‎Velters Cornewall Berkeley (1754-1804), Royal Navy officer who served in the American War of Independence and the French Revolut‎

‎Captain Velters Cornewall Berkeley RN. Autograph Letter Signed as captain of HMS Emerald requesting that the Commissioners of the Navy will pay the company of HMS Juno who have been ‘turned over’ to the Emerald.‎

‎‘Emerald Nore the 12 Decr 1795’. At the time of writing Berkeley’s newly-constructed HMS Emerald had just completed her coppering and fitting-out at Woolwich. Sailing to join Jervis’s Mediterranean fleet within less than a year she would be involved in controversy. Following the Battle of Cape St Vincent 14 February 1797 in which HMS Emerald was too lightly built to take part the victorious Jervis sent Berkeley off with a squadron of five ships in search of the disabled Spanish flagship Santisima Trinidad. On 20 February Berkeley declined to engage when he sighted her under tow. This decision was widely criticised and there were calls for Berkeley’s court-martial. Two months later on 26 April 1797 HMS Emerald was cruising with the Irresistible off the Spanish coast when they captured two enemy frigates one of which sank at sea. 1p folio. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with slight chipping to corners and edges. Addressed to ‘Principal Officers & Commrs. of HMs. Navy’. Reads: ‘Gentlemen / His Majesty’s Ship under my Command having arrived here this day I have to request you will cause the necessary Steps to be taken for the Payment of the Company of His Majesty’s Ship Juno who have been turned over to serve in the Emerald as soon as possible as I am in hourly Expectation of receiving Orders to proceed to Sea - / I am / Gentlemen / Your humble Servt / J. Cornewall Berkeley’. Docketed on reverse: ‘12 Decr. 95 / Captn Berkeley / Emerald / desires he may be paid’. Also on reverse: ‘Will the Board please to Order the Juno’s Pay Books which were paid in Tower to be forwarded to Shearness. sic / P. H. / 14 Decembr.’ and the following with the initials of three commissioners ‘Let the Books be sent accordingly / CH Captain Charles Hope Deputy Comptroller of the Navy 1795-1801 JH John Henslow 1730-1815 Surveyor to the Navy 1784-1806 GM / Acquaint Captn’. ‘Emerald, Nore, the 12 Decr 1795’. unknown‎

‎Edward Foord Bromley (1776-1836), Royal Navy surgeon and Naval Officer at Hobart Town, Tasmania, putative embezzler [Sir Sidney‎

‎‘The Sicilians are not quite so well disposed towards us’: Edward Foord Bromley Royal Navy surgeon and source of Tasmanian scandal. Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Sidney Smith from HMS America at Palermo describing the unsettled state of Sicily.‎

