An unusual group of colour photo transparencies for lighted salesman sample cases or overhead presentations illustrating several configurations of Lockheed U-2R and U-2S spy planes developed by Melpar E-systems in the 1980s and 1990s.

Nine colour photo transparencies sized 8 x 10 in. all mounted on cream-coloured and green matte boards sized 10 x 12 in. many w/ pencil & ink annotations some w/ Melpar ownership label on versos 1 image from a printed colour photo all w/ nice contrast minor edgewear rubbing to matte boards still VG set. These scarce images focus on assorted configurations for the famed Lockheed U-2R spy planes including those later converted into U-2S jets and some appearing in their Superpod configuration while others in the very odd Span Pod configuration in flight and on the tarmac. The aircraft depicted include the 68-10339 U-2 which first flew in Oct. 22 1968 transferred to Davis-Monthan AFB in 1972 and later to Beale AFB before being upgraded and later crashed killing Captain Rich Snyder Dec. 13 1993; the 80-1074 TR-1A U-24 U-2S delivered to Beale AFB in Fe.b 1984 and later converted to U-2S in May 1996; and the 80-1071 U-2R delivered to Beale and converted to U-2S in Oct. 1994. Two of the images show the U-2R in Superpod configuration developed by Melpar including one image of the aircraft flying over the Golden Gate Bridge featuring twin 24-foot-long superpods mounted at midspan each wing capable of carrying 800 lbs. of equipment and three times longer than the instrument pods used during the EP-X trials. Other images show the Span Pod Configuration which consisted of a 30-inch parabolic antenna housed in an unpressurized dorsal radome on the fuselage and two for the control systems trailer. First edition in English of this work examining the preparations and efforts of the Salomon August Andree’s doomed Polar Expedition via balloon in 1897 traveling with Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg. Andree beleived he could steer the hydrogen-filled balloon with a drag line but this proved ineffective and his Polar balloon the Ornen Eagle leaked far more hydrogen than expected and as of the end of this contemporary crashed and disappeared. In 1930 the expedition’s last camp was discovered with documents and photos recording how they’d crashed on a drifting ice pack poor Arctic gear and died on Kvitoya in Svalbard. Back issues were available for only a limited time in 1958 as was the company printed softcover post-binder and additional 4 page introduction present here. First edition of this very scarce original flight manual for the Convair CV-340 which was basically a Super Convair 240 the first private aircraft used in a US Presidential campaign by John F. Kennedy and named Caroline. The CV-340 airliners featured more length greater wing span and power for high-elevation performance and were launched when United Airlines ordered 55 of the aircraft with orders from Braniff Continental Delta Northeast and National Airliners. They earned a reputation for reliability and profitability which allowed them to be developed into the final piston-engined Convairliner the CV-440. The Denver Flight Training Center for United Airlines required pilots to complete simulation training flight training and also included illustrated information on stability flaps instrument controls and more. Airis has included flight log sheets for flights from June 21 1960 through Jan. 27 1961. No copies in Worldcat. This jet fought continual high-speed dogfights over Korea with similar swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 jet fighters and was considered the best fighter aicraft in the war. It experienced an extended production run of over 7800 aircraft through 1956 and was used in Air Forces around the world until 1994. This handbook details the capabilities for the aircraft armed with .50-caliber machine guns carrying bombs rockets or chemical tanks powered by the J47 turbojet engine operating limitations flight characteristics systems operation crew duties and all-weather operations. Many of the American pilots flying the Sabrejets during the Korean War were experienced World War II veterans. However as the war progressed increasing numbers of pilots were being trained at Nellis Air Force Base and the casualty rate for the fighters were quite high. The models featured here include the Piper Cub Super Cruiser a 3-passenger aircraft fitted with 100 horsepower engine and capable of 600 miles flying range; the Piper Cub Special which was the thrifty low-cost model fitted with a 65-horsepower engine and cruising range of 200 miles; and finally the Piper Cub Sea Scout which was a Super Cruiser fitted with pontoons. Revised edition of this beautifully illustrated book on the