‎Peru.

Hardcover. Very good in very good dust jacket. Slight bowing at rear board oversize book. Text in Spanish. 441 p. : ill. some col. ; 29 cm. This work also commemorated the Sesquicentenario de su natalicio 1834/1984. Section entitled Grau el Marino Eponimo del Pery pro Fernando Romero starts at page 29 and goes to page 68. From Wikipedia: Miguel María Grau Seminario was a renowned Peruvian naval officer and hero of the Naval Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific 1879-1884. He was known as the el Caballero de los Mares Spanish for "Gentleman of the Seas" for his chivalry and is esteemed by both Peruvians and Chileans. He is an iconic figure for the Peruvian Navy and one of the most famous merchant marine and naval military leaders of America. His mother Luisa Seminario y del Castillo motivated Grau to love the sea from his youth. He entered the Paita Nautical School. He first went to sea when he was nine years old going to Fortune Colombia aboard a merchant schooner. Grau later went on various merchant ships to ports in Oceania Asia America and Europe. In 1853 at the age of 19 he left the merchant marine and became an officer candidate of the Peruvian Navy where he developed an outstanding professional reputation. In 1854 he was Military officer of the steamer Rimac. His career was rapid and brilliant. In 1863 he was promoted a year later. In 1864 he was sent to Europe to oversee the construction of ships for the Peruvian fleet. Upon his return Chile and Peru joined together in a bi-national fleet against Spanish attempts to reclaim their American colonies. In 1868 he was recalled to the Navy and was named commander of the Huáscar with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. By June 1 1874 he became the commanding officer of the Peruvian Navy's fleet and later became a member of the Congress of the Republic of Peru as an elected congressman in 1876 representing Paita. the War of the Pacific against Chile began on 5 April 1879 Miguel Grau was aboard the Huáscar as its captain and the Commander of the Navy. Capitán Grau played an important role by interdicting Chilean lines of communication and supply damaging capturing or destroying several enemy vessels and bombarding port installations. Grau's Huáscar became famed for moving stealthily striking by surprise and then disappearing. These actions put off a Chilean invasion by sea for six months. At the Battle of Iquique after Huáscar sank the Chilean corvette Esmeralda by ramming her Grau ordered the rescue of the surviving crew from the waters. Grau also wrote condolences to the widow of his opponent Arturo Prat returning his sword and personal effects. At the port of Antofagasta after sneaking up on an enemy ship he courteously asked the crew to abandon ship before opening fire. These and other gestures earned him the nickname of el Caballero de los Mares "Gentleman of the Seas" from his Chilean opponents acknowledging an extraordinary sense of chivalry and his gentlemanly behavior combined with his highly-efficient and brave combat career. Almirante Grau was killed by an armor-piercing shell during the Naval Battle of Angamos on 8 October 1879. Huáscar was captured by the Chileans after incurring severe casualties in the close-range artillery duel. Although most of Grau's body was not recovered his remains were buried with military honours in Chile which were returned to Peru in 1958. For many years after his death his name was called in a ceremonial roll-call of the Peruvian Navy. His final resting place lies at the Escuela Militar Naval del Peru in El Callao in an underground mausoleum. He posthumously received the rank of Gran Almirante del Perú Grand Admiral of Peru in 1967 by order of the Peruvian Congress. A portrait of Almirante Grau is on display in the museum ship Huáscar. In the year 2000 Miguel Grau was recognized as the "Peruvian of the Millennium" by popular vote. Secretaría del Ministro de Marina hardcover‎

