Park Edwards. Introduction by Stephen Coonts.
THE ART OF WILLIAM S. PHILLIPS: THE GLORY OF FLIGHT.
Shelton Connecticut : Greenwich Workshop 1994. 172 pp 4to 12 1/4" H. Profusely and beautifully illustrated in color and b&w with reproductions of the artist's work. "William S. Phillips is a triple threat in the aviation art world. Not only is he a painter who can portray aircraft with exemplary precision but he can also place that aircraft in a panorama that rivals the work of the finest landscape artist. To top it all off he is a master of in-flight action; his detail-ed soaring work communicates the glory of flight. From the thrill of lift-off the speed of low-level flying the power of high level bombing and the danger of the dogfight to the extraordinary exhilaration of just flying William Phillips is your copilot. Through the text of 'Smithsonian' and 'National Geographic' writer Ted Park and rare archival photographs you'll meet some of the top pilots and war aces. And throught the paintings and accompanying sketches you can experience air travel like never before. The finest reproduction possible is supervised by the artist to fill these pages with more than eighty full-color pieces of art plus sketches and drawings direct from Phillips' personal sketches. In addition there are two three-page fold-outs to communicate the sensation of flying as no other book can." Faint erased pencil mark at top corner of free front endpaper tiny dint on top edge of both boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear.wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds minor rubbing 1 1/2" closed tear at bottom of rear flap-fold- archivally taped. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Parkin JH. J. H.
BELL AND BALDWIN: THEIR DEVELOPMENT OF AERODROMES AND HYDRODROMES AT BADDECK NOVA SCOTIA.
Toronto: University of Toronto Press 1964. 555 pp 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers b&w photographs tables several fold-out. "Presents a detailed chronicle of the fascinating experiments in aerial flight and with hydrofoil craft conducted by Dr. Alexander Graham Bell and his engineering assistant and collaborators Frederick Walker Casey Baldwin at Baddeck Nova Scotia. Bell was the chairman and Baldwin the chief engineer of the Aerial Experiment Association 1907-9 a group founded inspired and financed by Mrs. Bell: the successes of the Association were based largely on logical step-by-step development under the guiding genius of Dr. Bell. The detailed day-by-day records of the group's operations kept by Dr. Bell make abundantly clear that his scientific and technical contributions and his guidance and criticism were of great importance to the development of aviation and hydrofoils. His keen analytical and deductive mind was at its best in analysing failures and propounding remedies as in the suggestion of the aileron following the crash of the 'Red Wing'. Dr. Parkin provides here a brief description of Bell's amazing kite experiments which extended over many years and led to his powered- flight projects; and to place the work of Bell and Baldwin in proper perspective and to enable their accomplishments to be assessed he has included a brief record of the prior art including descriptions of the machines early designers builders and pilots including the Wrights the Voisins Bleriot and Santos Dumont. He also presents the hitherto unpublished details of the remarkable development of hydrofoil craft at Baddeck culminating after many years in the spectacular achievement in 1919 of 70.85 miles per hour by the HD-4 the fastest craft afloat at that time." Pages 463 through 494 plus one fold-out table are duplicated Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine one small edge tear a few tiny edge tears minor rubbing protected in a mylar sleeve. First Edition. Hard Cover.
