‎Royal Naval College Dartmouth. 1 April 1918. 1p. 12mo. In fair condition on lightly aged and worn paper. Perforated at right edge and headed 'This half should be retained by Parent or Guardian.' The absent 'fly leaf' was to be 'returned to the Commanding Officer not later than the 6th April with the answers filled in giving the fullest information.' The first part of the memorandum is mainly concerned with railway arrangements for those travelling to Scotland Ireland London Bristol Plymouth Exeter. 'Cadets will be provided with Army Form W3504 which will enable them to travel 1st Class at less than the ordinary 3rd class fare now prevailing. The Fleet Paymaster of the College will defray all travelling expenses which will subsequently be charged against the Cadet's personal account.' The latter part of the memorandum refers to bans on 'parcels of eatables of any kind' and smoking which is 'against the regulations of the Navy until the age of 18' and 'special medicines'. The memorandum concludes: 'To avoid Cadets wearing underclothing of insufficient warmth it is requested Parents will only send back with them underclothing suitable for the time of year. As regards pocket money the recognised sum of £1 on return from leave is considered amply sufficient for all ordinary requirements. Should Parents consider it necessary to send more they are asked to impress on the Cadet that the money should be lodged at once in the Cadet Bank whence it can be readily withdrawn under the Cadet Bank regulations.' ‎Royal Navy. Dating from May 1812 with later notes referring to cancellation in March 1818. Four items in fair condition on lightly aged and worn paper with slight creasing. ONE: Printed form partially completed in manuscript. On one side of 31.5 x 19.5 cm piece of laid paper with Britannia watermark. Headed: 'PRIVATE SIGNALS for His Majesty's Brigs Cutters Luggers &c. employed in Cruizing on the Coasts of the United Kingdom Commanded by Lieutenants viz.' The day section ends with the note: 'N. B. Where Pendant is not mentioned Flag is implied.' The following is an example of the 'Night' text with manuscript parts in square brackets. 'The first Signal is to be made by burning two false fires - which first made Answered by shewing 3 lights of equal height.' Also: 'The Vessel that is first hailed is to answer "Bath." And the Ship which hailed is to reply "Richmond."' Printed at foot of page: 'N. B. The Night Signals are also made use of by the Packets in the Service of the Post-Office.' TWO: Printed form - clearly a proof - on one side of a piece of 31.5 x 19 cm paper. The top corners previously stuck down have been cut away resulting in some loss of text. ‎Admiral Beatty Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet thanks the U.S. Sixth Battle Squadron for their help in 'bringing about the greatest naval victory in history'. Pamphlet: '“Comrades of the Mist†Admiral Beatty's Message to U.S. Squadron'.‎

‎'Reprinted from “The Times†London Wednesday 18 December 1918.' London: Chiswick Press. 1918. An attractive Chiswick Press item on the firm's own paper possibly printed for Beatty himself. No other copy traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. 3pp. 12mo. Printer's slug at foot of otherwise-blank reverse of second leaf. On laid paper with 'Chiswick Press' watermark. Aged and worn with pin-hole through top inner corner of both leaves and light staining at foot of first page. Reprinting a speech thanking the US Atlantic Fleet 'again again and again for the great part the Sixth Battle Squadron has played in bringing about the greatest naval victory in history'. The speech is preceded by the following: 'Admiral Sir David Beatty Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet delivered the following address on board the U.S.S. “New York†on 1 December before the detachment of the American Sixth Battle Squadron from the Grand Fleet'. Beatty states that he has 'received messages from several people offering sympathy to the Grand Fleet' that it was 'unable to strike their blow for the freedom of the world': 'I had always certain misgivings and when the Sixth Battle Squadron became part of the Grand Fleet those misgivings were doubly strengthened and I knew they would throw up their hands. Apparently the Sixth Battle Squadron was the straw that broke the camel's back.' Regarding the Americans and the North Sea he says: 'This is a queer place as you found … but I can say that those of you whom I have seen during the last twelve months seem to have improved in many ways if it is possible and I think the North Sea has a health-giving quality which must be put against all the bad points of which it has so many.' There are a few references to his host Admiral Rodman. 'Reprinted from “The Times,†London, Wednesday, 18 December 1918.' London: Chiswick Press. [1918] unknown‎

