These 48 images encapsulate the devastation of World War I not only capturing many of the French & German aircraft but also downed planes casualties significant historical figures such as General Pershing on an inspection tour as well as the effects of bombardment on French buildings and public works. Aircraft identified in the images include the massive Handley Page Type O biplane bomber Spad biplane downed German Zeppelin a Nieuport 17 C.1 French sesquiplane fighter; Voisin biplane a French dirigible and others. Also included are images of German aviators’ remains near their downed plane German casualties on the battlefield one pile of skeletal remains along with German Turret Gun German POW’s on the march and French tank. Passengers Carried on Aerial Trips and The Science of Aerial Navigation Taught under the Personal Supervision of Silas Christofferson.
San Francisco: Christofferson Aircraft Mfg. Co. n. d. circa 1912. Very Good. 16 x 10.5 cm. Handbill printed recto only. White stock printed in black. Long pencil notation to verso presumably detailing a streetcar trip in San Francisco "Up Market down Van Ness -- Outer zone -- down Zone. avenue to aviation field -- around field -- many pictures. Art stood all way". Slight crease near one corner else remarkably well-preserved. A rare promotional piece for Silas Christofferson and the Christofferson Aircraft Manufacturing Co. advertising aviation as "a safe and sane sport". Free exhibitions were offered daily "at the beach" presumably near the Christofferson hangar on Ocean Drive at Sloat Boulevard. Silas Christofferson was with his brother Harry one of the "early birds of aviation" and became known for such feats as flying in 1912 from the top of the Multnomah Building in Portland Oregon to the Vancouver barracks eight miles away. That year both he and the Christofferson Aircraft Mfg. Co. set up shop in San Francisco which is why we date this handbill to around that time. Christofferson died in a plane crash in 1916. Program from the 1956 AWTAR which began at the San Mateo County Airport in San Mateo California and ended at Bishop Airport in Flint Michigan. The race included 50 pilots many but not all of whom flew with co-pilots; short bios and pictures of each pilot and her co-pilot where applicable are included here along with brief articles on the airports and locations at each end of the race handicapping the challenge of the race itself etc.Scarce. The West Side Y.M.C.A. Airplane School Notebook from 1918
New York: Y.M.C.A. Training School 1918. Octavo. Three ring notebook filled with unlined loose-leaf paper. Handwritten notes made by unknown author. Date on first notes paper is Sept. 7th - 1918. The student who kept this notebook included many drawings of implements and mechanical parts of airplanes. Also included in the notebook is "the Compound Nozzle Explained" a short 14 pages pamphlet from 1915. The student punched holes and added it to his course notes. The notebook covers two courses: Airplane Motors with Professor Hall and Plane School with Mr. Chedester. In the back of the notebook there is a bibliography a list of tools needed to apply for positions in an airplane factory and a long list of questions the student recorded to ask after lectures. Several clippings from magazines or other sources are included throughout. The student who kept this notebook would have been well prepared for a career in the U.S. Air Service or in a factory. According to the U.S. Labor Department Training Bulletin see below a graduate of the Y.M.C.A. Airplane Mechanics School could expect to earn between $35 and $50 per week to start up from $12 per week in nonessential industry. The training program lasted for 5 weeks 6 days per week. There was also a night program that lasted for 10 weeks. "The West Side Y.M.C.A. Airplane School was established in November 1917 with the object to supply a crying need for men with some knowledge of airplanes both in the Air Service and in the factories. At that time the Government made a call for 10000 airplane mechanics who were urgently needed for this service. In all probability there were less than 1500 mechanics in the whole country who had any experience with airplanes in the field. The Y.M.C.A. embarked upon an extensive advertising program using newspapers magazines and billboards. The results were most gratifying as the school has always had a waiting list regardless of the increased floor space and additional capacity. Inquire for more details. Y.M.C.A. Unknown Place: Unpublished 1931. The press called Blanche Stuart Scott 1884-1970 the "Tomboy of the Air" in celebration of her groundbreaking role as a pilot. In addition to being the first American woman to fly solo she was the first woman stunt pilot and the first to fly from coast to coast. The picture appears to have been signed at an airshow clearly after Scott's soloing days were over. The autograph in blue ink remains bright and unfaded--as is the snapshot itself. . SIGNED. Le Conquête de l’Air
This spectacular color lithograph commemorates the Grande Semaine d'Aviation of 1909 the first international public flying event and a turning point in aviation history. The powered aircraft featured at the event dominate the center. Surrounding it are portraits of pioneering figures in flight including Wright Curtiss Latham Fournier and Blériot and vignettes from aviation history.The event held at Reims France in August 1909 attracted more than 500000 spectators to watch famous aviators compete in contests of distance altitude and speed all from the massive grandstands constructed for the event. The meeting signified a transition in the public perception of flight. Once an experimental curiosity practiced by a few it came to be seen as a viable technology with the potential for practical application.This print a supplement to Parisian newspaper Le Petit Journal highlights technological advances in aviation history. The fall of Icarus is depicted in the upper right corner next to two unrealized designs for flying machines from the 17th century. Vignettes show the various hot air balloons of the 18th century and capture the 19th-century shift to airships capable of controlled flight.At the center the collection of heavier-than-air planes flown at Reims in the early 20th century point to the transitional nature of this pioneer era. In 1903 the Wright brothers achieved a twelve-second flight in their biplane; in 1909 technology had advanced enough for Louis Blériot to cross the English Channel in a powered monoplane. The array of airplanes shown in Reims exemplified this transformational period as Wright-style flyers and propeller-led monoplanes were featured side by side. The debut of lightweight more reliable engines at Reims also indicated the advances that were to come.The Grande Semaine showed that heavier-than-air flight was proven to be a viable technology full of possibilities. The next few decades brought the first major wartime use of airplanes the invention of the jet engine and growth of commercial aviation. Within sixty years man's "conquest of the air" had extended to outer space.This is a visually stunning record of a critical moment in technological history marking the beginning of modern aviation.
