Hydrographic Office under the Authority of the Secretary of the Navy
West Indies Grand and Lesser Caymans
Washington DC: Secretary of the Navy 1933. 20th Ed. July 1933. 31 3/4 x 25 1/4 inches. Very good condition with folds bringing it down to 12 x 13 3/4 inches. Wall map of the Lesser Caymans Grand Caymans and an inset of George Town Anchorage. Original Vintage map printed on heavy paper. The map is stamped with a notice thet it had been corrected with "Notice to Mariners" updating it through Nov. 26 1960. Unconfirmed information given to me when I bought this map many years ogo was that this map was part of a collection of maps used by South Floridians to manage the Bay of Pigs invasion. Regardless of its pedigree it ia a beautiful artifact of the mapmakers art of the islands so prominent in Christopher Columbus sightings on May 10 1503. This is a rarity which is the classic image often reproduced. This is the real item! Not a reproduction!!! Secretary of the Navy unknown

ROYAL NAVY:
VICTORIAN ROYAL NAVY RECRUITMENT BROADSIDE SEEKING 'STOUT HEALTHY BOYS'
London: W. P. Griffith and Sons Ltd. 1888. Printed broadside 34.4 x 20.5cm. Minor contemporary manuscript correction to one of the printed height/chest measurements. There are three neat horizontal filing folds and a minor nick to each end of one of the folds otherwise condition is very good. An uncommon late nineteenth-century naval recruitment broadside boldly titled: "Wanted for the Royal Navy Stout Healthy Boys of Good Character from 15 to 16 1/2 Years of Age". The broadside begins by setting out the various requirements for new recruits such as height and chest measurements as well as the stipulation that they "must be able to read and write must have the written consent of their Parents or Guardians and must sign an engagement to serve for 12 years from the date of attaining the age of 18". It then moves on to outline scales of pay allowances pensions periods of leave and other arrangements for example "boys after 6 months' service can send money home to their parents or guardians at the following rates". At the foot is a list of ships including the names of their captains and ports currently seeking recruits as well as the locations of recruitment offices.

A rather fun piece of naval ephemera which would have surely appealed to many Victorian youths' sense of adventure. [Hawaii: Oahu.] US. Navy. U. S.
Southside of Oahu.

Scarce Chart of Oahu: Pearl Harbor to Diamond Head

This is a wonderfully detailed chart of the Pearl Harbor/Honolulu area. It names Diamond Head Waikiki Honolulu with street grid shown and Pearl Lochs later Pearl Harbor and locates numerous landmarks: school windmill leper asylum prison and several areas with heavy surf and breakers.

The chart appears to be directly derived from a larger separately issued chart of the same title that covered a somewhat larger area Hydrographic Office Chart no. 867. The larger chart was first issued in 1880 and updated at least through 1901. While a very short segment of Oahu R.R. is shown just west of Honolulu on the present chart the much longer stretch of the railway that looped around the northern portion of Pearl Lochs is not shown here as it is on the 1899 edition of the larger map. Since the main portion of the Oahu Railway was completed in late 1889 it suggests that the present map was completed prior to that date. We have been unable to determine the exact publication source of the map. In any case the chart as well as its larger relative is very uncommon; neither version is represented on OCLC.

Condition: Original fold lines. Repair of 1 ½" tear at binding edge.
