‎Rescue Under Fire : The Story of DUST OFF in Vietnam‎

‎Atglen Pennsylvania: Schiffer Military / Aviation History 1998. Near Fine condition in a Near Fine dust jacket. NOT price clipped $24.95. NO chips. NO tears. A bright shiny clean copy. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Well illustrated with over 100 Vietnam War photographs. By the author of THE ADVISOR: THE PHOENIX PROGRAM IN VIETNAM. Index. Bound in the original dark gray cloth stamped in light gray on the spine and front cover. From the Dust Jacket: "It is almost impossible to capture in a single work the enormous impact DUST OFF had on the Vietnam War. However John Cook has done it in a most compelling sensitive manner. Here for the first time is one of the most incredible stories produced by Vietnam. This is the story of the men who risked everything to fly their evacuation helicopters into the teeth of the most intense fighting the war produced to achieve a single goal -- evacuate the wounded. And that is what they did day after day night after night under every condition imaginable. They flew through enemy fire cloud banks monsoons fog and darkness to reach the wounded. When it was all over the men of DUST OFF had performed an unbelievable feat -- hundreds of thousands of wounded had been snatched from the battlefield. After exhaustive research and countless interviews John Cook has skillfully woven all the threads of this epic story into a seamless fabric of dedication sacrifice and courage. While it reads with the smoothness and consistency of a first-rate novel there is no fiction here. The DUST OFF crews are real these events happened and Cook provides the absolutely critical human dimension that makes this story come alive." . First Edition. Hardcover. ‎The Hostile Sky : A Hellcat Flyer in the Pacific‎

‎Annapolis Maryland: Naval Institute Press 2003. A beautiful copy. Fine condition in a Fine dust jacket. NO chips. NO tears. Bright shiny clean square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Bound in the original blue cloth lettered in shiny silver on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "In the summer of 1942 Jim Vernon a nineteen-year-old student in Butte Montana joined the U.S. Navy's aviation cadet training program. By the end of the war he was flying F6F Hellcats from the USS Ticonderoga against the Japanese mainland. This memoir provides a carrier pilot's view of the conflict in the Pacific during the final months of the war when atomic bombs were dropped and Japan capitulated. A member of VBF-87 Vernon gives a highly personal eyewitness account of life in a bomber-fighter squadron and the roller-coaster emotions involved in combat sorties over hostile sea and land. He describes his feelings about meeting the challenges of war and offers stirring memories of his love of flying and the camaraderie of his flying mates -- both in the air and on liberty. Added to this entertaining narrative are details of the mobilization and training of carrier pilots as well as a discussion of the high incidence of noncombat fatalities and the air group's response to the kamikaze threat information that contributes important dimensions to the overall story of the air war. Completely candid about his emotions regarding day and night landings and errors made in the cockpit Vernon gives a vivid glimpse into the past at a time when teenagers matured rapidly as they faced the realities of war. His recollections will strike a cord of recognition with aviators everywhere and will inform and entertain those with an interest in World War II combat.". First Printing of the First Edition. From the rear cover: "During the years when the outcome of World War II was very much in doubt the skies over Europe were the setting for the greatest air battles ever fought. In that titanic struggle no pilots were more feared by Allied aircrews than the men of Jagdgeschwader 26 nicknamed the 'Abbeville Kids.' Ask any veteran of the America Eighth Air Force about the Abbeville Kids and he'll tell you stories of Goering's elite yellow-nosed fighter unit whose slashing attacks always seemed to come from the best position. Their fame was legendary and their bases in northern France were to be avoided at all costs. This is the story of the JG 26 pilots. A microcosm of the entire war exists in the rise and fall of this famous fighter wing from its founding during Hitler's military buildup through its glory days in the first years of the war right up to the grim final hours of the Third Reich." Chapter notes. Bibliography. Index. First printing with complete number row 54321 on the copyright page. From the Dust Jacket: "At the start of the twentieth century the United States led the world in advances in aviation with the first successful engine-powered flights at Kitty Hawk North Carolina and Dayton Ohio beginning in 1903. Fifteen years later however American airmen flew European-designed aircraft because American planes were woefully inadequate for service on the Western Front. Why was the United States so poorly prepared to engage in aerial combat in World War I To answer this question Herbert Johnson takes a look at the early years of U.S. military aviation exploring the cultural technical political and organizational factors that stunted its evolution. Among the themes he traces are a chronic lack of government funding for military aeronautics intraservice conflict over control of the aviation program and the disruptive influence of a civilian 'aeronaut constituency' both on military discipline and on Congressional and public attitudes toward army aviation. Public misunderstanding was further fueled by the army's vacillation between lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air weapon systems Johnson says and public opinion was repelled by high-risk exhibition flying and revelations of negligence and favoritism in the Signal Corps's management of the aviation program. On the technical side the Wright brothers' patent litigation hindered the development of American aircraft and crippled the domestic aviation industry's manufacturing capacity. The United States then entered World War I with obsolete aircraft." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hard Cover. ‎Washington and London: Smithsonian Institution Press 2001. Fine condition in bright shiny Fine Dust Jacket. No chips. No tears. No creases. No remainder marks. No owner's name or bookplate. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Clean square tight and unmarked. Sharp corners. Illustrated with 8 pages of photos. Chapter notes. Bibliography. Index. First printing with complete row 54321 on the copyright page. From the Dust Jacket: "Mason Patrick began his military aviation career in 1918 when Gen. John J. Pershing selected him to command the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force at a critical juncture in World War I. Patrick one of Pershing's former West Point classmates and an engineer by training did not earn his wings until 1923 but by virtue of his intellect political acumen and organizational skills he transformed the Air Service and set it on the path to independence from the U.S. Army. In this assessment of Patrick's aviation career Robert P. White credits Patrick not his more vocal second-in-command Billy Mitchell with ensuring the survival of the Air Service at a time when it faced critical internal and external pressures. While Mitchell played the role of the attention-grabbing publicist Patrick skillfully functioned as the true leader of the Air Service expertly maneuvering behind the scenes and in selected public forums to ultimately ensure the creation of the Air Corps. Patrick took a gradualist approach to the question of the Air Service's status seeing autonomy within the U. S. Army as an attainable goal that would serve as a stepping-stone to full independence later. He was certainly not averse to a good fight; the confrontations and challenges he faced to ensure the continued viability of the nation's airpower demonstrate his determination intelligence wit and charm. One of the first aviation officers to recognize the full potential of airpower during war and peacetime Patrick was remarkably successful in gaining support for the three legs of his aviation triangle: military aviation commercial aviation and the aviation-manufacturing base. Patrick's tenure as chief of the Air Service and later the Air Corps made possible the emergence of an independent Air Force.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hard Cover.