‎Admiral David Robertson Macdonald 1817 1910 Scottish Royal Navy officer who served under six sovereigns his son David Macdonald‎

‎Admiral David Robertson-Macdonald. Autograph transcripts of 3 documents relating to his defence of Kororarika NZ against an attack by 'natives' during the Flagstaff War. With 88 eighty-eight newspaper obituaries and other biographical matter.‎

‎Edinburgh Scotland; Kororarika Nelson and Auckland New Zealand. The transcripts made by the Admiral towards the end of his life from documents dating from 1845. The newspaper obituaries all dating from 1910. Other matter from 1918. At the outbreak of the Flagstaff War Robertson-Macdonald was serving as Commander of HMS Hazard. On 11 March 1845 he was severely wounded while leading the defence of the town of Kororarika now Russell from 'the attack of an overwhelming body of natives' resulting in the loss of six of his men. The three transcripts that form Item One below relate to this action and were presumably made out by the Admiral himself towards the end of his life in a shaky hand and with a number of errors. They are in a contemporary shaky old man's hand and in the residue of the family papers. Of particular interest is the first of the three transcripts which unlike the other two does not appear to have been published. The original has not been traced and it may be that only the present copy survives. This item together the rest of the collection described below derives from the papers of the Admiral's son David Macdonald Robertson-Macdonald. ONE: Autograph transcripts 4pp. folio of three documents relating to the defence of Kororarika. All three on a bifolium of ruled Britannia paper by Waterston & Sons of Edinburgh where the Admiral was resident at the end of his life. In good condition lightly-aged. The first of the three transcripts is a letter 2pp. addressed 'To David Robertson Esq Acting Command of H.M Ship Hazard' and dated from 'Auckland New Zealand 26 March 1845'. The Admiral notes in pencil that '213 signed' the document. The first paragraph reads: 'We the undersigned Inhabitants of Auckland and we the late Residents of Kororarika are desirous of expressing our gratitude to you for your gallant exertions in the late affair at the Bay of Island sic and our lively and sincere sympathy with you under your present sufferings from the many and severe wounds by which your life has been seriously endangered whilst defending the wives and children and the lives and property of British Subjects from the attack of an overwhelming body of well armed and determined Savages in open rebellion against the authority of British Law and the Majesty of the British Flag'. The second paragraph refers to 'the Hazards Officers and Crew who accompanied you in the Malava Pass when you so resolutely and completely repulsed a band of upwards of 400 natives'. In the third paragraph the authors state that they 'trust with confidence to the justice of the Rulers of our distant Mother Country'. In the second transcript - 'From The New Zealand Spectator April 5th. 1845' - 'the Settlers' conclude by stating 'That Mr Hector and other Civilians at the Bay of Islands set an example we hope all other Colonists will follow'. The third transcript is from an undated letter 1p. 'To Acting Commander David Robertson H.M.S. Hazard' from 'The settlers of Nelson who had signed the Memorial' praising 'the promptitude with which on a strange element you threw yourself almost single handed between your defenceless Fellow Countrymen and the hord sic of armed savages that was pouring down on them of the gallantry with which you acquitted yourself in the personal encounter and of the personal courage with which you continued to rally your small force till with a broken sword and many musket balls in yr. body you were carried from the field of battle'. The third transcript was published in the Wellington Independent where the original was said to be 'lying at the Examiner office for signature'. TWO: White card 13 x 8 cm with rounded corners carrying printed notice of the Admiral's death from The Times 18 May 1910. An unusual item presumably printed by The Times itself with the notices of six 'DEATHS' beginning with the Admiral's beneath the newspaper's banner and the date 'LONDON WEDNESDAY MAY 18 1910.' In very good condition lightly-aged. THREE: 88 press cuttings of obituaries of the Admiral 74 of them attached to printed slips of three London cuttings agencies 68 from the Temple Press Cutting Offices four from Woolgar & Roberts and one apiece from T. B. Browne Ltd and the General Press Cutting Association Ltd. the others loose. FOUR: Two autograph biographical notes relating on the Admiral by his son David Macdonald Robertson-Macdonald both written on envelopes postmarked 1918; together with an Autograph Card Signed to him from S. R. Macdonald postmarked 25 February 1918; with anonymous manuscript transcriptions of biographical entries on card with letterhead of the Royal United Service Institution Whitehall. FIVE: David Macdonald Robertson-Macdonald's printed funeral service 'Entered into Rest Sunday 13th July 1919.' 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Printed in purple. Worn and aged. With manuscript 1p. 4to setting out his service in the First World War in 'the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for the Anti-Aircraft Corps': 'He came into action with the gun on 8th. Each title page in grey lettering. <br /> <br /> Published to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Moscow subway this two-volume set is a splendid photographic journey through the Russian capital's gorgeous underground. Indeed the Moscow subway was one of the Soviet Union's most revolutionary architectural projects with stations constructed as luxurious "palaces for the people" with its chandeliers reflective marble walls intricate mosaics high ceilings and heroic statues all of which creating an opulent space that was accessible for the city’s workers. <br /> <br /> The first designs for Moscow’s subway were submitted to city officials under the reign of Czar Nicholas II in 1902. Moscow wanted to rival earlier systems in London Paris and Berlin but the Russian city’s plans were repeatedly postponed due to the uprising of 1905 WWI 1914-1918 and the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. Metro plans were finally approved by Joseph Stalin in 1931 and construction work began two years later under the supervision of Lazar Moiseyevich Kaganovich. The Moscow metro finally opened on May 15 1935. <br /> <br /> Of the 120 plates contained in this work 60 per portfolio 104 are b/w photographic reproductions showing subway operators at work people waiting for their train passengers boarding and onboard trains as well as outside and inside views of the Russian capital's subway infrastructure. Some photographs depict bas-reliefs friezes marble and bronze statues. 16 plates are color illustrations of various stations. All the photographs were taken between 1935 and 1940 by some of the best Russian photographers of the period. <br /> <br /> The captioned photographic reproductions and color illustrations are tipped-in onto a 17 x 13" white cardstock with image size varying from 12 1/4 x 9 1/4" to 7 1/4 x 9 1/4". <br /> <br /> Text and captions in Russian. ‎Captain Basil Hall 1788 1844 Scottish explorer and Royal Navy officer:‎

