Admiral John Markham Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and First Naval Lord. Autograph Letter Signed 'J Markham' to John Atkins regarding the 'general drunken habits' of 'Mr Miles Burn' and the impossibility of reinstating him 'to his rank'
Admiralty London. 21 August 1806. The letter is 1p 12mo and is accompanied by the covering 8vo leaf addressed to 'John Atkins Esqre Duke Street Westminster' with a second signature for franking. The covering leaf is endorsed: 'Admiralty August 21 1806 Adml. Markham concerning Miles Burn that it would be impossible to get him reinstated'. Both letter and covering leaf in good condition lightly aged and worn with fold lines. Markham could hardly be more decisive. The letter reads: 'My Dr Sir Your attempts I am sure will be in vain to get Mr Burn restored to his rank. The Evidence is very strong indeed as to his general last word underlined drunken habits and the instances render him for ever incapable last three words underlined of serving His Majesty his heirs or Successors'. At the foot of the page apparently written at a later date: 'I wrote on a scrap of paper written on the other side which I did not see when I wrote this'. Admiralty [London]. 21 August 1806. unknown

Nelson describes his victory at the Battle of Copenhagen. 'Extraordinary' number of 'The London Gazette' containing accounts of the engagement by Nelson and his commanding officer Sir Hyde Parker.
Number 15454. 'Printed by ANDREW STRAHAN Printers Street Gough Square. London' 15 April 1801. 4pp 8vo paginated 401-404. Originally a bifolium but with the leaves separated. In fair condition lightly aged with each leaf carrying in a margin a strip of paper from the mount. Several fold lines. Page one carries the half-penny tax stamp. In small print and double column. The entire number concerns the battle. Begins: 'Admiralty-Office April 15 1801. CAPTAIN OTWAY of His Majesty's Ship the London arrived in Town this Morning with Dispatches from Admiral Sir Hyde Parker Commander in Chief of a Squadron of His Majesty's Ships employed on a particular Service to Evan Nepean Esq; dated on board the London in Copenhagen-Roads the 6th Instant of which the following are Copies:' Parker's long letter to Nepean follows including for example: 'Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson having offered his Services for conducting the Attack had some Days before we entered the Sound shifted his Flag to the Elephant; and after having examined and buoyed the Outer Channel of the Middle Ground his Lordship proceeded with the Twelve Ships of the Line named in the Margin all the Frigates Bombs Fire-Ships and all the small Vessels and that Evening anchored off Draco Point to make his Disposition for the Attack and wait for the Wind to the Southward.' A postscript follows and then copies of two letters apiece from Parker and 'the Commanding Officer of Cronenberg Castle' Stricker the latter in translation. This is followed by Nelson's account of the battle signed in type 'NELSON and BRONTE.' addressed from 'Elephant off Copenhagen 3d April 1801.' It includes: 'From the very intricate Navigation the Bellona and Russel unfortunately grounded but although not in the Situation assigned them yet so placed as to be of Great Service. The Agamemnon could not weather the Shoal of the Middle and was obliged to anchor; but not the smallest Blame can be attached to Captain Fancourt; it was an Event to which all the Ships were liable.' Nelson concludes: 'The Loss in such a Battle has naturally been very heavy. Amongst many other brave Officers and Men who were killed I have with Sorrow to place the Name of Captain Mosse of the Monarch who has left a Wife and Six Children to lament his Loss; and among the Wounded that of Captain Sir Thomas B. Thompson of the Bellona.' The number ends with a long 'List of the Killed and Wounded in the Attack on the Enemy's Line of Defence Batteries &c. on the 2d of April 1801.' Number 15454. Admiral Sir Richard Rodney Bligh Royal Navy officer in American War of Independence. Autograph Letter Signed to the Admiralty regarding ‘Her Majesty’s Sloop the Wasp under my Command’.
‘Wasp Portsmouth 1st. Decr. 1775.’. Bligh’s entry in the Oxford DNB does not note his service on HMS Wasp to which he was appointed in October 1774. According to one authority the ship ‘saw service out of Passage County Cork Ireland from November 1774. In October 1775 Bligh brought sixty volunteers from Ireland into Plymouth and in June 1776 sailed from Portsmouth to Plymouth with money for the dockyard artificers. Towards the end of August the Wasp arrived off the Devonshire port with ten transports bound for North America and she then sailed for Ireland.’ Built in 1749 the 8-gun sloop the Wasp was sold off by the Royal Navy in 1781. In 1784 under the name Mentor she was a slave ship. Good bold signature on letter of 1p 4to. In fair condition on aged and discoloured paper with wear to corners and closed tear along the two postage folds. Addressed to ‘The Honourable The Principal Officers & Commissrs. of His Majesty’s Navy’ parts of last two word chipped away. Docketed ‘1: Decembr. 1775. / Wasp / Captn: Bligh / Book sent’ and ‘Recd. the above Muster Book / TM / 12 Decr. 1775’. The letter reads: ‘Gentlemen / Yesterday I Lodged at the Clerk of the Checks Office at this Port to be forwarded to your Board One Monthly Book for September & October 1775 for His Majesty’s Sloop the Wasp under my Command which please to Acknowledge the receipt off to Waterford in Ireland as I shall sail for that place in a day or two. I am with great respect / Gentlemen / Your most Obedient / Humble Servant R R Bligh’. ‘Wasp, Portsmouth 1st. Decr. 1775.’ unknown

