World War II: Aviation
U.S. NAVY PRIMARY FLIGHT TRAINING MANUAL
Glenview IL: Naval Air Training Command 1945. First Edition. Wraps. Good . 4to. Illustrated wraps. Contemporary post binding added at left margin. Most paper lost from spine. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound.

An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. OCLC notes only 2 institutional holdings one at The Smithsonian the other in the aviation archives at Wright State in Dayton OH. None in commerce June 2015. 243pp. Naval Air Training Command paperback books

1918 Classroom Notebook of a Cadet at the United States Army School of Aeronautics at Ohio State University
Columbus OH: np 1918. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 4to. Cloth hardcover three ring binder. Holding 151 leaves; 110 holograph 41 typed. Many sheets loose from ring binding. Cloth torn at spine. Overall contents well preserved.

The classroom lecture notebook of an unnamed cadet at The United States Army School of Aeronautics at Ohio State University Columbus OH covering January through March 1918. During WWI a pilot shortage in the United States became apparent. In response the War Department and U.S. Army formed the Aviation Cadet Training Program installing aviation training schools at six universities across the country. This program at Ohio State appears to have consisted of 8 weeks of classes with training in military drill discipline and technical instruction with an emphasis on aviation. Curriculum from the program formed the basis for the aeronautical engineering courses later taught at OSU. A scarce set of materials from an early instructional program of military aviation training and education one that would eventually become the US Air Force. np hardcover books

New York 1942. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. Old folds lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature otherwise a fine letter with a bold clear signature. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century.

Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."

Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. Wright Brothers, Aviation
1923 Archive Recording an Aviation World Speed Record Overseen by Orville Wright
Archive of documenting a new flight speed records directed by aviation pioneer Orville Wright. Very scarce archive of 14 total pages. Documents are in English and French. Comes with two photographs further documenting the event photos black and white measuring 4.5" x 3.75" and 6.5" x 4.5" inches. One document addressed to the National Aeronautic Association reports of speed records set at 500 and 1000 kilometers at McCook Field and Wilbur Wright Field in Dayton Ohio on March 29th 1923. Aviation pioneer Orville Wright was the directing official of this speed trial with Odis A. Porter as the chief timer and and Orville's brother Lorin as an assistant observer. Water tower "pylons" were set up at Wilbur Wright Field McCook field and at a station in New Carlisle Ohio to mark the turning points for the voyage. One photo depicts the Wilbur Wright Field with the pylons and plane in the air. Another photo depicts Odis A. Porter the official timer keeping watch of the the Curtiss R-6 Racer as it completed the 1 km course. There are also different officials in attendance though Orville and Lorin Wright were present at all trials. This report was submitted to the FAI the Federation Aeronautique International the world governing body for air sports based in Switzerland. The FAI uses French as its main language of communication which is the reason why some of the documents in the archive have French counterparts. One major difference between the French and English versions of the speed trial report is that the French document measured the speed record for a one kilometer journey while the English report measured the speed records for the 500 km and 1000 km trials.

Other documents in English include a copy of a brief dated February 20th 1923 that recorded the survey and marking of the 1 km and 3 km straightaway course at Wilbur Wright Field. There is also a list of "Homologated National Records Established on March 29 1923 Submitted to the FAI for Homologation as World's Records." The records set were for the trials at 1 km 500 km and 100km. The "Maximum Speed over One Kilometer Straightaway" record was set by Lt. R.L. Maughan U.S.A.S in a Curtiss R-6 Racer with a 465 horsepower Curtiss 6-12 motor that reached 380.751 kilometers per hour. The "Speed Over 500 Kilometers" record was set by Lt. Alex Pearson U.S.A.S. in a Verville Sperry with a 350 horsepower Wright motor that achieved 270.06 kilometers per hour completing the journey in 1 hour and 51 minutes. Lastly the "Speed over 1000 Kilometers" record was set by Lts. H.R. Harris and R. Lockwood U.S.A.S in a DH-4-L with a 400 horsepower Liberty motor that traveled at 205 kilometers per hour over 4 hours 52 minutes to set the world record. Also included is the Official Timer's Sheet for pilot "Lt. L.J. Maitland" that records average speeds achieved during attempts of the 1 km trial.

Additional documents in French include a letter addressed to the Secretary General of FA.I. Paul Tissandier submitting the report on the new record of the speed trials held at Wilbur Wright Field. In addition there is a 2 page from the Bureau of Standards Certificate for Chronometer. This document includes a chart issued by the War Department's Air Service that measures the effect of daily temperature on the chronometer.

This archive is a record of a new world record and also shows how in early aviation it became evident that the fierce competition to set records necessitated standardized record keeping and the careful certification of timers. The procedures and rules were established by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale and administered and overseen by the local organization in each county. Wright participated in some of the more important record attempts especially as many took place in the Dayton area at Wilbur Wright field. All pieces are in very good condition and very scarce. unknown

Wright Brothers, Aviation
Wright Brothers Hydroaeroplane and Hangar Work Original Photographs and Negatives Archive ca. 1912–1913
1912. Aviation Wright brothers hydroaeroplane and early biplane models photo archive. Archive of Six pieces total: three silver-gelatin prints approx. 7" x 5". and three contemporaneous negatives two large-format film negatives and one smaller glass/film negative. Circa 1912–1913 likely Dayton Ohio area Great Miami River and a Wright Company hangar. The largest print shows a pusher-type biplane with forward elevator and floats partially submerged near a piling—an unmistakable hydroaeroplane profile—while a second dramatic sepia print captures a high column of spray in open water as a small aircraft passes overhead likely a hard alighting or water-impact sequence. A third print is an interior hangar scene: two mechanics/engineers in caps and a straw boater lean over the open framework of a Wright machine—struts bracing wires and control runs visible—as they adjust fittings along the central bay. The three negatives correspond to the water-impact and hangar views preserving additional technical detail rigging geometry float/skid attachments and the pusher layout. On visual evidence pusher configuration canard elevator twin float/skid gear and the river setting the water scenes align with Orville Wright’s 1912–1913 tests of the Wright Model C-H hydroaeroplane on the Great Miami River; the company adapted the Model C by fitting “twin 4-step hydroplanes or floats under the landing skids†and Orville subsequently made more than 100 flights in June–July 1913.

Contextually these images sit within the Wrights’ lesser-known seaplane program that followed Wilbur’s death in 1912. The Wright Model C and C-H 1912–1913 replaced the Model B as the firm’s standard machine; the C-H was the float-equipped variant that the U.S. Navy purchased three aircraft designated later as AH-4 to AH-6. Period accounts and technical summaries note the C-H’s twin contra-rotating propellers and its use in sustained test work on the Miami River south of Dayton where Orville pushed payloads and refined water handling. The Wright Seaplane Base Moraine/West Carrollton and company literature document those trials and the Navy sales underscoring how these experiments extended the Wrights’ technology into naval aviation on the eve of World War I.Mild handling and production wear overall: light edge creases and small corner bumps to the prints; one print with faint silvering and toning; negatives with light emulsion scuffing and edge tape remnants but strong density and detail. Overall very good. unknown
