First printing with complete number row 54321 on the copyright page. From the Dust Jacket: "At the start of the twentieth century the United States led the world in advances in aviation with the first successful engine-powered flights at Kitty Hawk North Carolina and Dayton Ohio beginning in 1903. Fifteen years later however American airmen flew European-designed aircraft because American planes were woefully inadequate for service on the Western Front. Why was the United States so poorly prepared to engage in aerial combat in World War I To answer this question Herbert Johnson takes a look at the early years of U.S. military aviation exploring the cultural technical political and organizational factors that stunted its evolution. Among the themes he traces are a chronic lack of government funding for military aeronautics intraservice conflict over control of the aviation program and the disruptive influence of a civilian 'aeronaut constituency' both on military discipline and on Congressional and public attitudes toward army aviation. Public misunderstanding was further fueled by the army's vacillation between lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air weapon systems Johnson says and public opinion was repelled by high-risk exhibition flying and revelations of negligence and favoritism in the Signal Corps's management of the aviation program. On the technical side the Wright brothers' patent litigation hindered the development of American aircraft and crippled the domestic aviation industry's manufacturing capacity. The United States then entered World War I with obsolete aircraft." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hard Cover. Publisher's brown cloth/Jacket not priced or clipped. 8vo. xvi 298pp. The University of North Carolina Press Hardcover

FLYING SQUADRONS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE U.S. ARMY AIR FORCES.
New York: Duell Sloan and Pearce 1942. 234 pp 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Combines rare and startling pictures with a thoroughly authoritative text to tell the story of the 'Flying Squadrons'. Johnston points out how from the very earliest flights of man people foresaw the military possibilities of aviation: Franklin in his letters after he watched the Montgolfier ascensions; Napoleon in his Egyptian campaign; the Danes during the Swedish conflict of 1830. Briefly but penetratingly he tells the story of the early twentieth-century experiments and of what happened to aviation in the first World War. He shows what position of our air power was in 1919 and how that position changed in the Twenties and Thirties: experimentation discouragement retrogression new ideas organization the attitude of the army leaders of government leaders of industry. Finally he presents the whole picture of our Army Air Force as it was constituted on December 7th 1941. He describes all types of airplanes that have been developed - the interceptor and convoying pursuit plane the light medium and heavy bomber the transports the reconnaissance liaison trainer planes. He then tells of the make-up of Army Air Force personnel and of the training courses. He gives data on the size of our Air Force on the programs mapped out on lessons learned from the Nazis and from the British and how these lessons are being applied. Finally he presents the all-over strategy of our military aviation explaining where it is weak what it must plan for how it can be the keystone of victory." Airlife Shrewsbury 1993. 168 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. ".the autobiography of one of the Royal Air Force's most colourful characters. Sandy Johnstone began flying in the Auxiliary Air Force and later flew as a commercial pilot until he was called up for Active Service in 1939. He took command of a Spitfire squadron in July 1940 and was credited with eight confirmed 'kills' and four probables during the Battle of Britain. He later led a Wing of Spitfires during the Siege of Malta 1942/3. In 1944 he was involved in the planning of Operation Overlord and subsequent operations of the fighter squadrons engaged in D-Day operations joining General Eisenhower's staff in Normandy five weeks later. Sandy Johnstone's post-war career was equally varied and in his book he recalls his experience as an Air Attache founder of the Royal Malayan Air Force Commander of the Commonwealth Air Forces when he saw action in Borneo and as Air Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland during which time he also held a number of important N.A.T.O. commands." Johnstone Sandy Air Vice Marshal. Alexander
ENEMY IN THE SKY: MY 1940 DIARY.
San Rafael California: Presidio 1979. 191 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "In 1940 Great Britain faced one of the most critical periods in its history when Germany launched its air power across the English Channel. For a few nightmarish weeks the fate of the nation lay in the hands of its fighter pilots 'Churchill's Few'. During those pivotal days Sandy Johnstone commanded the 602nd City of Glasgow Squadron stationed at Westhampnett. He kept a detailed diary of the squadron's activities. Flying their Spitfires the pilots of the 602nd pitted themselves against the German threat fighting for control of the airspace over their homeland. Johnstone himself was credited with eight kills and four probables. Eventually the Battle of Britain was won.
