‎Récit du raid Paris-Bagdad-Calcutta-Hanoï-Tokyo. Parti le 24 avril 1924 avec le mécanicien Besin, le capitaine aviateur Georges Pelletier Doisy (1892-1953) arrive le 9 juin après avoir changé de moteur à Hanoï et d'avion à Shanghaï. Pelletier-Doisy s’envole de Villacoublay sur un Bréguet 19, baptisé du prénom de sa fille "Jacqueline". Il lui faut 120 heures de vol effectif (moyenne 168 km/h) pour rallier Tōkyō. Il se pose le 9 juin à midi sur le terrain de Tokorosawa près de la capitale japonaise, où il est accueilli par une foule considérable, par Paul Claudel, ambassadeur de France, et par un pilote japonais, le baron Kiyotake Shigeno, qui avait participé au premier conflit mondial au sein de l’escadrille des Cigognes... Les exploits successifs de Pelletier Doisy (il fut le premier à faire le tour de France en avion...) le firent surnommer "Pivolo". Un récit palpitant agrémenté de nombreuses photographies, de cartes et des documents officiels qui permirent cette expédition inouïe à l'époque.‎

Richard Gimbel born in 1898 was the son of one of the founders of the Gimbel Department store chain. He graduated from Yale University and served as vice president of the Gimbel Corporation. It is a diary of losses and a chronicle in which the fighter pilots plays the lead. It tells of the young men who joined their squadrons full of optimisim and derring-do only to give their lives to no purpose in a last desperate endeavour. The focal point of this book is the controversial Operation 'Bodenplatte' on the morning of New Year's Day 1945 an operation in which the German fighter force received its final mortal wound - losing some 230 aircrew in less than four hours the fighter units suffered their most severe defeat. Only now after years of evaluation of all available sources can the true figures of fighter losses on January 1 1945 be reported. But this picture of the sacrifice of fighter formations does not mean that fighter pilots were unable to score successes. ‎L’unité aéronautique N 124 ou escadrille La Fayette a été créée le 20 avril 1916, soit un an avant l’entrée en guerre des Etats-Unis. Elle regroupait de jeunes pilotes américains volontaires, engagés pour la plupart dans la Légion étrangère ou comme ambulanciers. Placée sous le commandement du capitaine Georges Thénault, l’escadrille combat et se distingue sur le front du Nord-Est français. Elle cesse d’exister sous sa forme originale le 18 février 1918, pour devenir la N 103, la première escadrille de chasse américaine. – L'auteur, ayant appartenu à cette unité de 1936 à 1945, apporte un témoignage complet, vibrant, vivant et parfois bouleversant en livrant ses souvenirs de combattant, en évoquant ses camarades, en traduisant la richesse des souvenirs contenus dans les archives du groupe, mises à sa disposition.