‎‘H M Ship America Palermo. / Septr 11. 1813.’. An excellent letter describing the state of affairs in Sicily during the period of British occupation 1806-1814. The recipient Sir Sidney Smith see Oxford DNB was second in command to Sir Edward Pellew head of the Mediterranean squadron which included Bromley’s ship HMS America a 76-gun third-rater launched only three years before in 1810. The present letter is written with the ship on the verge of a notable engagement described in the European Magazine March 1814 pp.245-247 quoting from the London Gazette. From Bromley’s entry by P. R. Eldershaw in the Australian Dictionary of Biography it would appear that he was merely incompetent and that the true embezzler of the £8388 Naval Office and Treasury funds discovered in 1824 was his convict clerk Bartholomew Broughton. Bromley certainly did all he could to pay the money back. The present item is 4pp 4to on a bifolium. In good condition lightly aged with folds for postage. Signed ‘E F. Bromley’ and with valediction addressed to ‘my Dear Sir Sidney’. Begns: ‘My dear Sir: / by the return of the Thistle to the Fleet I embrace the opportunity of giving you my little Information of what is going on here: it would seem by the precautions taken that we are a little afraid. The Sicilians are not quite so well-disposed towards us as we could wish - one Hundred Men as a Picquet from each of our Regts. mount Guard every night - the Artillery Horses are constantly kept saddled. and the troops told to hold themselves in readiness to turn out at a moments warning.’ He continues: ‘Their Parliament is now sitting - and have been extremely Violent on the Subject of Quarantine at Messina. Genl. Montreson Sir Henry Tucker Montresor had given their board of Health some cause of complaint respecting his Interference this came here officially and they noted his conduct censurable and that two of their Members should be sent to England with a Complaint to the Prince Regent this was however lost in the House of Lords.’ He reports that ‘such is their dread of the Plague’ that the Sicilians would not allow the ‘Horses lately arrived from Egypt’ to land: ‘they are gone to Spain - but to obviate the difficulty arising from the want of those Horses they voted 15000 Dollars for the purchase of others in this country’. The second half of the letter covers topics including Prince Belmonte’s departure from office the king never going ‘to the city’ the throwing open of ‘all reserves respecting. Game’ that do not have ‘a wall of a certain Height around them’ the ill effects of ‘regulations. respectingg the Necessaries of Life’: ‘Fish is hardly to be procured - and yesterday not an Egg to be found in the Markett’ a report from Naples of a renewal of the armistice ‘another from Messina Via Clabria says Austria has joined the Allies and that Hostilities have recommenced’. Bromley concludes: ‘all here looking out anxiously for the expected promotion - I am much afraid I shall loose sic my good Captain the future admiral Sir Josias Rowley 1765-1842 who most probably will be Included. This loss I shall feel in no trifling degree - for I have experienced the utmost kindness from him’. After a reference to ‘Harris’ he ends with ‘respects to Captn. Smith’. ‘H M Ship America Palermo. / Septr 11. 1813.’ unknown‎

‎J. H. Grose, Royal Navy Assistant Surgeon of His Majesty's Ship Captain, 1806 [Rear-Admiral Robert Carthew Reynolds; Thomas John‎

‎‘The Reefer’s pain’: Royal Navy 1806. Unpublished Autograph Poem ‘The Cockpit’ Signed by ‘J H Grose Assistant Surgeon’ HMS Captain describing a midshipman's life with reference to Rear-Admiral Robert Carthew Reynolds and Thomas John Dibdin.‎

