Claringbould, Michael & Ingman, Peter
Solomons Air War Volume 4 Operation Ke: The Evacuation of Guadalcanal January - February 1943 Signed copy
Kent Town SA: Avonmore Books. 2025. Small Quarto Size approx 17.5cm x 24cm. MINT - a NEW book. Illustrated with Colour and Black & White Photographs. Colour illustrations by Claringbold. Signed by Peter Ingman on the title page. Robust professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels. 184 pages. This fourth volume of Solomons Air War chronicles aerial warfare throughout the Solomons theatre during the months of January and February 1943. It can be read alone or as part of the ongoing Solomons Air War series. This crucial period saw the Japanese launch Operation Ke which was the evacuation of Guadalcanal. This was a widespread air offensive that included the Japanese Army Air Force in the Solomons for the first time. Ironically this operation was arguably the most successful yet for the Japanese in the theatre. Against this background the intense air campaign continued. Enjoying a secure foothold on Guadalcanal and ever-growing facilities Cactus Air Force expanded and pushed operations northwards into the Solomons chain. Temporary reinforcements were provided by carrier squadrons from both sides operating from land bases including for the first time air units from USN escort carriers. Among new types to debut in this period were USMC F4U Corsair fighters and USN PB4Y-1 Liberators. This chronicle has been written using primary Allied and Japanese records to give a fresh factual and highly detailed account of all aspects of the intricate Solomons air campaign. . New. 1st Edition. Softcover. Avonmore Books paperback

Wright Brothers, Aviation
Wright Brothers Hydroaeroplane and Hangar Work Original Photographs and Negatives Archive ca. 1912–1913
1912. Aviation Wright brothers hydroaeroplane and early biplane models photo archive. Archive of Six pieces total: three silver-gelatin prints approx. 7" x 5". and three contemporaneous negatives two large-format film negatives and one smaller glass/film negative. Circa 1912–1913 likely Dayton Ohio area Great Miami River and a Wright Company hangar. The largest print shows a pusher-type biplane with forward elevator and floats partially submerged near a piling—an unmistakable hydroaeroplane profile—while a second dramatic sepia print captures a high column of spray in open water as a small aircraft passes overhead likely a hard alighting or water-impact sequence. A third print is an interior hangar scene: two mechanics/engineers in caps and a straw boater lean over the open framework of a Wright machine—struts bracing wires and control runs visible—as they adjust fittings along the central bay. The three negatives correspond to the water-impact and hangar views preserving additional technical detail rigging geometry float/skid attachments and the pusher layout. On visual evidence pusher configuration canard elevator twin float/skid gear and the river setting the water scenes align with Orville Wright’s 1912–1913 tests of the Wright Model C-H hydroaeroplane on the Great Miami River; the company adapted the Model C by fitting “twin 4-step hydroplanes or floats under the landing skids†and Orville subsequently made more than 100 flights in June–July 1913.<br /> <br /> Contextually these images sit within the Wrights’ lesser-known seaplane program that followed Wilbur’s death in 1912. The Wright Model C and C-H 1912–1913 replaced the Model B as the firm’s standard machine; the C-H was the float-equipped variant that the U.S. Navy purchased three aircraft designated later as AH-4 to AH-6. Period accounts and technical summaries note the C-H’s twin contra-rotating propellers and its use in sustained test work on the Miami River south of Dayton where Orville pushed payloads and refined water handling. The Wright Seaplane Base Moraine/West Carrollton and company literature document those trials and the Navy sales underscoring how these experiments extended the Wrights’ technology into naval aviation on the eve of World War I.Mild handling and production wear overall: light edge creases and small corner bumps to the prints; one print with faint silvering and toning; negatives with light emulsion scuffing and edge tape remnants but strong density and detail. Overall very good. unknown

