WORLD AVIATION MAP WORLD WAR II AMERICAN AIRLINES
Air World Map. By American Airlines Inc.
American Airlines. 1944. Color poster pictorial map image 22 x 33 inches 56 x 84 cm on sheet 23 x 34 inches folding to 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches as issued. Pinholes to corners little chipping to ends of centrefold not affecting map otherwise very good. This simple but graphically striking map is a fine example of the "air age" geography that was a hallmark of the late 1930s and 1940s in America. Mapmakers such as Richard Edes Harrison and Charles Owens employed new map projections to convey a more realistic sense of distance than the traditional Mercator projection allowed. In this map issued by American Airlines with the United States at its centre routes are represented by lines of airplanes: "The airplanes on the map are spaced 250 miles apart each one representing one hour's flight. By counting the number of airplanes along any route you can find the number of hours it takes to reach the places shown from the United States by air." The map is bordered by illustrations of products used in building airplanes: "some of the vital Air-Age materials are listed here.to understand the needs of our country in the Air age we must know what materials are needed to build airplanes where they can be obtained how they may be shipped and how accessible are the sources of supply." Under the heading "Fuel for the Air Age" is a listing of six plane types with speeds and number of miles per gallon flown so that at 10 cents per gallon "you can easily figure.how many War Stamps would be needed to pay for the fuel to fly a warplane to any point on the Air World Map." . WORLD WAR II / AVIATION Petrucelli A. mapmaker.
Global Map for Global War and Global Peace. Map title: Freedom of the Air.
Aluminum Company of America. 1943. Color map 20 x 17 1/2 inches on sheet 24 x 33 1/4 inches folded as issued to 8 x 5 3/4 inches. This fold out pamphlet issued by Alcoa Aluminum is an excellent example of the importance of maps and mapmaking in the United States during World War II. America was suddenly keenly made aware that the "Aviation Age" had had consequences for the geographical position it occupied vis a vis Asia and Europe. The column to the left of the map clearly sets this out in its discussion of the "new kind of projection": "The big map in the center of this sheet is a new kind of projection of the entire surface of the earth which has been developed to give a more nearly accurate conception of air directions and distances. It is called an Azimuthal Equidistant Projection or more simply a North Polar Projection. This kind of map shows the whole world continuously and it has the big advantage that straight lines between two points in the northern hemisphere the central part of the map lie quite close to the actual Great Circle route." Around the border of the map are displayed the airplane markings on planes of different countries. On the verso are more insignia for US Army Navy and Marines and silhouette illustration so friendly and enemy planes. Antonio Petrucelli was a noted illustrator and "journalistic cartographer" whose work was published in Fortune magazine amongst many other newspapers and magazines. . World War II: Aviation
U.S. NAVY PRIMARY FLIGHT TRAINING MANUAL
Glenview IL: Naval Air Training Command 1945. First Edition. Wraps. Good . 4to. Illustrated wraps. Contemporary post binding added at left margin. Most paper lost from spine. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound.

An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. OCLC notes only 2 institutional holdings one at The Smithsonian the other in the aviation archives at Wright State in Dayton OH. None in commerce June 2015. 243pp. Naval Air Training Command paperback

None in commerce June 2015. 243pp. Naval Air Training Command paperback books