‎3 February 1806. On board HMS Captain. An interesting and well-written poem unpublished casting light on the life of a midshipman in the Royal Navy in the year after Trafalgar. The author of this poem is frustratingly elusive he was perhaps a member of the family of the antiquary Francis Grose 1731-1791 but the 1787 Captain was a 74-gun third rater of some renown having been captained by Nelson at the 1797 Battle of St Vincent. In the year following this poem she would act as one of the escorts for the expedition that left Falmouth and eventually attacked Buenos Aires. She was broken up in 1813 after being wrecked off Plymouth. The present item is a holograph of an eighty-six-line poem in heroic couplets. Headed ‘The Cockpit’ and signed and dated at the end ‘J H Grose Assistant Surgeon of his Majesty’s Ship Captain - / Feby. 3rd. 1806/.’ 4pp 4to. On bifolium. In good condition on lightly creased and worn unwatermarked gilt-edged wove paper with several crease from folding. Tiny closed tear at leading edge of the first leaf. The poem begins: ‘Within those sacred Bulwarks of the deep / Where gallant sailors constant vigils keep / Lies an abode obscur’d from chearful day / Where all their sunshine is a taper’s ray. Yet here Britannia boasts a youthful band / Who for the welfare of thine native land / Leaves all the blandishments of youthful ease / And quit the welcome home for boisterous seas. / Furnish’d with Fenning Bonnycastle Moore mathematical text books used in a midshipman’s education / And other books of celebrated lore / A quadrant pocket case of instruments complete / A Leather Hat & uniform thats neat.’ A little later there is more detail of maritime life: ‘Arrived on board his future messmates join / And ask him in the starboard birth to dine.’ Naval fare is satirized: ‘Oh hard salt junk - bad biscuit & thick wine.’ The new midshipman’s duties are described: ‘When night comes on & round the Cockpit goes / The careful master who the lights must close / His hammock slung above the cable tier / He well may ask - “can mortals sure lie here†He has a fitful sleep ‘Till Hammocks up proclaim his time to rise / And hot Burgon his breakfast now supplies.’ The sailor has ‘grieved when quarter Masters yells / Assail’d the Reefer’s ears with “past eight†bells’. There follows a criticism of complaining ‘Landsmen’ after which comes the couplet ‘But thou O Reynolds one exception claim / From those who bear of tyranny the names / And grateful here the Poet repays / A faint but faithful tribute to thy praise.’ It is accompanied by the following note in the margin at top right of p.3: ‘Capt. Robt Carthew Reynolds of H. M. S. Princess Royal a Gentleman not more distinguished for his Valour than his Urbanity’. Reynolds 1745-1811 captained the Princess Royal from to 1807 was promoted to Rear-Admiral the following year and died on his flagship the St George in a great storm that killed two thousand sailors off Jutland in December 1811. A little less than half the poem remains and it continues in much the same tone with reference to the popular maritime poet Thomas John Dibdin 1771-1841: ‘Dibdin! thy Muse will cheer the Sailor’s heart / Thy loyal songs their energy impart.’ The poem concludes: ‘And thus successive years renew their reign / Till six long twelvemonths ease the Reefer’s pain. / When having pass’d the due examination / A wardroom then becomes his future station. / In such abodes immortal Nelson dwell’d / Whose matchless deeds all heroes have excell’d. / And here exulting may Britannia trace / The infant heroes of a future race; / By none in virtue or in arms suppass’d / And save My Country Heaven! shall be their last!’ 3 February 1806. On board HMS Captain. hardcover‎