history of balloon ascensions by the author and his brother Gaston as they were the most renowned balloonists of the Mid-19th-Century. Gaston Tissandier 1843-1899 was a noted chemist meteorologist aviator and editor whose works focused solely on scientific amusements as a way to encourage and promote scientific learning. He founded and edited the scientific magazine La Nature and even managed to escape the 1870 siege of Paris by flying a balloon and in 1883 created the first powered airship by attaching a Siemens electric motor to an airship. Albert Tissandier 1839-1906 was a noted adventurer aviator architect and archaeologist who collaborated with his brother on the magazine La Nature. This spectacular and exceptionally large Soviet-era photo album offers an invaluable visual record of the 25 year history of the central European Zlin/Moravan Aviation Company. This amazing production is beautifully done and all of the photographs are quite crisp. The first 6 leaves illustrated with photos and text detail the history of the company from its formation in 1933 as the Zlin Aviation Company which was commissioned to build gliders by the Masaryk Air League since the major shareholder the Bata Company was not allowed by the Ministry in charge of aircraft production to produce powered aircraft. These early gliders were designed by the Czech aeronautical engineer Kryspin and included the Kluzak Zlin I Vetron Zlin II the Kluzak Zlin III designed by R. Dohnalek and then several designed by F.O. Mayer including the Kluzak - Zlin V VI the very popular Vetron Zlin VII -- Akela which was used throughout Europe as a racing glider and others. Zlin Aviation began producing powered aircraft finally in late 1934 and 1935 with prototypes of the Zlin Z-XII sport and two-seater trainer monoplane. The Z-XII trainer designed by Jaroslav Lonek became the most popular aircraft of its kind in Czechoslovakia and Germany during the 1930s eventually producing over 200 of them powered by Walter Mikron engines illustrated here in the catalogue and later with Persy I and Persy II engines. One of the images included shows the Z-XII at the 1938 races where the plane finished 29th. After World War II the aircraft were used by the Czech Army and as courier planes and were called the K-72 -- replicas of these are being built to this day. Just before the Nazis took over Czechoslovakia in 1938 the company experimented with producing a racing plane called the Letoun Zlin 13 but only 1 was built. After the Germans took over and renamed the company Zlin Aviation Enterprise they built 1 Letoun Zlin-20 which was to be a small two-engine passenger plane but it was quickly superseded by the need to produce the Bu 181 for the Luftwaffe which was the Z-181 Z-281 -- a two seat primary trainer which continued to be built for air forces around the world after World War II. They also produced a variety of gliders for the Luftwaffe and private individuals during the War. After the war the company was nationalized by the Communist Government and became part of the Automotive Enterprise and later renamed Zlinavion. In 1953 it was again renamed Moravan Company and began producing the very successful trainers and aerobatic planes used in aerobatic competition around the world. The Letoun Z-226 Trainer followed by the Z-326 which in this catalogue is still a prototype resulted in numerous different models and over 800 aircraft eventually built by the company and sold around the world. This brochure was written and published before the USAF contract had been awarded for the newly requested penetration jet fighter and bomber escort. The two competitors were the Lockheed XF-90 developed by Willis Hawkins and the Skunk Works team under Kelly Johnson who built two prototypes which was the first USAF jet with an afterburner and the first Lockheed jet to fly supersonic. This controversy has reemerged in the recent years because the editor of Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft chose to support the claim while most including the National Air & Space Museum Curator feel that the evidence is very sparse. In addition there have been recent teams in 1986 and 1998 constructing experimental reproductions of Whitehead 21B at the Experimental Association fly-in and in Germany but these have been disputed as well because they have used some modern materials such as fiberglass and modern engines. Large panoramic photo depicting the March 1911 United States Army maneuvers which featured 20000 troops with early US military aircraft such as the Wright Model B biplane as well as two others by Robert McCormick and Ben Johnson a San Antonio inventor flying above the camp.
