Women in Aviation, Photography
Original Photo of Female Pilot a Testament to Women's Role in Early Aviation Circa 1920s
Women in Aviation. Silver gelatin print photo of female pilot sitting in early aircraft with her hands on the gears the body of the plane partially visible behind her. Circa 1920s. 4.75†x 6.5†inches. Legislative barriers as well as social and economic factors made it nearly impossible for women to participate in early aviation. Getting through flight school and gaining access to a plane to fly was a testament to the incredible tenacity and resources required for a woman to access both. Photo shows a woman sitting belted to pilot’s seat one hand on each large gear shift feet prepped on the thin ledge above the plane’s front tire. She wears a gingham hat cut close to her head a wool coat wool pants and knee-high leather boots with protective-wear covering the shins. The plane’s front tire is muddy suggesting she’s just landed in a field. A few ink spots do not obstruct the plane or female pilot. This original photo is evidence that women participated in early aviation. Overall good condition. unknown

Aviation, WWI. W. W.
Early Aviation Photo Archive of Biplanes or balloons in Army Airfield at Fort Sill Oklahoma during W.W.I.
1918. Early Aviation Archive of 26 silver gelatin print photos. The archive includes over 20 images of Biplanes or balloons from WW 1 era. All photos unbound measuring aprox 7.25" x 5.25" inches. The pictures show early biplanes and aviators in WWI at Henry Post Airfield at Fort Sill Oklahoma. Henry Post at Fort Sill was a pilot training school for the first generation of American Army pilots. The men in this archive would have been part of the recently formed US Army Air Service established in May of 1918. The army received its first test airplane form the Wright bros in 1909. In its first decade with aircraft the Army operated aviation squads as seen in this photo archive. There are multiple photos of the men in and around the early DH-4 two-seat biplane bomber of the First World War. The DH.4 biplane first flew in August 1916 entering operational service in France on 6 March 1917 less than a year later. DH.4 biplane was a conventional tractor two bay biplane of all-wooden construction with its fuselage and underside still covered by plywood. The DH-4 was the only American manufactured plane that saw combat in WW.I given the rudimentary state of US airpower and late entry into combat. The DH-4 was typically outfitted with 300 pounds of bombs. The archive includes many photos of the biplanes in the air one photo shows several DH-4 bombers soaring in the clouds in a Flying-V formation. A handwritten caption on one image "October 29 1918 Sergeant Schauble " is depicted flying in a DH-4 at 3700 feet as well as going on a "parachute trip". One photo shows a serious plane crash with two DH-4s biplanes nose down in the ground. The pilots are also depicted in hot air balloons. Fort Sill was home to several US Army Balloon Companies during this period which were still primarily used for reconnaissance and directing aerial bombardment during World War I. The photo archive includes many shots of biplanes in the clouds or on runways with pilots in goggles including 4 images of pilots or troops in group shots. Most photos show the planes or balloons in mid air. Many photos have black album paper on verso. Overall this early military aviation archive is in very good condition. unknown

Wright Brothers, Aviation
1923 Archive Recording an Aviation World Speed Record Overseen by Orville Wright
Archive of documenting a new flight speed records directed by aviation pioneer Orville Wright. Very scarce archive of 14 total pages. Documents are in English and French. Comes with two photographs further documenting the event photos black and white measuring 4.5" x 3.75" and 6.5" x 4.5" inches. One document addressed to the National Aeronautic Association reports of speed records set at 500 and 1000 kilometers at McCook Field and Wilbur Wright Field in Dayton Ohio on March 29th 1923. Aviation pioneer Orville Wright was the directing official of this speed trial with Odis A. Porter as the chief timer and and Orville's brother Lorin as an assistant observer. Water tower "pylons" were set up at Wilbur Wright Field McCook field and at a station in New Carlisle Ohio to mark the turning points for the voyage. One photo depicts the Wilbur Wright Field with the pylons and plane in the air. Another photo depicts Odis A. Porter the official timer keeping watch of the the Curtiss R-6 Racer as it completed the 1 km course. There are also different officials in attendance though Orville and Lorin Wright were present at all trials. This report was submitted to the FAI the Federation Aeronautique International the world governing body for air sports based in Switzerland. The FAI uses French as its main language of communication which is the reason why some of the documents in the archive have French counterparts. One major difference between the French and English versions of the speed trial report is that the French document measured the speed record for a one kilometer journey while the English report measured the speed records for the 500 km and 1000 km trials.<br /> <br /> Other documents in English include a copy of a brief dated February 20th 1923 that recorded the survey and marking of the 1 km and 3 km straightaway course at Wilbur Wright Field. There is also a list of "Homologated National Records Established on March 29 1923 Submitted to the FAI for Homologation as World's Records." The records set were for the trials at 1 km 500 km and 100km. The "Maximum Speed over One Kilometer Straightaway" record was set by Lt. R.L. Maughan U.S.A.S in a Curtiss R-6 Racer with a 465 horsepower Curtiss 6-12 motor that reached 380.751 kilometers per hour. The "Speed Over 500 Kilometers" record was set by Lt. Alex Pearson U.S.A.S. in a Verville Sperry with a 350 horsepower Wright motor that achieved 270.06 kilometers per hour completing the journey in 1 hour and 51 minutes. Lastly the "Speed over 1000 Kilometers" record was set by Lts. H.R. Harris and R. Lockwood U.S.A.S in a DH-4-L with a 400 horsepower Liberty motor that traveled at 205 kilometers per hour over 4 hours 52 minutes to set the world record. Also included is the Official Timer's Sheet for pilot "Lt. L.J. Maitland" that records average speeds achieved during attempts of the 1 km trial.<br /> <br /> Additional documents in French include a letter addressed to the Secretary General of FA.I. Paul Tissandier submitting the report on the new record of the speed trials held at Wilbur Wright Field. In addition there is a 2 page from the Bureau of Standards Certificate for Chronometer. This document includes a chart issued by the War Department's Air Service that measures the effect of daily temperature on the chronometer. <br /> <br /> This archive is a record of a new world record and also shows how in early aviation it became evident that the fierce competition to set records necessitated standardized record keeping and the careful certification of timers. The procedures and rules were established by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale and administered and overseen by the local organization in each county. Wright participated in some of the more important record attempts especially as many took place in the Dayton area at Wilbur Wright field. All pieces are in very good condition and very scarce. unknown

Typed letter signed "Boris Sergievsky" to "Whom it May Concern"
New York 1942. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. Old folds lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature otherwise a fine letter with a bold clear signature. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. <br /> <br /> Reading in part: “I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country… I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort.â€<br /> <br /> Despite Sergievsky’s recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations.