‎Robert Kennedy Thomson of Daljarrock, Ayrshire, Scotland, Royal Navy Officer in the Napoleonic Wars [HMS Imperieuse; Sir Henry D‎

‎A Scottish Royal Navy Midshipman in the Napoleonic Wars. Autograph Letter Signed to his mother from Robert Kennedy Thomson of Daljarrock giving news from HMS Imperieuse and commenting on news from Scotland.‎

‎‘H.M. Ship Imperieuse Port Mahon Minorca / Jany. 12th. 1813.’. See Thomson’s entry in O’Byrne’s ‘Naval Biographical Dictionary’ 1849. He had entered the navy in 1811 ‘on board the Impérieuse 38 Capt. Hon. Henry Duncan’ and would retire with the rank of Lieutenant after a reasonably eventful career in 1829. In 1849 he was said by O’Byrne to be ‘a Captain in the Ayrshire Militia’. On 30 September 1864 the London Gazette listed him among the ‘Lieutenants on Reserved List to be Retired Commanders’. The Imperieuse 1805 which had gained a high reputation for her exploits under Admiral Cochrane had been transferred to the command of Sir Henry Duncan 1786-1835 in 1810. An interesting letter with a good balance of content between news of the Scottish gentry and of life in the Royal Navy. 3pp 4to. On bifolium. Addressed to ‘My Dear Mother’ and signed ‘your ever affectionate and loving / Son Rob K Thomson’. In good condition lightly aged with slight wear to second leaf which has the customary slight damage from the breaking of the seal. Folded four times into packet. The first 52 of the 54 lines of closely and neatly written text cover both sides of the first leaf of the bifolium with the last two lines at the head of the recto of the second leaf the verso of which carries with four postmarks one from Portsmouth and the remains of the red wax seal the address to ‘Robert Thomson Esqre / of Daljarrock / Air / Scotland’. He begins by informing her that the box she ‘sent out by Capt Clarke has never arrived. I have made every enquiry after it and cannot so much as learn as if such a Ship had ever been here. I am very sorry for it as I was compleatly in rags and was obliged to get a good many blue things here’. He gives the prices of coat ‘Trowzers’ and waistcoat ‘by way of letting you know the price of things here’. He proceeds to respond to information in her letter. He is happy his father ‘has been so successful in the Moors last Season’ and is ‘in hopes of being along with him next Season as I believe we go home for certain next summer. I suppose my Father will turn compleat farmer now well I will do in the peace to drive the plough. We all expected we were going this winter. but I believe we carry the Commander in chief home next summer. He is displeased that his mother ‘mentioned about my not being rated related to Lady Hamilton as in sic I cannot be rated for the first 2 years and even allowing I could be could Capt Duncan with any justice disrate Mid Shipmen some of whom have been twice and thrice my time at Sea to rate me no certainly not nor would I wish it. I wish you would inform Sir Hew and Lady Hamilton of this.’ There follows advice on how to send mail and response to her news on ‘Mrs. Torrence’ ‘Mrs. Quinten’ ‘Dr. Davidson’ ‘Peter Shaw’. He has written to ‘Sir A. Cathcart’ ‘on account of our D expedition and as we are now going on another expedition to Leghorn I think it would be a good opportunity to write him again. I wish you would find out if he has received it or if Lady Hamilton or Lady Blair have.’ He is happy ‘poor old Don is still in the Sandy Cakes’. They have ‘no news up here every thing goes on in the old Stile’. As for his mother’s news that she will be remaining in Daljarrock ‘all winter if my Father does I think he will be sorry especially in bad weather without Society indeed I dont think you would like it much.’ He declares that he is ‘still as fond of my profession as every indeed I dont think I will like to be on shore again in the peace’. He now understands ‘navigation very well’ but has ‘forgot all my Latin. I am convinced there is not one officer in the Ship who understands it and indeed if there was I would not have time’. Regarding the forthcoming expedition he writes that it is ‘fitting out at Salermo against Leghorn’ and is ‘composed of 6000 men under General Ferguson so report says the naval part under Sir Jos Rowley Bart. Vice-Admiral Sir Joshua Ricketts Rowley d.1857 of the America and I believe we belong to it at least I hope so . we sail to-morrow with the Unite’. He ends with remembrance to ‘Mr. & Mrs. Campbell and Misses of Fairfield and Craigie to Mr. & Mrs Hamilton Mr. & Mrs. Crawfurd Mrs. Crawfurd and Miss Margaret Mrs. Gordon Miss Robinson and Misses and to all enquiring friends’. At the start of a five-line postscript he writes: ‘tell my Father I am in hopes of beating him at Billiards well as he plays’. ‘H.M. ‎Admiral Sir Richard Rodney Bligh Royal Navy officer in American War of Independence. Autograph Letter Signed to the Admiralty regarding ‘Her Majesty’s Sloop the Wasp under my Command’.‎

‎‘Wasp Portsmouth 1st. Decr. 1775.’. Bligh’s entry in the Oxford DNB does not note his service on HMS Wasp to which he was appointed in October 1774. According to one authority the ship ‘saw service out of Passage County Cork Ireland from November 1774. In October 1775 Bligh brought sixty volunteers from Ireland into Plymouth and in June 1776 sailed from Portsmouth to Plymouth with money for the dockyard artificers. Towards the end of August the Wasp arrived off the Devonshire port with ten transports bound for North America and she then sailed for Ireland.’ Built in 1749 the 8-gun sloop the Wasp was sold off by the Royal Navy in 1781. In 1784 under the name Mentor she was a slave ship. Good bold signature on letter of 1p 4to. In fair condition on aged and discoloured paper with wear to corners and closed tear along the two postage folds. Addressed to ‘The Honourable The Principal Officers & Commissrs. of His Majesty’s Navy’ parts of last two word chipped away. Docketed ‘1: Decembr. 1775. / Wasp / Captn: Bligh / Book sent’ and ‘Recd. the above Muster Book / TM / 12 Decr. 1775’. The letter reads: ‘Gentlemen / Yesterday I Lodged at the Clerk of the Checks Office at this Port to be forwarded to your Board One Monthly Book for September & October 1775 for His Majesty’s Sloop the Wasp under my Command which please to Acknowledge the receipt off to Waterford in Ireland as I shall sail for that place in a day or two. I am with great respect / Gentlemen / Your most Obedient / Humble Servant R R Bligh’. ‘Wasp, Portsmouth 1st. Decr. 1775.’ unknown‎
