Aviation. SMITH Captain Sir Ross and Lieutenant Sir Keith
Aerial Flight. England to Australia 1919. Capt. Sir Ross Smith KBE MC DFC. Lieut. Sir Keith Smith KBE . text at the head of a souvenir fan
Adelaide: John Martin & Co. Ltd 1920. Adelaide John Martin & Co. Ltd. 1920. A roughly oval-shaped piece of card approximately 240 205 mm stapled to a piece of wood as a handle 250 12 6 mm designed to be used as a fan; two small inoffensive tidemarks on the recto near the handle; one pinhole near the top edge; overall in excellent condition. The recto features sepia-toned circular portraits of the two brothers the text as above with the addition of the details of the two mechanics Bennett and Shiers the itinerary and a map all printed in blue with the route printed in red. The verso features a pictorial advertisement for the Adelaide department store John Martin's 'the BIG store "Where your Money goes Farthest"'. The story is probably too well-known to repeat but Trove makes easy work of it so why not: 'In 1919 Australian Prime Minister William Hughes offered a 10000 prize on behalf of the Australian government for the first Australians to fly an aircraft from England to Australia in under 30 consecutive days. Of the six teams that entered the race the winning crew and first to arrive in Australia flew in the Vickers Vimy G-EAOU bomber departing London on 12 November 1919 and arriving in Darwin 27 days and 20 hours later on 10 December 1919. They flew via Lyon Rome Cairo Delhi Calcutta Singapore and Surabaya in Indonesia where the aircraft became bogged and bamboo mats were placed on the airstrip finally arriving in Darwin. The crew consisted of South Australian pilots and brothers Captain Ross Macpherson Smith and Lieutenant Keith Macpherson Smith with mechanics Sergeants Walter Henry Shiers and James Mallett Bennett. The four men shared the prize money Keith and Ross Smith were knighted and Shiers and Bennett were awarded bars to their Air Force Medals and honorary commissions. After the flight the crew flew to Sydney and eventually returned to Adelaide in 1920 making many stops along the way for spectators to welcome home the victors'. The recto of the fan has 'Copyright Reserved' printed in the bottom right area which suggests to us that one of the entrepreneurial class may have canvassed any number of businesses along the victory route and sold the advertising space on the verso to more than just John Martin's. Aviation. HINKLER Bert GILBERT L. Wolfe and Abel BAER
Hustling Hinkler Fox-Trot Song. Lyric by L. Wolfe Gilbert. Music by Abel Baer
Melbourne: Allans 1928. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Melbourne Allans 1928. A piece of sheet music: overlapping colour-pictorial wrappers 8 pages including the covers the title song is on pages 3-5; contemporary ownership signature on the front cover; a few tiny edge tears; in very good condition overlapping colour-pictorial wrappers 8 pages including the covers the title song is on pages 3-5; contemporary ownership signature on the front cover; a few tiny edge tears a couple of larger ones are sealed; in very good condition. The song presumably commemorates Hinkler's historic flight in February 1928 the first solo flight from England to Australia 'And now he's home from o'er the foam . Bustling Hinkler rides all alone'. We say presumably because 'Copyright MCMXXVII by Leo. Feist Inc. N.Y.' is printed at the foot of the song; we can't explain the discrepancy with the dates. Offered with a copy of a biography of Bert Hinkler by Grantlee Kieza 'The Most Daring Man in the World' Sydney HarperCollins 2012; a large-format paperback in fine condition. 2 items. Aviation Australian Flying Corps. COBBY Group Captain Arthur Henry
A vintage photograph of Captain Arthur Cobby in the cockpit of a Sopwith Camel
A gelatin silver print 165 215 mm slightly creased in a top corner; light pencil captions on the verso; in excellent condition. The Australian War Memorial holds an example of this photograph C22559; it is reproduced online with the following detailed caption: 'Captain A.H. Cobby DSO DFC and two Bars sitting in the cockpit of a Sopwith Camel fighter aircraft. He was officially credited with the confirmed destruction in combat of twenty nine machines the highest number of any Australian airman of the First World War and therefore Australia's leading "Ace". Note the chequered paint scheme on this aircraft which indicated its pilot was an instructor at the time. Cobby noted that this was "the best Camel he could find" and he flew it regularly during his posting to Number 8 Squadron training at Leighterton'. Arthur Cobby 1894-1955 left the RAAF in 1933 with the rank of wing commander; he rejoined at the outbreak of the Second World War and was promoted to group captain and air commodore. In March 1944 he was awarded the George Medal for bravery; in May 1945 he was relieved of his command as AOC 1st Tactical Air Force on Morotai Island. Notwithstanding he was 'a man whose personal story is threaded through the entire history of Australian service and civil aviation' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. unknown