Cover has some wear and soiling. Name of previous owner in ink on front cover. iv 372 148 and 44 pages. Illustrations. Diagrams. Index. Nonresident Career Course. Glossary. Combat Arm and Hand Signals. This reflects the state of knowledge the state of practice and the state of the art between the end of the Vietnam War and the beginning of Persian Gulf military operations. A Seabee is a member of the United States Naval Construction Forces NCF. The word "Seabee" comes from initials "CB" which in turn comes from the term "Construction Battalion". The Seabees have a history of building bases bulldozing and paving thousands of miles of roadway and airstrips and accomplishing myriad other construction projects in a wide variety of military theaters dating back to World War II. The newcomers begin "A" School preliminary training fresh out of boot camp or they come from the fleet after their service term is met spending about 75% of the twelve weeks immersed in hands-on training. The remaining 25% is spent in classroom instruction. From "A" School new Seabees most often report to an NMCB command for their first tour of duty. For training the new Seabees attend a four-week course known as Expeditionary Combat Skills ECS at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport Mississippi and Port Hueneme California. ECS is also being taught to all personnel who report to a unit in the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. ECS is a basic combat-skills course where the students spend time in a classroom environment learning map reading and land navigation battlefield first aid how to lay out defensive plans how to conduct patrols vehicle egress and many other combat-related skills. Half of each course is spent at a shooting range where students learn basic rifle marksmanship and then qualify with the M16A2 and M16A3 service rifles. ECS students also learn fundamentals of the M9 service pistol and qualify. At the end of training new Seabees are ready to perform with their new battalion. During their tenure with an NMCB personnel may be assigned to a crew-served weapon such as the MK 19 40 mm machine gun the M2HB.50-caliber machine gun or the M240 machine gun. Many reserve units still field variants of the M60 machine gun. Until 2012 Seabees wore the U.S. Woodland camouflage uniform or the legacy tri-color Desert Camouflage Uniform the last members of the entire U.S. military to do so but are now transitioning to the NWU Type III. Seabees use ALICE field gear as well as some units working with Marines use USMC issue Improved Load Bearing Equipment ILBE gear. ‎Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office 1953. First Edition First Printing thus. Stiff boards. Good. 24 cm xi 1 692 pages. Illustrations some color. Figures. Tables. Glossary. Index. Some weakness to boards. Boards somewhat scuffed and soiled. Name in ink inside front board. Slight darkening to text. Korean War-era work. Discusses the medical aspects of Atomic Warfare. Has chapters on embalming preventive medicine pharmacy first aid nursing as well as on chemical and biological warfare. This Handbook of the Hospital Corps 1953 s a lineal successor to a series of such books which began in 1914 but it is not strictly a new edition of any of them being largely rewritten and containing much new material. It is officially approved as a textbook for the instruction of hospital corpsmen not only of the Navy but of other Government services which may choose to use it. It is intended also to serve as a guide and reference book for all corpsmen especially those on duty independent of a medical officer. To be prepared to render the best possible aid to the sick and wounded it is essential to continually develop new knowledge and skills and to keep abreast of all recent developments. Contents include History of the Hospital Corps; Anatomy and Physiology; First Aid and Emergency Procedures; Nursing and Nursing Procedures; Food in Health and Disease; Preventive Medicine; Material Medica and Pharmacology; Pharmacy Chemistry Laboratory Techniques and Procedures Embalming; Medical and Dental Departments with the Fleet Marine Force Medical Aspects of Atomic Warfare Chemical Warfare Biological Warfare Medical Department Administration and Independent Duty. The Navy Hospital Corps is comprised of more than 30000 active duty and reserve Hospital Corpsmen that are practicing or training in 40 technical specialties. Hospital Corpsmen are stationed at military treatment facilities medical education institutions clinics hospitals and research units located within the United States and various overseas locations. Hospital Corpsmen provide direct support to Navy and Marine Corps commands squadrons battalions and units. Hospital Corpsmen deploy in support of combat operations disaster relief and humanitarian assistance missions providing the best care our nation can offer ashore and afloat. In the United States Navy in World War II hospital corpsmen assigned to Marine units made beach assaults with the marines in every battle in the Pacific. Corpsmen also served on thousands of ships and submarines.3 Three unassisted emergency appendectomies were performed by hospital corpsmen serving undersea and beyond hope of medical evacuation. The hospital corps has the distinction of being the only corps in the U.S. Navy to be commended in a famous speech by Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal after the conclusion of the war. Following the war the hospital corps changed its rating title to the generic term it had used all along—hospital corpsman. The rates of hospital corpsman third class HM3 second class HM2 and first class HM1 and chief hospital corpsman HMC were supplemented by senior chief hospital corpsman HMCS and master chief hospital corpsman HMCM in 1958. Hospital corpsmen continued to serve at sea and ashore and accompanied marines and Marine units into battle during the Korean and Vietnam wars. United States Government Printing Office hardcover‎

‎US. Department of the Navy, Naval Historical Center, ed. by James L. Mooney U. S.‎

‎Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships Volume VIII: Historical Sketches--Letters W through Z.‎

‎Washington DC: U. S. Government Printing Office 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. good. Quarto 576 v.8 only illus. maps bibliography some wear to top and bottom spine edges. Foreword by Edward Hidalgo Secretary of the Navy; introduction by Rear Admiral John D. H. Kane Jr. Director of Naval History. This is the final volume in the multi-volume Dictory of American Naval Fighting Ships. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships DANFS is the official reference work for the basic facts about ships used by the United States Navy. When the writing project was developed the parameters for this series were designed to cover only commissioned US Navy ships with assigned names. If the ship was not assigned a name it was not included in the histories written for the series. In addition to the ship entries DANFS and the online links have been expanded to include appendices on small craft histories of Confederate Navy ships and various essays related to naval ships. DANFS was published in print by the Naval Historical Center NHC as bound hardcover volumes ordered by ship name from Volume I A–B in 1959 to Volume VIII W–Z in 1981. Several volumes subsequently went out of print. In 1991 a revised Volume I Part A covering only ship names beginning with A was released. Work continues on revisions of the remaining volumes. As the DANFS is a work of the U.S. government its content is in the public domain and the text is often quoted verbatim in other works including in some cases Wikipedia articles. Many websites organized by former and active crew members of U.S. Navy vessels include a copy of their ships' DANFS entries. The Dictionary limits itself largely to basic descriptions and brief operational notes and includes almost no analysis or historical context. Unless otherwise specified all the ships illustrated in this volume are commission ships of the United States Navy with their names preceded by the Identification USS. U. S.
