‎Reach for the Sky. Afterword by Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader. FINE COPY IN PUBLISHER'S SLIP-CASE‎

‎8vo., First Edition thus, with fine portrait frontispiece, 16pp of plates in monochrome, map and printed endpapers; blue boards blocked in black, black cloth back lettered in white, a fine copy in publisher's board slip-case.‎

‎BRICKHILL Paul‎

‎Reach for the Sky. The Story of Douglas Bader. [Sixth Impression]. SIGNED BY BADER: IN FULL MOROCCO‎

‎8vo., Sixth Impression, with frontispiece and 24 plates on 12; handsomely bound in burgundy full crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands ruled in gilt, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt with a propeller motif, hand-made endpapers, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. SIGNED BY BADER ON DEDICATION. Published five months after the first impression. Written by Paul Brickhill (already celebrated as the author of another RAF classic 'The Dam Busters', 1951), 'Reach for the Sky' remains the best account of the legless Battle of Britain hero. It was the basis of Lewis Gilbert's hugely successful feature film (1954) starring Kenneth More in what was arguably his finest role. One of the legendary figures of the Royal Air Force, Douglas Bader was from the outset an outstanding athlete. As a cadet at Cranwell he gained his 'blues' for cricket, rugby, hockey and boxing. He represented the RAF at both cricket and rugby and would probably have been capped for England but for the accident that changed his life and created a legend. In 1931 a near-fatal air crash left him legless. Knowing that no man with such a handicap had ever walked without a stick he nevertheless found his way back to fitness playing tennis, golf and many others sports. He even flew again, until the authorities determined that a pilot without legs could not fly and discharged him from the service. With the outbreak of War he fought to be readmitted, not merely to a desk job, but back to the cockpit. Finally he was given command of a flight which quickly increased to five squadrons as the RAF realised that he was not only an outstanding pilot but an inspired leader of men and a fighter tactician almost of genius. Even as a POW his spirit was such that his captors were forced at one stage to remove his artificial limbs to prevent the chance of his escaping. Enser, p.375 (recording the first edition)‎

‎Reach For The Sky: The Story Of Douglas Bader‎

‎Fontana Books London U.K. 1957. First Fontana Edition. Softcover. VG/--. 7 H x 4 1/4 W. NON SMOKING STORE. MY LISTING INCLUDES PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK FOR SALE. Book VERY GOOD PLUS/ Covers Good Minus. Covers are white/blue lettering white/red/black pictorial front three black/white photos on back. Spine is totally original and is legible but is a bit sunned has vertical spine creases and has clear cello tape on both vertical sides and 8 pieces of 1/2 inch tape across spine horizontally from top to bottom the cello tape has gone a bit yellow so this looks terrible but the covers aren’t as bad as they look. Front cover is flat and clear no rips several creases across top corner several creases on body of cover but many of them are not easy to see front cover has a few places where the top layer of paper is rubbed off biggest is an irregularly shaped area which is 1 x 1 inch from outer edge to outer edge the front cover has the 8 pieces of cello tape coming onto it from spine and these are yellowed some cracks in front cover colour have made thin white lines so front cover isn’t pretty but it is all there see my photo minor edge wear. Back cover is white which is a bit age darkened is clear no rips several creases across bottom corner several creases on body of cover but many are not easy to see no rub marks has a 1/2 x 1/8 inch light brown stain on top cover edge back cover also has the 8 pieces of cello tape slightly yellowed and a bit crispy. Page edges a bit sunned and side edge has a few small ink lines. Inside of book is tight clean clear bright flat. Some age darkening inside covers and on pages. At ffep and title page I think there was an attempt to glue the spine down because the ffep is glued to the cover unevenly and there is a blob of glue extending about 1/2 inch into ffep at title page it seems that the glue ran onto the inner edge of the ffep and next to the title page the back of the ffep is bumpy and has two small closed rips. At the back cover the same attempt with glue was made which has glued the back end paper to the inside of the back cover by about 1/2 inch. This book isn’t very pretty but aside from the cover it is all there tight and clear. Book 158. Black/white photo plates. Fontana Books London U.K. paperback‎
