Alla seconda di copertina, nell'angolo superiore sinistro, etichetta con collocazione di biblioteca privata. Al frontespizio, piccolo timbro rettangolare di possesso, di 1,8 cm di larghezza per 1 cm di altezza, con le tre iniziali, puntate, del nome e del cognome del vecchio proprietario. Nel margine esterno degli ultimi due fogli, un piccolo strappo, di 0,4 cm, senza perdite, che non riguarda il testo, ben sistemato con carta giapponese. Ottoman Navy signals code book.= Osmanli Bahriyesi görünür muhabere kod kitabi. This work taking part among the Art Works Series of Turkish Naval Forces Cultural Publications, aims at introducing the Signaling Manual formerly used at the Ottoman Navy. The original copy in manuscript is in the Istanbul Naval Museum. Used by Turkish seamen for more than a century since the first quarter of the 19th century, this work has an exceptional value from the viewpoint of Turkish traditional handicrafts such as miniature, calligraphy, binding etc. When the circumstances of the epoch are taken into account, the high technique used in the preparation of the manual inevitably gives it an important position among similar works prepared for the war navies of other countries. This Code Book is one of the works created during the early times of scientific and cultural activities which took place within the Europeanization process of the Ottoman Empire. The fact that westernization practices in the Empire were first seen at the Navy is an indication of the importance attached by Turks to the seamanship.

Hardcover. ; Early binding in marbled boards with tan leather corners and a spine later rebacked with brown leather. Text tight clean & intact with light age toning. First printed in 1802 these regulations were a key document in formalizing naval policy in the early American republic covering topics like command authority officer conduct and ship operations. Their reprinting in 1809 ensured that the fleet had current guidance amidst mounting tensions with Great Britain that would ultimately lead to the War of 1812. Inscription on free front endpaper "Ch: Folsom. From Rev. Cheever Felsh. U. S. Ship Washington 1816 ". In 1816 Charles Folsom 1794-1872 was appointed chaplain and instructor of mathmatics aboard the U. S. Ship Washington. He later went on to serve as Harvard Librarian and was a noted editor.