San Antonio TX: H. Rudolph Fox Photographer 1911. One large panoramic photo. 48 x 7.5 in. captions scratched into negative at lower margin minor restoration to small portion at the very lower far right fore-edge minor creasing still a VG exemplar. This exceedingly scarce original panoramic photograph features the United States Army maneuvers in March 1911 and was one of the earliest such camps to coordinate with US Army fliers. Within the image the YMCA tent is identified as well as the placement of the field hospital field artillery the Signal Corps as well as the Depot Commissary in the foreground. Above three different biplanes are shown flying maneuvers including the Wright Model B flown by Lt. Benjamin D. Foulois who along with Phil Parmalee flew the first military reconnaissance scouting missions in a fixed-wing aircraft along the US-Mexico border; as well as planes flown by Robert McCormic an early Chicago aviator and inventor who would later construct and house several experimental aircraft at Fort Sam Houston as well as Ben Johnson a San Antonio inventor who flew a Johnson Wright Model B airplane. The Wright Model B was the Wright brothers’ most successful aircraft produced from 1910 to 1914 and they were shipping nearly 4 aircraft a month. Unfortunately the rear elevator made the Model B more tail heavy and prone to stall and within two years faster propeller first aircraft with drag-reducing fuselages began appearing. Fort Sam Houston was a very popular experimental airfield for flying meets air races because it occupied 800 acres and the field was unbroken by no hills of real prominence. Established in 1890 as a post the War Department began expanding the Fort after the Spanish-American War adding Cavalry and Light Artillery from 1905-1912 and also served as the birth of military aviation. Silas Christofferson was with his brother Harry one of the "early birds of aviation" and became known for such feats as flying in 1912 from the top of the Multnomah Building in Portland Oregon to the Vancouver barracks eight miles away. That year both he and the Christofferson Aircraft Mfg. Co. set up shop in San Francisco which is why we date this handbill to around that time. Christofferson died in a plane crash in 1916. First edition of these very rare Piper Aircraft Corp. sales brochures issued after the Piper PA-31-300 had been developed and flown featuring twin 310 horsepower Lycoming T1O-540-A turbocharged engines in “tiger shark†cowlings as in the Twin Comanche. These catalogues with preliminary information and specifications on the newly developed plane were issued to customers about 3 months before FAA certification and first deliveries did not take place until 1967. These small planes were targeted at cargo and feeder liner operations and the corporate market and proved popular until production ceased in 1984. No copies located in Worldcat. Original tan softcover split-pin binder sewn at gutter margin w/ cotton twine occasional creasing to covers minor shelfwear some images w/ minor folds or creases especially those at gutter margins still a VG exemplar. This fascinating photographic proof book provides historic images of the first transcontinental private “Air Tour†following World War II and the lifting of aviation restrictions at the end of the War. With 1000s of returning fliers from the United States armed forces with flying experience Americans began taking to the skies in record numbers. Participants were able upon their return later to Portland OR go to the photographer’s studio and pick out which images they would like to purchase and add to their own souvenir books. On May 21 1949 the Portland Oregon Chamber of Commerce had organized an air tour which was similar to those which had heavily promoted civil aviation in the 1920s and 1930s from Portland OR across the continent to Portland Maine. Fifty-five aircraft plus a US Air Force C-47 assembled at Troutdale Airport and took off surrounded by the Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee. Ackroyd 1913-2012 noted aviation commercial photographer and aerial aficionado was contracted along with KGW Radio’s director of public events Bob Tomlinson and Earl Peterson technical supervisor to document the historic tour. These images show the 55 planes parked across the tarmac participants eating and loading their planes appearances by representatives from the 1949 Pendleton Round-Up including cowboys and Native Americans in native dress and the decidedly cramped quarters inside a few of the larger aircraft. Peterson and Tomlinson are shown setting up their equipment and broadcasting campy skits featuring the Grants Pass air club members in cave man costumes “kidnapping†and carrying off female members others in pirate costumes along with a tour of a B-29 superfortress. There are photos of aircraft taking