There are two each of Tetbury and Oxford and one each of Windsor Castle and Gloucester Cathedral. Four are captioned in the negative recording the location and date between 1 October and 25 November 1918; all have alpha-numeric reference numbers. The fifth photograph possibly a composite of several vertical images includes a printed caption 'Tetbury . 28-9-18 - 6000 ft'. The sixth item one of the views of Oxford has only the location written in pencil in the bottom margin. We purchased these photographs with a small group of aerial photographs of Leighterton Aerodrome one of the training airfields for the Australian Flying Corps in England during the First World War which may suggest their origin. 6 items. unknown

Aviation Australian Flying Corps
A vintage photograph of three biplanes from the training wing of the AFC in the air but probably based at Leighterton Aerodrome in England during the First World War
A gelatin silver print 216 166 mm lightly creased at the corner-tips; in excellent condition. The aircraft appear to be a Sopwith Camel and two Avro 504s specific models not determined. Offered with two other photographs of a biplane possibly a Sopwith Camel in the air: one is silhouetted above billowing sunlit clouds 147 199 mm printed without margins; the other is shown flying between clouds above hedgerows and fields 216 166 mm. We purchased these photographs with a small group of aerial photographs of Leighterton Aerodrome. 'By 1917 the Australian Flying Corps AFC consisted of four operational squadrons which outstripped the ability of the Army's Central Flying School at Point Cook to supply sufficient trained airmen. It was decided therefore to establish training squadrons within the AFC. Four such squadrons were subsequently established in the United Kingdom during 1917. 8 Squadron AFC was formed at Wendover on 24 October 1917. It was originally identified as 33 Australian Training Squadron Royal Flying Corps but was renamed along with all of the Australian squadrons in January 1918. The squadron relocated to Cirencester on 9 January 1918 and thence to Leighterton where it remained until disbanded in April 1919. The squadron's principal role was to prepare personnel for service with what was at first 71 Australian Squadron RFC and subsequently 4 Squadron AFC which was operating with British forces over the Western Front' Australian War Memorial website. 3 items. unknown

Aviation Sydney Harbour
A collection of fifteen vintage oblique aerial photographs of Sydney Harbour taken during the Second World War
Fifteen gelatin silver prints one 127 129 mm all others 134 139 mm slightly curled around the vertical axis; in uniformly fine condition Numbers pencilled on the verso of all but the small print include '/43' so we will suggest 1943 as the date. The only caption is a later one in ballpoint pen identifying Darling Harbour; there are another two featuring the same general area. Eight feature Garden Island prominently in all but one instance and four focus on Cockatoo Island; the former was a major naval base and the latter the main ship repair facility during the Second World War. Although the photographs are not credited given the nature of the images and the fact they were taken during wartime they were presumably taken with authorisation. Offered with the photographs is 'Sydney an Aerial Close-up' by Walter Brooks with photography by Neil Sutherland 1986; those familiar with Sydney in 2020 may derive some pleasure in drawing two comparisons. unknown