Durham'. According to the DNB Durham having 'cleared the West Indies of American cruisers' 'in June and August 1815 co-operated in the reduction of Martinique and Guadeloupe at which place the last French flag was struck to Durham as the first had been'. The letter begins: 'My Lord I feel no exertion has been wanting on the part of the Navy in the joint capture of Guadeloupe – and did flatter myself <> had given his Nephew the best Situation and provided for most of his friends the admiral might have been offered something but to my surprize on my return from Pointe a Pitre in the <> where I had been in the Public Service all was disposed of – it has been generally in point of Captures the practice to give the admiral the nomanation sic of the Naval officer which is all I request for my Nephew Mr Thomas Calderwood Durham 1797-1842 and have requested Lord Bathurst would be pleased to give it to him – may I hope for your Lordships support'. He complains that in the meantime 'it has been given to Mr King a Gentleman well known to hae thought and acted in opposition to Government which is not paying the Navy nor Army any compliment for their exertions in this Country.' Franked with broken red wax seal and two postmarks to 'Captain Saml Brown R.N.' at Inverleith House Edinburgh. Despite the fact that Martin has 'given <Leppings> the Credit of every improvement in the Service' Napier happens to know 'that other people are deserving of more credit than him' and he wishes to 'bring forward some great names like yours' to 'the Lords & the Country' at the second reading of the Navy Officer Bill. Asks Brown if he introduced 'the Iron Tanks for water now used in the ships Holds'. Asks 'What reward did you ever get for the Cables & how long have you been allowed to supply the Navy & to what extent' Postscript relating to 'Dundonald' Lord Cochrane the Sea Wolf who "is to be restored immediately>" Apparently he was dismissed in 1814 "following a conviction of fraud" but restored in 1832 as per this letter. 16 April 1832; United Services Club, London. unknown