off and landing at airports in Salt Lake City UT Cheyenne WY Wichita KS Indianapolis IN Akron OH Lock-Haven PA including the Portland Rose Festival plane float planes with all finally reaching Portland ME on May 28 1949. Upon arrival there was a huge lobster feast party featuring a map decorated cake and the fliers were met by Portland ME officials and Governor Frederick G. Payne. Ackroyd shows the welcome banners airport and the planting of gift roses in front of the Portland ME sign. Of particular interest are the series of aerial photos over Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City in 1949. Ackroyd was a Canadian photographer who began shooting photos at the age of 16 in British Columbia moved to Hollywood where he shot celebrity portraits but eventually moved to Portland OR before World War II and began shooting pictures of ships and barges for Gunderson Inc. and Shaver Transportation Co. He was adept at aerial photography and was well known for his images of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge from the air. An uncommon archive of photographs and aircraft manuals from the now-abandoned Bethany Airport which was one of the earliest private airports in New England. Originally organized on land purchased by Harris Whittemore Jr. of Naugatuck in 1922 recognizing the commercial potential with an airport situated near Hartford CT. Of historic note and interest is the large photo of the Cairns Aircraft X-329V which was a sleek mono-wing design built entirely of metal in Naugatuck CT originally powered with 90 horsepower motor and changed out according to the ALS on the verso with a 165 horsepower 5-Cylinder Wright J-6 Engine. On March 2 1932 Elliot McCune an experienced pilot took the plane up for an exhibition flight and the wing separated less than 500 feet from the ground and was killed when the chute had little time to open and the plane was destroyed. Edmond Burke Cairns b. 1883 notes in January 1966 after the closure of the Bethany Airport that this was “the only photo I have of the first plane we built in Naugatuck.†The other photos collected by the former airport owner as well as amateur pilots and aviation enthusiasts Markey & Highbridge include images of Major William Gerson Ladd b. 1896 commander of the 118th Observation Squadron 43rd Division Aviation and the Connecticut National Guard Air Service in Hartford; photo of Lt. Mather with the 118th Observation Squadron; an historic image of Huestis “Hugh†Wells delivering the first airmail for Colonial Air Transport of Naugatuck CT July 1 1925 along the route from Boston to New York by way of Hartford; along with an aerial photo of Hartford taken by the 118th Photo Section. Also preserved in the collection are a signed photo of Torrey H. Webb who on May 15 1918 was the first air carrier of airmail leaving Belmont Park NY with 2457 pieces of airmail delivery together with TLS from Texaco to James E. Markey mentioning the inclusion of the 1943 Texaco Start with story of the event. There are also images of a Cessna Model 170B built in 1952 a 1930 Monocoupe 90A fitted later with a Lycoming O-320 engine a Grumman single engine Model G-164 a Stinson Reliant the Wedell-Williams Racer #44 and many others. Addressed to Highbridge are the promotional literature partial blueprints and pricing with photos for the Falconar AMF-S14 Maranda a 2-seat light kit aircraft based on the Adam RA-14 Loisir a Lycoming O-320 engine and folding wings so it could be towed behind a car; another brochure for the Mignet HM290 “Airport†also known as the Flying Flea and photos showing the construction of the kit planes. The original inspection and operations manuals are quite scarce and those included in this grouping encompass the manual for the 1934 SR-5 Stinson Reliant built with a 41-foot wingspan with 145 produced the SR-7 Reliant which had a wing of 41 feet as well but it was the first taper-wing gull-wing Reliant and subsequently the plane earned the nickname of Stinson “Gullwing.†The 1940 Stinson Voyager Model 105 developed after Consolidated Vultee purchased the company was a 3-passenger aircraft and very successful with such notable owners as James Stewart and Howard Hughes snapping up theirs in the first Voyagers produced. During World War II the L-5 Sentinel version became the U.S. Army’s most used and least recognized aircraft serving as artillery spotter medical evacuation aerial reconnaissance and passenger transport. The parts catalogue included here for the 1946-47 provides invaluable historical reference for the very popular Flying Station Wagon or the Stinson 108 resulting in nearly 5000 produced and after being sold to Piper in 1949 the remainder were sold as Piper-Stinson aircraft for years. The very rare parts