Seymour, The Right Hon. Sir Edward H.[Hobart] (1840-1929)
My Naval Career and Travels
xvi, 429 pages. Index. Frontis portrait of author plus eight black and white plates illustrating ships. Seymour was a Royal Navy officer who rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. He saw action in the Crimean War, the Battle of Canton, The Battle of Taku Forts, the Battle of Cixi, and the Boxer Rebellion. This copy belonged to Casper Swinley (1898-1983) of the Royal Navy. His bookplate is affixed to verso of front free endpaper. In addition, his handwritten note affixed to recto of front free endpaper states he carried Admiral Seymour's medals at his funeral on March 7th, 1929. Presentation plate inside front board indicates Captain Swinley donated this copy to a library, thus it bears the markings of a military library. Narrow opening in binding at frontispiece. Back hinge mostly open. A worthy association copy of this informative naval autobiography. Book

Ma il 20 maggio 1916 tre figure emaciate comparvero sulla banchina della stazione di Stromness, nella Georgia del Sud, da dove due anni prima erano partiti a bordo della Endurance. Di loro si era persa ogni traccia. La nave, ritrovandosi incagliata nel pack, aveva costretto l'equipaggio a rimanere in balia dei movimenti del ghiaccio per dieci lunghi mesi e poi era andata distrutta. Admiral Sir Charles Shadwell 1814-1886 was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in Chief China Station. This book given by Shadwell to Captain Washington in 1861 while Shadwell was commanding the HMS Aboukir. Bookplate from the library of Francis Abbott Private Observatory Hobart Town. Abbott 1799-1883 a convict who arrived in Hobart in 1845 and went on to be one of the leading astonomers in Australia collected a large philosophical and scientific library. Shaler studied at Harvard under the legendary Louis Agassiz and would go on to become a Harvard fixture in his own right, as lecturer and professor of paleontology for two decades (1869-1888) and as professor of geology for nearly two more (1888-1906). AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED by GEORGE SHEA as Chief Justice of the Marine Court of New York City and 3 others in the case of ANNE T. BELL vs JAMES LYNCH.
New York October 7-13 1873. 1873. Good. - A series of 4 associated autograph documents consisting of a 6-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Affidavit of Service" signed by George C. Lay notary public attesting that documents were served against James Lynch to appear and show cause in the case brought against him by Anne T. Bell. Attached to this affidavit are three autograph documents relating to the case each penned on 12-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide ruled paper. The first signed by the Chief Justice George Shea on October 7 1873 orders that "the defendant or his attorney show cause before me or one of the justices of this court. why the above entitled actions should not be set down for trial on the calendar of Part III of this court." Signed "Geo Shea". The second document signed by Walter Howe as managing clerk for Hilton Campbell & Bell regarding the case which was commenced in 1872 before Chief Justice Shea and reserved for trial. The document is docketed in ink on the verso. A third document signed by Philip J. Jackson in red ink as Justice of the Marine Court orders that the action be set down for trial on the calendar. This document is also docketed on the verso. Folded with a minor tear to the edge of one fold of the last document. There are occasional ink stains and smudges. Good. <p>Born in Ireland the American magistrate George Shea 1826-1895 was one of the attorneys representing Jefferson Davis the President of the Confederate States at the end of the Civil War. Shea served as corporation attorney for the City of New York and later became Chief Justice of the Marine Court of New York. Shea was the author of "Hamilton A Historical Study" published in 1877.