Challenger Explosion, Space and Aviation
Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster Presidential Commission Report
1986. Space and Aviation Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. Report to the President: Report at a Glance. Washington D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office 1986. First edition. Volume I totaling approximately 30 pages which includes the main findings. This abbreviated summary of the Report to the President by the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident offers a concise and accessible overview of the findings surrounding the catastrophic failure of STS-51-L which disintegrated 73 seconds after liftoff on January 28 1986 killing all seven crew members aboard. <br /> <br /> Commonly known as the Rogers Commission Report this document distills the conclusions of a body convened by President Ronald Reagan and chaired by former Secretary of State William P. Rogers with members including astronauts Neil Armstrong and Sally Ride. This "Report at a Glance" was issued for broader circulation and comprehension a key part of the Commission’s goal “to document our findings and make recommendations for your consideration.†The pamphlet opens with a solemn “In Memoriam†page bearing the official crew portrait of the Challenger astronauts including Commander Francis R. Dick Scobee Pilot Michael J. Smith Mission Specialists Ellison S. Onizuka Judith Resnik and Ronald E. McNair and Payload Specialists Christa McAuliffe and Gregory B. Jarvis. Beneath the image appears a poignant quote from Reagan’s televised address: “The future is not free: the story of all human progress is one of a struggle against all odds. It was built by men and women like our seven star voyagers who answered a call beyond duty.†A letter from Rogers to President Reagan dated June 6 1986 reaffirms the national pain and resolve: “The nation’s task now is to move ahead to return to safe space flight. There could be no more fitting tribute to the Challenger crew than to do so.â€<br /> <br /> The core of the report identifies a systemic failure in NASA’s risk assessment and engineering culture. The immediate cause of the explosion detailed in Chapter IV was “a combustion gas leak through the right Solid Rocket Motor at field joint†attributed to O-ring failure exacerbated by the unusually cold temperatures on launch day. The report states bluntly: “The consensus of the Commission. is that the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger was caused by a failure in the joint between the two lower segments of the right Solid Rocket Motor.†A diagram on the facing page maps acronyms and component systems central to understanding the shuttle’s propulsion including ET External Tank LOX Liquid Oxygen and SSME Space Shuttle Main Engine. Findings were unflinching: “Launch site activities. were not considered as direct causes of the accident†yet “weaknesses in NASA’s decision-making structure†were. This offering Volume I contains the report which summarizes the main findings and appendices A-D while Volumes II and III contain the rest of the appendices and Volumes IV and V contain hearings of the Presidential Commission. Light foxing to cover small owner’s name written on upper right. Interior pages clean and well-preserved. Overall very good condition. unknown

Aviation, Patent
1909 Aviation Patent for Airplane Stabilizer
A rare and significant early aviation patent issued by the French government with Stamp from Chicago patent office. The patent is issued to Camille Bollée in 1909 and stamped in Chicago in 1910. The paptent is for a stabilization device for airplanes just six years after the Wright brothers' first powered flight. Bollée Camille. Dispositif équilibreur pour aéroplanes. Paris: Office National de la Propriété Industrielle 1909. 3 pages 1 illustrated plate. Illustrated with six technical diagrams. Original printed paper wrapper measuring 11" x 7.5". This patent reflects the nascent field of aviation engineering and represents an early French effort to advance aeronautical control systems.<br /> <br /> Submitted on March 26 1909 granted on July 12 and published August 21 Bollée’s patent outlines a novel mechanism for maintaining an airplane's equilibrium through a rotating vertical shaft fitted with multiple adjustable surfaces. The invention is described as consisting of one or more stabilizing elements "composed of a generally vertical shaft. capable of a rotating motion around its axis upon which one or several surfaces are mounted" “Celui-ci se compose d’un ou de plusieurs éléments équilibreurs constitués chacun par un arbre généralement vertical… sur lequel sont montées une ou plusieurs surfacesâ€. The diagrams illustrate how the adjustment of the angle of these surfaces—whether neutral inclined or reversed—affects lift and drag forces to counteract instability. According to Bollée his device enables an aircraft to react immediately to lateral gusts or slippage: “The aim of the invention is to maintain the balance of airplanes particularly during lateral gusts or slips†“Le dispositif objet de l’invention a aussi pour but de maintenir l’équilibre des aéroplanes… par exemple au moment d’un coup de vent de côté ou au cas d’un glissement de l’aéroplane par le traversâ€.<br /> <br /> This document holds historical importance as an early French response to the rapid international race for controlled flight especially notable for its focus on mechanical stabilization rather than pilot skill. Camille Bollée’s patent exemplifies the period's inventive fervor and reflects the ambitions of pre-WWI European inventors to refine aerial navigation. The patent also anticipates concepts that would later become fundamental in gyroscopic and servo-controlled flight systems representing a formative stage in the development of modern aircraft stability mechanisms Near fine condition overall. An exceptional and scarce artifact from the dawn of powered aviation demonstrating France's role in early aeronautical innovation. Bollée's family were well known bellfounders and his father Amédée Bollée 1844–1917 was the major pioneer in the automobile industry who produced several steam cars. Both Léon Bollée and his older brother Amédée-Ernest-Marie 1867–1926 became major automobile manufacturers. The third brother was Camille who worked on the just starting Aviation industry. Light age toning to pages faint crease to upper corner small ink stamp from a Chicago patent office dated July 27 1910 on front page indicating American interest. unknown

