REARDEN JIM; DE CREEFT BILL FOREWORD
Travel Air Nc9084: The History Of A 75-year-old Working Airplane
Pictorial Histories Publishing Missoula: 2004. Softcover. Brand new book. One of the joys of aviation is hangar flying--sharing stories about planes and people and places. Jim Rearden's Travel Air NC9084 offers the same kind of fascinating tales and details in his new book about an historic 1929 aircraft and the heroes that flew it. Bill de Creeft writes in the Foreword "They're too valuable and rare to risk now too beautiful and shiny to fly freight into a gravel strip or to stuff in 'just one more' wet goat hunter off a high windy lake." He should know Bill and 9084 did just that for 35 years in Alaska. Today he flies sightseeing rides in Travel Air NC9084 from Homer Alaska; flights that are more considerate of Kachemak Air Service's recently restored and exquisitely finished "Limousine of the Air." During the three decades that Bill worked 9084 he learned just what a capable aircraft Travel Air Manufacturing Company had built. He also learned about the aircraft's amazing history often from the very people who made it. Named one of Alaska's Heros of the Decade by the Anchorage Times for daring and selfless rescues Bill made some of that history himself. With just the right mix of enthralling stories aeronautical history technical details and personal insights Travel Air NC9084 chronicles Bill and Barbara de Creeft's experiences with 9084 the aircraft's contribution to aviation history and their "nothing by chance" encounters with the people who helped make that history. You'll read about a 13-day non-stop endurance flight and gasp when you realize that odd shape in the old air-to-air photo is actually a mechanic working on the engine thousands of feet above the ground and inches from the propeller. You'll read about Tex Hendrix laboring in a 1930's abandoned Texas dust bowl dance hall replacing gas pipe used for longerons with proper aircraft tubing. You'll read about a Ziegfield dancer smoke jumpers a murderer and desperate survivors--all part of 9084's history. Jim Rearden's Travel Air NC9084 is a chronicle of an aircraft's seventy-five years of continuous commercial service and a pilot's 22000 hours 21000 on floats of experience in the skies of Alaska. Anyone with a taste for aviation history and for adventure will love it. ISBN: 157510105X. Pictorial Histories Publishing, Missoula: 2004 paperback

OLSEN W. SCOTT
Hard Air: Adventures From The Edge Of Flying
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2008. Softcover. Brand new book. Hard Air is a book about extraordinary flyingflying under conditions that keep fighters on the carrier deck and rockets on the launch pada book about rescue missions and long lonely flights to gather urgently needed information about flights to places where no one should be flying: into hurricanes firestorms and deep engine-killing cold. As a pilot himself W. Scott Olsen brings to these tales a sense of wonder and adventure as well as a genuine firsthand understanding of the dangers and rigors of such flying. In prose that deftly conveys the grit and grace of his subjects Olsen transports us into the air with hurricane hunters who fly into the planet's fiercest storms with helicopter pilots racing emergency patients to clinics with Canadian pilots who fly supplies to the Arctic and with heavy air tanker pilots who drop water and slurry on remote wildfires. Their stories afford a rare look into the working lives of pilots whose methods are extreme and missions are simple: get there do the job and get out alive. W. Scott Olsen is a professor of English at Concordia College in Moorhead Minnesota. He is editor of the literary journal Ascent and author of several books including At Speed: Traveling the Long Road between Two Points Nebraska 2006 and Gravity: The Allure of Distance. "Hard Air is an exceptional read and a rare piece of work as much sheer artistry as deep exploration of flight. Olsen is a skillful writer and it shows here start to stop."William Langewiesche author of Inside the Sky "His narrative is reminiscent in tone of Beryl Markham's early African aviation adventures chronicled in West with the Night. . . . Olsen . . . does a good job of capturing in a journalistic interview style the experiences of the men and women who routinely fly these adventurous missions. The stories are good enough to inspire future pilots."Sara Tompson Library Journal "It's hard to imagine a more gripping book for aviation buffs than Olsen's depiction of some of the hairier aspects of service networks usually taken for granted and seldom properly noticed by the media."Roland Green Booklist University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2008 paperback
