Demi-basane fauve dépoque, plats recouverts de papier marbré rose, dos lisse orné, pièce de titre noire, tranches jaunes. (petit manque à la coiffe supérieure et à la pièce de titre).‎

‎Rare édition originale française (EO anglaise, Londres, la même année) de la relation officielle du voyage de Bligh et de la fameuse révolte du "Bounty" traduite par F. Soulés. Relation complète de son voyage, qu'il publia deux ans après sa "Relation de lenlèvement du Navire le Bounty", parue dès son retour en Angleterre, pour que son témoignage soit connu avant l'arrivée des mutins. Avec la fin du commerce triangulaire, du fait de lIndépendance américaine, les Anglais se trouvèrent en difficulté pour nourrir les esclaves des plantations. Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), naturaliste de la première expédition de James Cook, propose alors au Roi George III dimplanter larbre à pain, espèce quil a observée lors de ce voyage avec Cook dans les îles de la Mer du Sud. William Bligh (1754-1817), ami de Banks et réputé pour ses qualités maritimes est nommé commandant du Bounty et appareille pour Tahiti le 23 décembre 1787 pour ramener cette espèce. Le voyage est long et difficile : ils ne rejoignent Tahiti qu'en octobre 1788. Les Tahitiens acceptent de leur céder des arbres à pain, mais la traversée ayant été plus longue que prévu, ils ne peuvent prendre la mer avant six mois. Latmosphère pénible en mer, ne lest pas moins dans ces îles où plusieurs incidents ont lieu, si bien que le 28 avril, une vingtaine de jours après leur départ (5 avril 1789), Christian Fletcher, enseigne de vaisseau, déclenche la mutinerie, suivie par onze des quarante-deux membres déquipage. Ils enlèvent le navire et forcent Bligh et dix-huit autres membres de léquipage à prendre la mer sur une chaloupe, pour un voyage qui na guère déquivalent dans lhistoire de la marine : dix-neuf hommes sur une chaloupe sur 4 000 miles. Bligh parvint lors de cette périlleuse traversée à cartographier et à nommer des parties inconnues des côtes Nord-est de la Nouvelle-Hollande. L'ouvrage est illustré d'une planche représentant le fruit de l'arbre à pain et deux cartes, la première donnant la route parcourue par Bligh de Tofo à Timor (Nouvelle-Guinée) et la seconde figurant une partie de la côte de Tahiti. Exemplaire bien conservé de la première traduction française de cette relation. 1 vol. 8vo (205 x 130 mm) with : [2] ff. (title, table) ; 372 pp. ; 1 plate and 2 folding maps. (central brown stain at foot of first few leaves, rare soiling). Contemporary fawn half-basane, boards covered with pink marbled paper, ornate smooth spine, black title page, yellow edges. (small loss to upper headpiece and title-piece). Rare original French edition (English EO, London, same year) of the official account of Bligh's voyage and the famous Bounty revolt, translated by F. Soulés. A complete account of his voyage, which he published two years after his Relation de l'enlèvement du Navire le Bounty, published on his return to England, so that his testimony would be known before the arrival of the mutineers. With the end of the triangular trade, American Independence left the English struggling to feed the slaves on the plantations. Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), a naturalist on James Cook's first expedition, proposed that King George III plant the breadfruit tree, a species he had observed on this voyage with Cook to the South Sea islands. William Bligh (1754-1817), a friend of Banks and renowned for his seafaring skills, was appointed commander of the Bounty and set sail for Tahiti on December 23, 1787 to bring back the species. The voyage was long and difficult, and they didn't reach Tahiti until October 1788. The Tahitians agreed to let them have some breadfruit trees, but the crossing took longer than expected, and they couldn't set sail for another six months. The harsh atmosphere at sea was no less so on the islands, where several incidents took place, so much so that on April 28, some twenty days after their departure (April 5, 1789), Christian Fletcher, ship's ensign, triggered a mutiny, followed by eleven of the forty-two crew members. They kidnapped the ship and forced Bligh and eighteen other crew members to take to the sea in a longboat, for a voyage that has few equals in naval history: nineteen men in a longboat for 4,000 miles. During this perilous crossing, Bligh succeeded in mapping and naming unknown parts of the northeast coast of New Holland. The work is illustrated with a plate depicting the fruit of the breadfruit tree and two maps, the first showing Bligh's route from Tofo to Timor (New Guinea) and the second depicting part of the Tahiti coast. A well-preserved copy of the first French translation of this report.‎