‎Captain Basil Hall RN Scottish explorer. Autograph Letter Signed 'Basil Hall' praising Florence describing a view of 'Dom Miguel' and discussing his homesickness.‎

‎Florence. 7 September 1834. 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Thirty-five lines of closely-written text. Addressed by Hall on reverse of second leaf to 'Mrs. Stisted Villa Broderick Lucca Baths' with note that the letter is 'Forwarded By Christopher. Pearson'. He begins by introducing to Mrs Stisted and her husband 'Col. Stisted' the bearer of the 'note' 'a friend of ours Mr Pearson who is retreating out of the hot weather here in the hopes of finding coolness at the Baths.' The Halls will be 'glad if you can put him in the way of seeing the <Liars> dead & living of your charming place.' The nights in Florence are 'charmingly cool - at least in our Hotel the Quatre Nations - which we have all to ourselves. We visited the Palazzo Buonarotti on the day & hour you directed & we saw the Paintings - but not the master of the House. His Servant however on learning that we came from you was very civil & showed us everything'. He describes their plans for the coming days and the passage of 'Dom Miguel' of whom nobody caught sight 'except some fortunate Couriers & a stray Laquais de Place or two - out of employ like Miguel himself though the true & lawful Sovereign of Portugal'. He ends with praise of the beauty of Florence 'but in my case anything which shortens the chain which I drag with me when from home is a pleasure - so I rejoice to find that we are steering north once more'. A postscript concerns 'Mme Sanprini'. The recipient is presumably Clotilda Elizabeth Stisted 1790-1868 daughter of Bladen Swinney of Dublin author of 'Letters from the Bye-Ways of Italy. By Mrs. Stisted. With illustrations by Col. Stisted' London: John Murray 1845. There is however no mention of Hall or Pearson in the book. Florence. 7 September 1834. unknown‎

