Wings over the Wilderness They Flew the Trail of '42
Surrey BC: Hancock House Publishers. Very Good. 2008. First Edition. Softcover. 0888395957 . Card covers show some shelf wear with creasing. ; A bright solid book.; B&W and Colour photographs; 10.9 X 8.4 X 0.7 inches; 296 pages; "Both Britain and the United States responded to Germany's attack on Russia with the immediate shipment of a small quantity of combat aircraft while pledging to send a steady stream of 400 aircraft per month. Delivery of tactical aircraft to the Soviet battlefield presented significant logistical and technical challenges due to the great distances involved exposure to hostile forces and damage to delicate aircraft components inflicted while in transit. Spanning the breadth of Siberia there existed only a scattering of primitive airfields and on the North American side the situation was only marginally better. To accommodate aircraft ferrying on the scale envisioned additional airfields would have to be created others upgraded hangars and housing built navigational aids installed massive quantities of fuel delivered and scarce manpower diverted for the purpose. Wings Over the Wilderness tells the story of the secret WWII airway that arched across 8000 miles of sub-Arctic wilderness and over Siberia to reach an ally in need. The book pays tribute to the thousands of men and women who toiled under the most difficult of circumstances to help decide the outcome of World War Two. Primitive facilities harsh climate and wild terrain were among the difficulties faced by American and Russian pilots in the transfer of nearly 8000 warplanes from American factories to the Russian battlefield. The airway was cruel on man and machine as the grave markers and twisted wrecks of fallen warplanes littering forest and muskeg bear testament. Smith's writings offer first-hand veteran accounts and fascinating stories surrounding the delivery of the warplanes to Russia. The book includes an extensive introduction by the author that offers the reader the historical and geo-political background at the time of the writing. Accompanying the detailed text are hundreds of never-before-published photographs. Also included in the book are extensive endnotes a glossary of terms and abbreviations a bibliography and index." . Smith, Charles Kingsford "Smithy" (1897-1935). Australian aviator who made the first trans-Pacific flight from the United States
A vintage magazine photographic portrait of the AUSTRALIAN AVIATOR CHARLES KINGSFORD SMITH who made the first Trans-Pacific flight from the United States to Australia.
Argentina: El Grafico 1928. 1928. Good. - A 12-1/8 inch high by 8-3/4 inch wide leaf from the Argentinian sports magazine "El Grafico" with a full-page illustration of the Australian aviator Charles Kingsford Smith portrayed in three-quarter profile from the chest up. Attired in a wool fleece-collared heavy coat "Smithy" gazes upward as he reaches for a cigarette between his lips. The corners are slightly creased and there are stab-marks along the page's right edge and a short tear to the bottom edge. A color illustration of the equestrian "Victor Fernandez Bazan" riding his horse as he jumps an obstacle is pictured on the verso. Good.
Nicknamed "Smithy" the early Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith 1897-1935 made the first Trans-Pacific flight from the United States to Australia. Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm purchased a Fokker monoplane "The Southern Cross" from the polar explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins and set off with a 4 man crew from Oakland on May 31 1928. Stopping over at Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii they then completed the journey to Brisbane Australia. Kingsford Smith was also the first aviator to fly non-stop across the Australian mainland and also the first to fly between Australia and New Zealand. He repeated his Trans-Pacific feat this time flying from Australia to the U.S. and subsequently set a new time record flying from Australia to London. In 1935 he and his co-pilot John Thompson Pethybridge disappeared over the sea as they fought a storm while trying to set a new overnight speed record in flying from Allahabad India to Singapore.
Founded by Constancio Vigil in 1919 "El Grafico" was an Argentine sports magazine which started as a weekly newspaper before subsequently turning exclusively to the coverage of sports. One of the most highly regarded sports magazines in Latin America it came to earn the nickname "La Biblia de deporte" "The Bible of sports". Argentina: El Grafico, [1928]. unknown
