From the ashes of a shattered nation in 1918the German Air Force rose again. The climax of the campaign in the West in 1940 - when the Luftwaffe was to play a vital role - can now be seen as the zenith of its fortunes and strengths. But the victories won during 1939-40 were as nothing to those won over the previous twenty years as Germany overcame the restrictions that had been imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. This bookthe product of much new research in military archives in GermanyFrance and Britaintells the story of how Germany came to develop the Luftwaffe. Here are the secret years of German aviation up to 1935when even the German government was misled as to the existence of training programmeswhile barely any effort was made to meet the Armistice demands. . . Edward Hooton demonstrates just how well informed Allied intelligence agencies were of Luftwaffe developmentbut of the failure to use that intelligence correctly; how the Luftwaffe's training organization failed to improve upon the flawed system of World War One; and of the existence of a genuine strategic role for the Luftwaffe and plans to fulfil it. Other facts that emerge from this study are the extent to which later Luftwaffe strength and quality relied on a few far-sighted individuals in its early days; the contribution of Milchin organizing the aircraft industry; of Weverin shaping operational doctrines and concepts until an untimely death; and of Blombergin allowing the Luftwaffe to exist as an autonomous organization. The story of the Luftwaffe from creation to victorious justification in war is vividly told here for the first time in detail and in one volume. It is a fascinating insight into a unique period of military aviationas tactics and technology raced each other set against a background of rearmament and resurgent German militarism in the years before and during the initial campaigns of WW2.</p> LONDON.BROCKHAMPTON PRESS,1999. hardcover

All other pages are clean and unmarked. Laid-in is a laminated $10000 bill dated 1863. It states "This note is legal tender for ten thousand dollars." No extra charge. Use as a bookmark Well illustrated with map and photographs. Glossary. Chronology. List of chapter notes. Bibliography. Index. From the rear cover: "From time to time in the body of scholarly writing there emerges a work of commanding importance. Sometimes this paper will do more than satisfy a committee; sometimes it will go beyond a noble contribution to the sum of our knowledge and will also entertain the reader. Occasionally it will be couched in plain easy-to-understand journalism designed to captivate a person with a sense of being there. CITY OF FLIGHT is all of this. James J. Horgan transports his reader into history; into the basket of the Atlantic as the 19th century balloon crashes into the timber of upstate New York a thousand miles after its takeoff from St. Louis. Into the Red Devil as Thomas Scott Baldwin flies his flimsy biplane between the Mississippi River and the arches of Eads Bridge. Onto the struts of the Sky Cycle as a 15 year-old boy pedals his little gas-filled dirigible over Forest Park. Onto Art Hill to cheer the flyover of America's newest hero Charles A. Lindbergh in his Spirit of St. Louis in salute to the city which made it all possible. This is an epic set in the very cradle of aviation history -- the City of St. Louis -- now as it was in the beginning the City of Flight.". Second Edition. Softcover. Very Good condition.
