With personal bookplate on front paste-downs. A previous owner has annotated neatly the backstrips of the wrappers to indicate the years covered by each volume. The official British account published in the UK Government's series History of the Second World War. The set comprises: Volume I: The Defensive, 1954 (fifth impression 1961); Volume II: The Period of Balance, 1957 (third impression 1962); Volume III/1: The Offensive Part 1: 1 June 1943-31 May 1944, 1960 (first impression); Volume III/2: The Offensive Part II: 1 June 1944-14 August 1945, 1961 (first impression). The last two volumes contain their respective errata slips (errors in the first two volumes are corrected in the text of the later printings). br. «Era il 22 gennaio 1943: quello stesso giorno compivo 28 anni. E di una cosa, più di ogni altra ero fiero: di essere il più giovane comandante dei sommergibili italiani che operavano in Atlantico.» La prima missione del giovane comandante del sommergibile atlantico Finzi in quella che avrebbe dovuto essere una silenziosa azione di appoggio e rifornimento a favore di un altro sommergibile, il Da Vinci, per consentirgli di allungare il suo raggio d'azione e andare a colpire laddove il nemico non si sarebbe mai aspettato. L'ordine tassativo era quello di non attaccare e di non farsi intercettare per non sprecare siluri e armamenti. Ma le cose non andarono come pianificato, il Finzi rifornì il Da Vinci, ma attaccò anche con successo tre piroscafi nemici e compì quella che Enzo Grossi, comandante superiore di Betasom definì «una delle più belle missioni fatte in Atlantico». Un avvincente diario che documenta una pagina di guerra negli abissi.

In-4° (29,9 x 22,2 cm), pp. non numerate 192, legatura editoriale con sovraccoperta illustrata e una seconda sovraccoperta protettiva, in cellophane trasparente, apposta, probabilmente, da vecchio proprietario. Normali, lievi tracce d'uso e del tempo alla sovraccoperta. Completamente illustrato da immagini fotografiche in bianco e nero. Al recto della carta di guardia anteriore e al verso di quella posteriore, nella parte interna non a contatto con le alette della sovraccoperta, leggerissimo, quasi impercettibile, alone color beige, di perfetta forma rettangolare, che si sviluppa in senso verticale rispetto alla pagina, probabilmente determinato, nel tempo, dalla reazione al contatto con le controguardie, fissate, in sede editoriale, con materiale adesivo ai contropiatti. Per il resto, ben conservato.