He thanks her for her kind letter ‘and its enclosure from my dear kind old friend Mrs Quilter’. He will visit her later but at present he has ‘several melancholy duties to attend to which prevent my leaving London’. He is also ‘wanted at the Admiralty next week - altho’! - I am not much fit for work!!’ Returning to Mrs Quilter he asks the recipient to ‘tell her that I do not forget all her kindness to me as a Boy - & the kind way she used to try to get me out of scrapes’. See the entry on Admiral Tupper in the Oxford DNB: ‘After the death of his first wife he married second on 24 June 1933 Caroline Maud Abadie 1863-1948 the widow of General Sir Henry Richard Abadie; she was the daughter of Colonel Fanshawe Gostling of the Royal Berkshire regiment.’ 4pp 12mo. On two leaves of blue paper in stamped and postmarked envelope addressed to ‘Mrs. Henderson / c/o Lady Edwina Lewin / Salthrop House / Wroughton / Wilts.’ A long letter in a not entirely straightforward hand. She begins by discussing the recipient’s husband’s improving health she appears to say the handwriting makes the entire transcription doubtful that she ‘has had a dreadful “night mare†time’ over her husband’s health: ‘he began working again at “The Chelsea Reserve W†with Colonel Boyes-Lyon and did too much & had heart attack on July 29th. when I had to take him into the Royal Masonic Hospital for a specialist to attend’. Hornby served as Superintendent of the Royal Naval Hospital and Victualling Yard at Plymouth between 1832 and 1838. This item is 2pp 12mo. Bifolium with thin mourning border. Fifty lines neatly and closely written. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with slight damage and a few closed tears around gutter. Folded for postage. Signed ‘Phipps Hornby’ and with recipient ‘My dear Sir’ unnamed. Pencil note giving note by recipient at head of first page giving prices for butter and cheese ‘for the Year 1834’. A naval hero oversees victualling: ‘I have been giving the best consideration in my power as to the price that should be fixed as a compensation for the Butter and Cheese now served to the Ordinary in the event of its being discontinued and am of opinion that if six pencec Pr. Pound for Butter and five pence for Cheese were allowed it would be as fair a price as could be put upon articles which must necessarily vary so much in value.’ That price ‘would not be opposed by the Ordinary here’ and ‘If there should be any grumbling it will arise from the Prices I have named not putting the Men in the Ordinary quite upon the same footing with the Men in the Dock Yard & Victualling craft the Three halpence a day allowed to these latter being an excess over what I propse to give to the former.’ He thinks that it is ‘very desireable to get rid of this species of Provisions altogether it being a Nuisance and a loss in all ways.’ After a reference to ‘Fresh Beef’ he discusses the cheese he ‘proposed to sell at our late sale’ which ‘tho at present sound and good I should not get 20 shillings per Cat. bid at so that it remains on hand but if a private offer is made to this amount I will take upon myself to let it go.’ He ends with a reference to ‘Mr McIntosh’ not ‘settling his accounts: it is truly vexatious’. ‘Navl Hospl [Naval Hospital, Plymouth] / June 21st. 8vo., Third Impression, with 26 coloured plates, 15 plates in monochrome, very numerous illustrations and diagrams (many full-page) in the text and 2 large folding plans; original navy blue cloth, upper board blocked in blind, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. With front and rear trade advertisement endpapers. The 1937 edition of the 'pusser's bible' was the first major revision since 1932. First issued in 1938, it was reprinted each year until 1943 (though curiously we have been unable to confirm a 1939 issue). All reprints are very slightly abridged (mostly in terms of illustration; in particular the expensive plate overlays of the first impression were quickly abandoned with the outbreak of hostilities). Well produced and exceptionally well illustrated, it was in common use with officers and ratings alike (unlike its sister the Manual of Navigation), and there is a fair argument for its being today the most evocative Royal Navy publication of the war years. Bright, firm copy of the standard WWII edition.

Naval Staff Histories were produced after WWII in order to provide as full an account of the various actions as was possible at the time. The audience was largely serving officers; some of the volumes were classified, not to restrict their distribution but to allow the writers to be as candid as possible. At this stage of history they represent a uniquely valuable resource. This volume contains Battle Summary 18 (Mediterranean Convoys 1941) and Battle Summary 32 (Malta Convoys 1942), completed by J. Owen and originally issued in 1944 and 1945 respectively. These summaries were combined and extensively revised by Pitcairn-Jones and re-issued in 1957 as Selected Convoys (Mediterranean) 1941-42. By this time Pitcairn-Jones had access to the full records including those captured from German and Italian forces.

Admiralty Battle Summaries were written relatively soon after the events they describe (the last of the present collection was produced in 1952) and are based on official documentary material which did not become available to the public at large until 1968. They were written by authors who understood thoroughly their topics, as follows: Operation 'Neptune': Commander L.J. Pitrcairn-Jones; The Campaign in North-West Europe: Commander J.H. Lloyd-Owen; Operation 'Dragoon': Commander W.E.H. Westall. First issued in 1938, it was reprinted each year until 1943 (though curiously we have been unable to confirm a 1939 issue). All reprints are very slightly abridged (mostly in terms of illustration; in particular the expensive plate overlays of the first impression were quickly abandoned with the outbreak of hostilities). Well produced and exceptionally well illustrated, it was in common use with officers and ratings alike (unlike its sister the Manual of Navigation), and there is a fair argument for its being today the most evocative Royal Navy publication of the war years. Roy. 8vo., First Edition thus, with numerous blank interleaves numbered in pagination; blue cloth boards, gilt back, red sprinkled edges, backstrip sunned (but all gilt bright and legible), else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. Printing code: CN 3050/05. THIS COPY WAS RECEIVED ABOARD HMS JASON ON 28 JANUARY 1907 WITH CONFIRMATORY STAMP ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Loosely inserted are three subsequent and relevant Circular Letters, the first also with HMS JASON stamp: a) New Procedure concerning Surveys, and Closing of Watertight Doors; b) Examination of Boilers, Closing Watertight Doors etc; c) Use of Lime in Boilers of HM Ships. HMS JASON (1892-1917) was an ALARM-class Torpedo Gunboat. Shortly after receipt of this copy she was converted to minesweeper and served with the Nore Destroyer Flotilla in WWI until April 1917 when she struck a mine off the Hebridean island of Coll and sank with the loss of thirty lives. EXTREMELY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
