de le rejoindre et de l’écraser sous son feu. Le croiseur de bataille allemand était si résistant qu’il fallut onze torpilles et un nombre considérable d’obus pour le couler. Sa disparition transforma radicalement la situation stratégique dans les eaux nordiques. Ce récit, loin d’être purement technique, est extrêmement vivant, l’auteur ayant pris contact avec la plupart des acteurs du drame. Il est, de plus, fort intéressant, car il se rapporte à ce qui restera probablement le dernier des engagements classiques entre navires de surface.
