Wings Flying Thrills
London: John Hamilton Limited. Very Good. N.D. Hardcover. Green cloth covered hardback with black lettering to spine. Some shelf wear in accordance with age but generally very good. No inscriptions. These are rare issues of a quarterly journal all bound together. In the opening section no dates are shown but probably circa summer 1934. Experts will be aware of the issue dates here is an example taken from the first list of Contents in the book All's Fair Captain W E Johns a modern story p5; Time on the Board Arch. Whitehouse A Ward Story p.13; Flying Section 17 Haupt Heydemarck Translated from the German by Claud W Sykes Captain Heydemarck. German Ace tells of his experiences in command of German Flying Section 17 during the war p 29; The World on the Wing. Captain W E Johns How the aeroplane conquered space p.90; From an Observer's Log. Major James McCudden V. C. The experiences of this well-known British pilot while acting as an observer in the early days of his career p 95; Dog-Fight Danny Arch. Whitehouse A War Story p.102; OLd Soldiers Never Die. Captain W E Johns A modern flying story p 116; Spy Flying "Vigilant" "pseud. For Claude W. Sykes Author of German War Birds. A most interesting article on this fascinating subject. P 120. 1-128 pages. This is followed by a second issue that has a clear title page and the contents stating Vol. 1 No. 2 Autumn 1934 full contents with articles by W E Johns etc 1-128 pages. After this comes Vol. 1 Number 3 Winter 1935 1-1238 pages again with full contents including another article by W E Johns followed by Vol.1 No.4 Spring 1935 1-112 pages. The contents is generally very good even though the pages are foxed and brown . Probably owing to the type of paper used the text is set-out in two columns Each issue has several fascinating stories and articles every issue contains work by W E Johns there are illustrations throughout in black and white. A feast of material for aviation enthusiasts. Very good tight binding text fully readable. Something to be enjoyed. Heavy book. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall . John Hamilton Limited hardcover

No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Clean square tight and unmarked. Sharp corners. Pages are fresh and crisp. Illustrated with maps and photos. Chapter notes. Bibliography. Index. First printing with complete number row 54321 on the copyright page. From the Dust Jacket: "At the start of the twentieth century the United States led the world in advances in aviation with the first successful engine-powered flights at Kitty Hawk North Carolina and Dayton Ohio beginning in 1903. Fifteen years later however American airmen flew European-designed aircraft because American planes were woefully inadequate for service on the Western Front. Why was the United States so poorly prepared to engage in aerial combat in World War I To answer this question Herbert Johnson takes a look at the early years of U.S. military aviation exploring the cultural technical political and organizational factors that stunted its evolution. Among the themes he traces are a chronic lack of government funding for military aeronautics intraservice conflict over control of the aviation program and the disruptive influence of a civilian 'aeronaut constituency' both on military discipline and on Congressional and public attitudes toward army aviation. Public misunderstanding was further fueled by the army's vacillation between lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air weapon systems Johnson says and public opinion was repelled by high-risk exhibition flying and revelations of negligence and favoritism in the Signal Corps's management of the aviation program. On the technical side the Wright brothers' patent litigation hindered the development of American aircraft and crippled the domestic aviation industry's manufacturing capacity. The United States then entered World War I with obsolete aircraft." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hard Cover. Publisher's brown cloth/Jacket not priced or clipped. 8vo. xvi 298pp. The University of North Carolina Press Hardcover
