His son John who has edited his memoirs makes clear that Sir Ronald was a typical Edwardian English Gentleman. This he explains is vital to the understanding of the man. The moral precepts of the Edwardian era remained with Sir Ronald throughout his life and if some of them seem stiff and outdated in these more relaxed days they certainly sustained him throughout a long and adventurous career. The book not only covers the most vital years in the development of the RAF in which Sir Ronald played a significant part but is also packed with drama at high level. Not many Englishmen let alone future Air Marshals were ever under sentence of death at the orders of Sir Winston Churchill himself. Sir Ronald has been well served by his editor. His son is never blinded by filial respect and as he served in the Royal Air Force himself he is familiar with the Service background. He is also qualified to explain what it was that made his father and the military men of that generation a unique band of Happy Warriors whose loyalty and service to the British Crown is already a fading memory."
