FUN HELPED THEM FIGHT
Washington D. C.: National Geographic Society. Very Good. 1948. Magazine. Color Photographs; This is a DISBOUND article from National Geographic Magazine. This is the actual article not a photocopy. The article is in Very Good condition. Text pages are clean bright and without chips tears discoloration or wear. They do however have the necessary staple holes where staples were removed. The article consists of five double-sided pages of text with accompanying photographs there are twelve color photographs. The article is about the artwork found on the airplanes flown during World War II along with some information about the naming of the planes used. The photographs included are quite clear and show some of the more intriguing pictures the pilot & crew artists drew on their planes. There is actually very little text as the article is mostly a fluff piece used to remind readers about the war but in our time the look at the artwork and a gander at some of the names used on the planes gives a real perspective to the war and the times. Pictures are of planes named : Nine O Nine The Goon Ave Maria Idiot's Delight Accentuate the Positive The Great Artiste Balls o' Fire Sweet and Lovely Hookem Cow MissBehave Picture Packing Mama and New York Central II. The Great Artiste was the plane A B-29 Superfortress which dropped an Atomic Bomb on Nagasaki. The photographs all seem to be from the U. S. Army Air Force. . National Geographic Society unknown

Wreaking Havoc : A Year in an A-20
Texas A&M University Press USA 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. Hardcover. 258 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Texas A&M University Press USA 2003. First Edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in near fine condition and comes in fine dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. . Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: "Life" writes Joseph W. Rutter "was all fun and games with very expensive toys during those bright June days in 1944." Rutter was a pilot in the Army Air Force and the expensive toys were airplanes--A-20 nicknamed "the Havoc" for the damage they inflicted. He had just completed replacement crew training at Charlotte North Carolina. Shortly thereafter he was flying with the 312th Bomb Group from Hollanida New Guinea over Japanese targets and across "unexplored" areas and life became more serious. "Wreaking Havoc tells the story of Rutter and his friends at a time when the horrors of war were matched by the energy and enthusiasm of youth. In innocent and understated tones Rutter relates hijinks and daredevilry his training stateside his first mission large-scale raids on the Philippines and Formosa routine low-level attacks on Japanese positions crashes mishaps and the deaths of friends. With a wonderful eye for detail Rutter gives the reader a glimpse into not only the air war in the Pacific but also the culture of the 1940s and the minds of the young men who found themselves far from home on the front lines. In Rutter's story of war the A-20 is as much a protagonist as the author. If the aircraft emerges as a pilot's plane--a joy to fly--it could also be a temperamental machine whose landing gear might collapse whose hydraulic system might fail and whose controls might suddenly malfunction. Rutter and the men who crewed the planes are quiet heroes whose approach to war combines the nonchalance of youth and the seriousness of men who have come close enough to death to take life seriously. From the pages of his memoir Rutter speaks to those interested in aviationWorld War II and the coming of age of a young man. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; ISBN: 1585442895.