list and diagrams detailing the Luscombe Aircraft produced in Dallas TX shows the upgrades to the aircraft with an all metal wing two 12.5 gallon wing tanks and rear windows increasing visibility. First edition thus of this exceedingly scarce flight manual for the popular L-1049H Super Constellation from Lockheed affectionately referred to as the “Super Connie†or “Super H†and “Husky†was the competitor airliner to the popular DC-6 and popular with Quantas Airlines Northwest Orient Flying Tiger Lines and as in the case for this manual Resort Airlines Inc. The L-1049H entered service in Nov. 1956 and mated a C-121C fuselage with a L-1049G providing a convertible passenger/freight aircraft whose cargo hold had a volume of 565 cubic feet and could carry up to 120 people with seats luggage lockers and bathroom facilities. The Super Constellations were popular aricraft and favorted by many Latin American airlines continuing in service until 1966 when the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 basically rendered them obsolete. A total of 56 were built in various configurations and as with most flight manuals these were ever-changing with sections added revised and/or removed by the airline as specifications changed. In this case Resort Airlines Inc. which operated out of Oakland CA from 1949-1961 has added several sections with mimeographed updates to the Lockheed installments including Emergency Procedures Landing Instructions Runway Analysis and Spare Parts Kit. Of particular interest are the Runway Analysis for such airports as Atsugi Agana Guam Honolulu Int. Hawaii McChord AFB Manila P.I. Oakland Int. California Wake Island and others. The Lodestar was developed to compete with the popular Douglas DC-3 but even with its’ greater capabilities in cruising speed range and altitude performance allowing it to easily cross the Rocky Mountains it was not until the Lodestar 18 was enhanced with 5 additional feet and 18 seats which made it profitable. It first entered service with Mid-Continent Airlines and Continental in the United States along with one for United Airlines and several overseas customers. In 1942 most of the domestic models were seized for the war effort and were converted into the very popular and C-46 and later C-60 Lodestars which proved indispensable during World War II. March 12 1940 the Norwegian government had contracted with Northrop to build 24 seagoing patrol bombers and he was able to design and build the prototype in less than eight months unfortunately test flying Nov. 1 1940 at Lake Elsinore CA 6 1/2 months after the Nazi German invasion and occupation of Norway by the end of June 1940. These exceptional images show the prototype N-3PB the flexible machine gun in the rear cockpit flight operations in Iceland and Wolford’s photos of test flights on Lake Elsinore. The first album’s photos include a list of plate captions detailing the photo showing Nos. 321 324 320 the restored plane and 315 in flight; N3PB’s packed on the beach; ground crew handling an N-3PB at the dock in Fossvogur and more. Although never delivered to Norway Norwegian pilots in the 330 Squadron flew out of Iceland controlled by Britain at the time and flew missions and fought against German Focke-Wulf FW 200 long range reconnaissance bombers and Blohm & Voss BV 138 Flying Boats. The remainder of both albums focus on the discovery recovery and restoration of No. 320 GS-U an N-3PB from 330 Squadron’s satellite base at Budareiry which was caught in a heavy snow shower and forced down in 1943. Discovered and then salvaged in 1979 through the efforts of a team of Icelandic Norwegian British and American volunteers led by Ragnar J. Ragnarsson vice president of the Icelandic Aviation Historical Society. These images show the lifting of the plane the restoration after its return to Northrop’s Hawthorne Factory where over 300 volunteers of the Western Museum of Flight’s staff and former Northrop employees rebuilt it to its 1943 appearance and rolled it out Nov. 10 1980. Many of the images included here augment those mounted within the souvenir albums showing more stages and some include black & white as well as colour images. The floatplane was displayed in Reykjavik at its’ former Icelandic home base and finally installed at the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum at Gardermoen Airport. It was believed to be the only known survivor until 2003 when another was discovered in the waters off Reykjavik and may eventually be recovered. Roy Wolford 1915-2013 began as an aircraft mechanic and followed Northrop when he set up his corporation becoming the company’s official photographer and head of the photography department. Although unsigned many of these images are attributed to Wolford.
