This is Volume VIII of Jardine's Naturalist's Library Mammalia. Contents: Vol listing for Naturalist's Library; half title; engraved frontispiece of Peron with tissue guard; vignette title page showing a boat beset by walruses; 2 further title pages; advertisement for the series; contents pages; Memoir of Peron; introduction; text including numerous engravings and 31 plates bound at the rear. The plates are numbered to 30 but there are 2 versions of plate 7. The illustrator's imagination can be seen running riot with the sea monsters pictured on plates 28 and 29. The binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and is clean sound and bright. There is light fading to edges and the bottom corner of the back board has a small bump. Original green endpapers present with repair and some associated marking at the joints. The contents are clean with some spotting and toning to edges. The text pages have clean non-spotty sections and then some with spotting at edges and occasionally spotting overall. Plates have new tissue guards bar plate 23 where the guard is lacking. The plates are clean with light toning to the paper and there is offsetting to the verso of preceding plates. Plate 11 has a small nick to the bottom edge. W H Lizars, S Highley et al hardcover

His first collection of poetry Beyond the Straits published in 1980 is part of the canon of Los Angeles poetry between 1945 and 2000. His poems can be philosophical are often autobiographical include many with themes of Southwestern Pueblos and regularly express his love for his wife. He was a family man fisherman and poet. Silhouette Reverse Portrait on Glass of British captain Henry Whitby
Very Good. Portrait of British captain Henry Whitby whose ship fired a shot which infamously killed an American seaman in 1806. Silhouette reverse portrait on glass 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches to sight captioned "Cpt. Henry Whitby R.N." in image; not examined outside of frame. Np early 19th century. <br/><br/>In the years leading up to the War of 1812 the British Navy made a practice of checking American merchant ships to ascertain whether embargoed French cargo was aboard. In April 1806 off New York the American merchant ship Richard refused to stop when commanded by Captain Henry Whitby's HMS Leander. A warning shot was fired in what proved to be American territorial waters. The shot was poorly aimed and splintered a railing; a shard killed an American sailor named John Pierce. This triggered an international incident with President Jefferson calling for Whitby's arrest. Whitby was cleared in a British court-martial which only increased tensions. We don't know when this portrait of Whitby was created but he was promoted to captain in 1801 and died in 1812. unknown

London : J Johnson 1806 A very good copy of Vol III of this scarce work by William Holloway in full leather binding with contemporary blind stamped boards and newer spine. The British Museum . was issued in 4 volumes and this volume is complete in itself and covers fish and insects. It contains a colour frontispiece and 22 further hand coloured plates of fish and 10 hand coloured plates of insects. It lacks the engraved title page and according to the copy held by Harvard University lacks the plate of a swallow tail. We have not been able to find consistent collations of this work. The binding is in very good clean condition with light wear and scuffing to the boards. There is an armorial bookplate with the name Haughton and the motto 'maigre le fort' to the front pastedown. There is the signature of James Haughton dated 1810 to the title together with a part signature - Heard - dated 1884. Contents: frontispiece title contents list pp vi; fish - text 1-143 with 22 plates; insects pp 145-216 the end with 10 plates. The contents generally clean with well coloured plates. There is occasional light marking - most obvious at pp 39-41. J Johnson hardcover

Cloth morocco backstrip; folio 400x260mm; approx. pp. 100 full of manuscript entries by a single hand with permanent instructions and headings in ink and crew member names and station designations in pencil; numerous additional blanks at rear. Nonetheless a trove of information. Lined paper listing the 614 men aboard assigning each a number gun and location Fore Castle Port Main Top Mizzen Top etc.; listing division and stations; and recording details of every situation that might occur on the ship see examples below. The ship is unnamed but it appears to be a ship of the Line or a Frigate which had 3 masts as well as some minimal amount of steam power. There were 6 African-American members of the crew all of whom were Union Sailors during the Civil War Edward Turner Joseph Davis and Thomas Mills from Maryland; Henry Andres from the West Indies; Joseph Gordan from New York; Samuel R. Whittaker from Buenos Aires. Three of these men served on the USS Minnesota which may help identify the ship. Also includes the ship's Fire Bill crew member stations of Making Sail from Single Anchor Mooring and Unmooring and much more. A rich volume worthy of further study. Cloth torn; front hinge cracked; first few signatures loose. Alittle faint waterstaining and soiling but generally nice and clean. <br/><br/> hardcover
