‎Dick Grace (Richard Virgil Grace) (1898-1965) est né à Morris, Minnesota et était un des premiers pilote de voltige à se spécialiser dans les crashs d'avions pour le cinéma (« stunt-men »), c'est-à-dire les figurants audacieux qui exécutent, devant l'appareil de prises de vues, les acrobaties les plus périlleuses. On peut le voir notamment dans les films “Sky Bride”, “The Lost Squadron”, “Wings” (“Les Ailes”, 1927) et “Lilac Time” (1928). Il a servi dans l'Armée de l'air des Etats-Unis pendant les deux guerres mondiales, comme copilote de bombardier B17 au-dessus de l'Allemagne au sein du 486th Bombardment Group pendant la Seconde. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages, dont L'Escadrille de la Mort (1931) (“Squadron of Death”, 1929), “Crash Pilot”, “I am still alive”, et “Visibility Unlimited”. Grace fut l'un des rares pilote cascadeur à Hollywood qui soit mort de vieillesse. — "Colonel de l'Armée de l'Air, combattant 14-18 et 39-45, Dick Grace a eu des aventures plus inattendues et intéressantes que les récits de guerre. Pionnier de l'aviation, baladin du ciel de meetings, il se mesura avec les éléments sans mécano ni radio. Le centre d'intérêt du livre concerne les métiers successifs de Dick Grace à Hollywood : accessoiriste, acrobate, dompteur, spécialiste des accidents sur mesures pour les films à sensations. Nous le voyons satisfaire au mépris de sa vie et avec le plus grand sang-froid aux exigences des scénarios, non sans y récolter parfois de graves blessures. Tom Mix et des réalisateurs célèbres évoluent autour de lui. En dépit du ton général d'humour, il arrive que l'on frémisse en le lisant ; mais l'émotion ne nous est jamais donnée par des effets qui sentent le chiqué et la mise en scène. This book is in Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some edge wear rubbing and bumping. The covers of the book have big patches of fading waterspotting and the spine joints have ground-in dirt. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. Both the front and rear spine hinges have beginning cracking. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown page. "Grahame-White's interest in aviation was sparked by Louis Bl�riot's crossing of the English Channel in 1909. This prompted him to go to France where he attended the Reims aviation meeting at which he met Bl�riot and subsequently enrolled at his flying school. Grahame-White was one of the first people to qualify as pilot in England becoming the holder of Royal Aero Club certificate No. 6 awarded in April 1910. He became a celebrity in England in April 1910 when he competed with the French pilot Louis Paulhan for the �10000 prize offered by the Daily Mail newspaper for the first flight between London and Manchester in under 24 hours. Although Paulhan won the prize Grahame White's achievement was widely praised."
