A manuscript log of Royal Navy personnel
s.i.: s.n. s.d. 22 leaves. Stitched as issued. Old central vertical fold occasional spotting. Two small sketches of vessels to verso of penultimate leaf. An early nineteenth-century manuscript register of sailors serving aboard a frustratingly unidentified vessel including; boatswains forecastlemen foretopmen misentopmen the captains of the mast afterguard gunners carpenters and marines. There is mention of a Lieutenant Ormond this is potentially Francis Ormond made Lieutenant on 3rd December 1810 and appointed to the frigate Endymion in 1813 off the North coast of America. During the War of 1812 he commanded a division of boats under the orders of Captain Robert Barrie an expedition up the Penobscot river Maine to capture American territory culminating in the Battle of Hampden. He served under the same officer in the action which led to the capture of the American frigate President in January of 1815; and was second lieutenant of the Impregnable at the Battle of Algiers in 1816. The presence of Ormond's name in the manuscript under the heading of '2 division' would suggest that the list was compiled in conjunction with the actions at Maine in 1814. . [s.n.], [s.d.] unknown

Minutes of a court martial holden on board his majesty's ship Prince of Wales in portsmouth harbour On monday the 23rd Day of December 1805 And the three following Days for the trial of Sir robert calder Bart. Vice Admiral of the Blue
Portsmouth: Sold by J. C. Mottley 1806. 98pp. Uncut. Stitched as issued. Scattered spotting. A rare account of the proceedings of the court martial of Royal Navy officer Sir Robert Calder 1744/5-1818 on charges of misconduct during the Battle of Finisterre. On 22nd July 1805 Calder commander of the British fleet engaged Franco-Spanish forces in what would prove to be an indecisive conflict. Many of the enemy were captured including two ships of the line however Calder failed to wrestle into submission the squadron under French Admiral Villeneuve resulting in their escape. Calder erroneously considered his conduct commendable and thus was greatly surprised to find he had been admonished by the British Press. He immediately applied for a court martial though his commander-in-chief Vice Admiral Nelson had already received orders to send him home to face a board of inquiry. The court martial sat on 23rd December. Calder maintained that he had done his utmost to renew the engagement with Villeneuve. Three days later the court found Calder guilty of an error of judgement and he was sentenced to be severely reprimanded. This proved the end of his seagoing career. OCLC records copies at just six locations California Harvard NLS NMM NYPL and USNA; COPAC adds no further. . First edition. 8vo. Sold by J. C. Mottley unknown

Title page browned and stained at gutter scattered spotting. The first edition of a pamphlet decrying the practice of 'Impressing' or forcibly conscripting unwilling sailors into the Navy undertaken by so-called 'press-gangs'. The author appeals to a communal spirit of resilience asking the readers 'Must we tamely submit to be their slaves' and questioning the designation of such statements as 'inflaming the people'. Included subsequently is a response to this letter from the Annual Committee of the Royal Burrows in which the practice of impressing is upheld as 'just and rational measures for the speedy and effectual manning of the navy'. London: Printed for the Booksellers 1779. iv 50pp. Recent tan cloth with gilt title to spine. Spots of soiling to boards. Ink stamp Hastings public library to recto of title. Early ink numerals to title. Creasing to leaves throughout with occasional short tears at margins - in no place effecting text small hole to I1 with slight loss of text loss to corner of final leaf with loss of text though no loss of sense. Admiral Augustus Keppel 1725-1786 served with distinction as an officer of the Royal Navy during the Seven Years War and the American War of Independence. Keppel held his subordinate admiral Sir Hugh Palliser 1723-1796 responsible for the poor state of the Navy during the latter conflict and following defeat at the First Battle of Ushant considered Palliser's conduct as a deliberate betrayal. Keppel began a campaign of calumny the outcome being a series of scandalous scenes in parliament and subsequent courts-martial - each side accusing the other of treason. Keppel was the first to be tried and acquitted in 1779 with Palliser suffering the same shortly after. This is an unrecorded edition of the trial and associated address by Hugh Palliser. Not in ESTC. Two works concerning the courts-martial of Royal Navy officers Admiral Augustus Keppel 1725-1786 and Vice-Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser 1723-1796 respectively. The former had served with distinction during the both the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. Following the latter conflict Keppel held his subordinate admiral Palliser responsible for the poor state of the Navy's fortunes in particular the defeat at the First Battle of Ushant considering Palliser's conduct as a deliberate betrayal. Keppel began a campaign of calumny the outcome being a series of scandalous scenes in parliament and subsequent trials - each side accusing the other of treason. Keppel was the first to be tried and eventually acquitted in 1779 with Palliser enduring the same shortly thereafter. [Russian Navy and Air Force; Russian Revolution]; Sheff
RUSSIAN MANUSCRIPT PERIODICAL. Vakhta: Ezhemesiachnyi aero-morskoi illiustrirovannyi zhurnal. The Look-Out: A Monthly Aero-Nautical Illustrated Journal.
Russia 1929. Paperback. Near Fine. Manuscript periodical in four parts numbered 3 4 11 and 13. Staple-bound heavy cardstock wraps brightly illustrated in pen-and-ink and watercolor; four volumes; 8vo 230 x 180 mm; pp. 136 illustrated throughout with pen-and-ink and watercolour drawings signed "S. Sh." or "S. Sheff" Russia 1929. Covers a little scuffed along spine and edges otherwise fine -- bold and bright.

A compilation of various accounts relating to the Russian Navy and Air Force in the decade following the Revolution recorded in tidy penmanship and with quick watercolors painted direct in text plus nicely accomplished pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations tipped-on showing landscapes sea-scapes portraits and air and sea vessels. The accounts report the travails of various ships including the "Prome" "Paris Commune" "Frunze" the ice-breakers "Ermak" and "Lenin" and others. One part is devoted mostly to the Turkish Fleet and action in the Black Sea during 1914-1917. The aeronautic sections discuss Zeppelin's dirigible and the British R-101. The journal lists various contributors including F. Raskol'nikov L. Berman A. Marti P. Stasevich and others. S. Sheff who drew the illustrations probably produced this journal issuing it over the course of a number of years; the present issues are numbered 3 4 11 and 13 and belong to the fourth year of composition. A nice folk art example of "Grafica Russa" Russian Graphics of the early 20th century combining graphic design illustration and calligraphic interest. paperback