Aviation Australian Flying Corps
A vintage photograph captioned in the negative 'ARS. AFC Stroud 27/4/18' and 'Photo Comley' of a team of rugby players wearing ARS-branded jerseys with Australian servicemen in uniform behind them
An unmounted sepia-toned gelatin silver print 149 199 mm; in fine condition We suggest the eighteen members of the squad come from the Aeroplane Repair Section of the Australian Flying Corps based at Leighterton. We purchased this photograph with a small group of aerial photographs of Leighterton Aerodrome about which the Australian War Memorial has this to say: 'By 1917 the Australian Flying Corps AFC consisted of four operational squadrons which outstripped the ability of the Army's Central Flying School at Point Cook to supply sufficient trained airmen. It was decided therefore to establish training squadrons within the AFC. Four such squadrons were subsequently established in the United Kingdom during 1917. 8 Squadron AFC was formed at Wendover on 24 October 1917. An original pen and ink drawing by '1894 A/M Sid English ARS 1st Wing AFC 13.9.18' featuring a Sopwith Camel an RE8 superimposed over a map of Australia and ACMF and AFC insignia
The well-executed drawing is on good-quality watermarked paper 227 178 mm; apart from a drawing-pinhole in each corner and a short sealed tear to one edge the appealing item is in excellent condition. The artist is 1894 Air Mechanic Sydney English Aeroplane Repair Section stationed at the time at the Australian Flying Corps Training Depot at Wendover Buckinghamshire. He was a twenty-something iron founder from Northcote in Victoria when he enlisted on 27 April 1917; his artistic skills would appear to be innate. unknown

Aviation Western Front
A collection of ten aerial photographs taken during the First World War
All are gelatin silver prints on thick stock; eight are oblique photographs 207 154 mm; two are vertical views approximately 165 220 mm; the larger ones are slightly creased at the corners one of them a little more so; the others are in excellent condition. All images are captioned in the negative. All eight oblique views carry the same date 25 June 1918 preceded by 'A3 AEO 62' ranges from 110 to 121. Place names on them are Hamel Hamel Wood Somme Accroche Wood Tailloux Wood and Vaire Wood. The vertical images are dated 3 May and 27 June 1918 and carry a larger set of alpha-numeric references commencing 'A3 AE A 715' and '35 AE B 929' respectively. All ten prints have the signature 'Capt Sexton' in indelible pencil on the verso. Digitized service records indicate the signature is that of Eric James Sexton of the Adelaide suburb of Hindmarsh; he enlisted on 14 August 1914 and was appointed to the 10th Battalion with the rank of lieutenant shortly before his 21st birthday. He was wounded at the landing at Gallipoli promoted to captain the following day and later invalided back to Australia disembarking on 6 August 1915. By January 1916 he was declared fit again for active service and re-embarked in April for England where he performed various training roles. On 14 February 1917 he transferred to the Australian Machine Gun Training Depot with the rank of major. He embarked for Australia on 12 March 1918 arriving in Melbourne on 22 May 1918. Accordingly Sexton did not serve in France and was a major not a captain by the time these photographs were produced. We cannot explain the anomalies but will let the photographs speak for themselves. Importantly they show the area where the important Battle of Hamel was fought on 4 July 1918. 'Hamel was a big battle in miniature involving the experimentation of tanks and small ammunition drops as part of a broader all-arms offensive. While a coordinated offensive was not a new approach to warfare Hamel represented the culmination of three years of learning and innovation on the Western Front testing an all-inclusive approach to mobile warfare. The flawless execution of the operation resulted in Hamel becoming a model for future operations on the Western Front. In his account of the event Monash famously wrote that "the perfected modern battle plan is like nothing so much as a score for an orchestral composition where the various arms and units are the instruments and the tasks they perform are their respective musical phrases' Ellen Cresswell: 'The Experiment - Innovations at the Battle of Hamel' Australian War Memorial website. 10 items. unknown

Detailed report produced by the British mission named for the its leader Sir Alfred Hubert "Roy" Fedden sent to Germany to gather technical intelligence about German advances in aircraft and aero engines including key developments in jet technology and ballistic missiles. The British party rather trailed in the track of the American's Operation Paperclip whose agents had been on the ground weeks in advance some even crossing the Rhine with front line troops. Nonetheless a great deal of workable intel was gathered leading Fedden to strongly recommend that "the future of the best aeronautical research lay in German science. imploring the British establishment not to ignore the advanced German knowledge. but the British government and many of the learned men turned their noses up at creating a policy around the German science. The Americans and the Russians and the French had no such qualms." Cole Secret Wings of World War II.
