THE BATTLE OF THE AIRFIELDS 1ST JANUARY 1945.
Grub Street London 1994 revised updated Anniversary edition including new German material. 224 pp large 8vo hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED ON TITLE PAGE BY AUTHOR. B&w photos. "At first light on the morning of Ist January 1945 over 800 Luftwaffe fighters took off from their bases in Germany to attack Allied airfields in Holland Belgium and France. Some of these surprise attacks proved successful some were hardly noticed while others were disastrous for the attackers. Basing his account on information from both Wing and Squadron diaries and with many first-hand account s from the men who were there Norman Franks paints a definitive picture of that winter morning and the rest of the day. In these attacks and in the air battles which were fought at low level across the open countrysides and over towns in t h e L o w Countries the Luftwaffe lost up to 300 of their fighter aircraft and over 200 pilots were killed or taken prisoner. The Allied air forces lost some 200 aircraft with little loss of life and were able to replace their losses within d ay s w h er ea s t he Luftwaffe had greater difficulty in finding new pilots. Operation Bodenplatte was planned as a lightening blow to smash the British and American forces in north-west Europe. In fact it turned out to be the Luftwaffe's fin al ac t o f s el f-d est ru ct ion." Tiny scuff to bottom of front board. Dust jacket has minor rubbing. This is a new unread book. London: Grub Street 1995. 218 pp large 8vo 9 1/2"H. B&w maps photos. "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war Neville Duke found himself aged 19 as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade lessons that were to prove invaluable when in November he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign was a warded the DSO then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre."