‎PH. Colomb [Vice-Admiral Philip Howard Colomb, RN (1831–1899), Royal Navy officer, historian, critic, and inventor.]: P. H.‎

‎Vice-Admiral Philip Howard Colomb; naval tactician inventor Arctic explorer etc Two Autograph Letters Signed "P H Colomb" both to an Editor unnamed about his article on "Colomb lights" for naval vessels.‎

‎18 Edith Villas Fulham S.W. 29 Jan and 4 Feb. no year given; 1867. Two ALSs four pages each an expansive hand 12mo bifoliums fold marks good condition. LETTER ONE: "I have sent you by Book Post an article on Griffons loss. To show that I do not speak at random in this article I should tell you that I have private letters from the Commodore Hornby saying 'I wish you would hasten . the supply of your Lamps. Griffons see note below loss bears on the subject.'. I wrote in August begging that all vessels coming out here might be supplied with Colomb's lights. I find the last comers are not so blessed. Without I think being prejudiced by my own interest I cannot help being indignant when I know that this loss is altogether due to the obstinacy on the part of the last Board. If there had been full means of communication between the ships Davidson would most likely have said all he wanted by signal instead of leaving his ship." LETTER TWO: He is obliged to the Editor to "have opened his columns to review the matter of signals- I am now about to ask you to allow me to make myself heard in the matter of Collisions at sea." He has sent an article "in the Kenyon case which I hope may find admission and I propose a further notice as you will see. I attended to every word of the Court Martial and to all the proceedings of the Admiralty Court and without egotism I may say I have made myself a competent judge of the whole question." Postscript "Will you kindly return the article if not suitable". Note: "Intelligence has been received from the West Coast of Africa of the loss of Her Majesty's gun vessel Griffon. It appears that the Griffon and Pandora when standing into Little Popoe in the Bight of Benin on the evening of the 2nd of October unfortunately came into collision and that the Griffon ran on to the beach shortly afterwards. The Mullet and Pandora had endeavoured without success to get the Griffon off up to the evening of the 6th of October and it was feared she would become a total wreck. Officers and men are all safe and well". 18 Edith Villas, Fulham, S.W., 29 Jan and 4 Feb. [no year given; 1867] unknown‎

‎ER. Fremantle [Admiral The Honourable Sir Edmund Robert Fremantle (1836 – 1929), Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-C‎

‎Admiral Fremantle; Titanic Autograph Letter Signed "ER Fremantle" to unnamed correspondent author of a Poem about the sinking of the Titanic congratulating and criticising.‎

‎Headed 44 Lower Sloane Street S.W. 4 May 1912. Three pages 12mo bifolium very good condition. Text: "A line to acknowledge your stirring poem on the loss of the Titanic which I admire much. I suppose & hope that the story of the band is true but it requires some corroboration. May I make one criticism - Why 'tinselled' heroes- There is something in the pomp & circumstance of war no doubt but leaders in a forlorn hope are heroes all the same; and mere passive resignation to death in which the Chinese would surpass us is not so superior to the courage which induces a man to 'seek the bubble reputation e'en at the cannon's mouth' as you would put it- Excuse the criticism-". Note: I haven't managed to find a Poem about the sinking of the Titanic with the word "tinselled" in it. [Headed] 44 Lower Sloane Street, S.W., 4 May [1912?] unknown‎