Aviation, Women's History
Breakthrough Women in Space and Aviation Photo Archive 1930s-1970s
Women's History Aviation Women fought long and arduously for the majority of the 20th century to gain respect and credibility in the space and aviation field even to this day women are largely underrepresented. 11 items. This archive includes 10 silver gelatin photographs and 1 tobacco card of Jean Batten. Of the 10 photographs 7 are press releases of semi-identified and important female pilots and astronauts spanning four decades from the 1930s-1970s. 3 small photos measure 2.5" x 3" and the other 7 between 6.5" x 8" - 8" x 10". Photos are from various locations in California College Park Maryland Oregon and Sussex UK. Most have original articles taped en verso describing the events in the photos. In the mid 20th century women began participating in competitive air races which garnered them more praise and legitimacy. One photograph shows the first American woman and the third woman to fly in space Sally K. Ride in a NASA craft with three other men all wearing helmets. Another pivotal photograph shows a the first woman to fly for a major British airline. The air hostess turned pilot Yvonne Pope became the first woman to pilot for major British Airlines in 1965. She's seen smiling in uniform and headset at the cockpit of a Dakota aircraft at Gatwick Airport. Multiple photographs show women participating in races one photograph taken in San Mateo CA 1954 is of a mother and daughter duo Mrs. Ardel Hauk and her 17 year old daughter Carol. The two are enrolled in competing at the 10th Annual All Woman Transcontinental Air Race. The ladies are shown smiling as they inspect the engine on their Piper Tri-Pacer. The three smaller photographs from 1939 show three different competitors in their planes set for the Langley Day Air Races in College Park MD. One young 17 year old aviation student Laura Marie Thomas is seen behind the wheel of a plane shaking hands with the oldest licensed pilot in the world at the time of 1945 Mr. James W. Montee. Montee is quoted saying "Women make better pilots than men because they follow the rules better." One photo of accomplished aviator Dianna Bixby is shown training at the Lockheed Laboratories in 1954. Following the death of her Air Force husband at the Battle of the Bulge Bixby had major aspirations to become the first solo female pilot to traverse the globe. She spent countless hours training and held several air records at the time. Through her extraneous efforts and large scale funding she passed away during one of her international travels before reaching her goal. The photo shows her determinate expression as she undergoes a decompression test right before she set off on her international flight. Lastly one photograph shows an elderly woman with aviation goggles seated in the pit of a school plane at Duck Air Service flying school in Oakland CA. The woman is seen smiling and ready for take off. Photographs are mostly clean and crisp with the photo of Yvonne Pope having original press corrections. Overall very good condition. Legislative barriers as well as social and economic factors made it nearly impossible for women to participate in early aviation making these photos rare glimpses into the lives of women who overcame the odds. unknown

Aviation, Women History
Early Female Aviator & WAAC Pilots Photograph Archive 1920s-1950s
Women Aviatrix Legislative barriers as well as social and economic factors made it nearly impossible for women to participate in early aviation making these photos rare glimpses into the lives of women who overcame the odds. Archive of 15 black and white silver gelatin photographs. Dating from the early days of aviation the 1920s to post WWII 1950s. Photos measure 2.75" x 3.5" - 8" x 10". An early 1920s photo shows a woman seated in the cockpit of a plane with one hand on the wheel and one rested on the exterior of the plane a formally dressed woman stands poses by the plane and a male aviator. Another early photo is from 1923 and depicts a female pilot in full leather uniform in front of a Curtis biplane on the tarmac. Included are several notable female aviators from the 1920s-30s; Amelia Earhart in the cockpit of her plane that she took on a world tour Ms. Georgina Pope Yeatman a Philadelphia socialite and pioneering female aviator and transatlantic aviatrix Mildred Johnson. A real photo post card from the 1940s shows a woman wearing aviation gloves with a jacket swung over her shoulder and smiling in front of an aircraft with the caption "Reno Browne. Queen of the Westerns." A 1942 photo shows WAAC Aviatrix and Third Officer Dorothy Mitchell of San Francisco in WAAC uniform entering the cockpit. A press release from 1929 shows six women wearing aviation goggles atop their head all wearing dresses and heels but one who is in a leather aviator jacket slacks and boots with a cigarette in hand. The article pasted en verso is titled "Birdwomen Organize in Boston" and showcases New England's first aviation club for women and names them from left to right as "Olivia Keet Matthews Betsy Kelley Mrs. Mildred Chase Mrs. Mary Bacon Mrs. Joan Fay Shankle and Mrs. Teddy Fenyon. Another interesting photo shows two women in day dresses Isabel McCraye of Lemon Grove CA and Betty McNeil of LaMesa CA exiting a Beachcraft Bonanza after crossing the finish line within a flying competition held in Westfield MA 1955. With a mix of individual portraits and group shots of women aviators standing in front of their crafts or behind the cockpit this collection documents some of the first woman aviatrix. Minor chipping on some edges but overall all original silver gelatin photos in this archive are in very good condition. unknown
