"Starting in the 1950s or before Bendix Pacific designed tested and manufactured hydraulic components and systems primarily for the military. In the same facility avionics and other electronic hardware was designed manufactured and documented in technical manuals. Much of this operation was relocated to a new facility in Sylmar CA where they had a large deep indoor pool for testing sonar. Telemetry components for the RIM-8 Talos surface-to-air missile included transmitters and oscillators in various frequency bands; the missile itself was designed and built by Bendix. They built and installed the telemetry system in all the ground stations for the first crewed space flights. For this program they developed the first cardio tachometer and respiration rate monitor system so that a ground-based physician could observe an astronaut's vital signs. MK46 torpedo electronics also came from this facility. Other diverse products included radar detectors in aircraft that identified ground missile tracking and ground missile launch at the aircraft. In the 1960s they produced an anti-lock brake system for military aircraft using established technology similar to Dunlop's earlier Maxaret. The technology is similar to the notched wheel and reluctor now used in cars. " from Wikipedi . Scintilla Magneto Division unknown‎

‎FUN HELPED THEM FIGHT‎

‎Washington D. C.: National Geographic Society. Very Good. 1948. Magazine. Color Photographs; This is a DISBOUND article from National Geographic Magazine. This is the actual article not a photocopy. The article is in Very Good condition. Text pages are clean bright and without chips tears discoloration or wear. They do however have the necessary staple holes where staples were removed. The article consists of five double-sided pages of text with accompanying photographs there are twelve color photographs. The article is about the artwork found on the airplanes flown during World War II along with some information about the naming of the planes used. The photographs included are quite clear and show some of the more intriguing pictures the pilot & crew artists drew on their planes. There is actually very little text as the article is mostly a fluff piece used to remind readers about the war but in our time the look at the artwork and a gander at some of the names used on the planes gives a real perspective to the war and the times. Pictures are of planes named : Nine O Nine The Goon Ave Maria Idiot's Delight Accentuate the Positive The Great Artiste Balls o' Fire Sweet and Lovely Hookem Cow MissBehave Picture Packing Mama and New York Central II. The Great Artiste was the plane A B-29 Superfortress which dropped an Atomic Bomb on Nagasaki. The photographs all seem to be from the U. S. Army Air Force. . National Geographic Society unknown‎

‎Ephemera [Aviation] [Lester D. Gardner][Advertising]‎

‎Advertising For Aviation And Aircraft Journal 1921 - A Letter Dated April 21 1921 With Two Off-print Excerpts From The Magazine Aviation And Aircraft Journal‎

‎New York: Aviation and Aircraft Journal. Very Good. 1921. Ephemera. Included in the envelope envelope letterhead is from the Gardner-Moffat Co. Inc. is a duplicated letter from Major Lester D. Gardner the president of the journal advertising the new journal with price incentives and information on editors and contributors. Also included are two off-print articles from the new Journal: entitled: What $598090781 Bought in War Aviation and Cost of War Aviation Only $598090781. "Lester D. Gardner who would become known as one of aviation’s elder statesmen concluded both needs could be met at once. He elected to publish Aviation and Aeronautical Engineering a journal of technical record that would adhere to rigorous standards of scholarship. Gardner was well placed to do this. He had taken a degree in engineering administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1898 and had studied administrative law for a year at Columbia University in 1900. He possessed valuable connections in business government and the military and counted among his friends some of the best aeronautical minds in the country. Glenn Luther Martin who was to become one of the country’s leading aviation industrialists had urged Gardner to found an aeronautical engineering journal. For many years Martin would back the magazine with steady advertising support. Grover Loening who had been the first U. S. Army aeronautical engineer and would found a famous airplane company advised Gardner on policy and would be largely responsible for the editorial course the magazine was to follow in its formative years. Together with A. Roy Knabenshue the pioneer balloonist Gardner had persuaded Orville Wright to rescue the Ood-damaged 1903 Kitty Hawk airplane from storage in Dayton Ohio. It went on public display for the first time in 1916 at MIT's new facilities in Cambridge only weeks before publication of the first issue of Aviation and Aeronautical Engineering." from Aviation Week network website . Harry Combs "lived and breathed the Golden and Jet Ages of aviation" according to the governmental U. S. Centennial of Flight Commission in a 2003 press release. The release stated that Combs saw his first airplane at the age of four-and-a-half and also in his youth was influenced by the book "Diary of an Unknown Aviator"—a World War I chronicle by Elliot White Springs. Combs' father Albert was shot down twice in World War I and was said to have warned his son never to set foot in an airplane. Nonetheless the young Combs paid $2.50 for a ride in a mail plane at the age of 13; then two years later inspired by an advertisement for $99 flying lessons made his way to St. Louis MO for three hours of flight instruction soloing immediately thereafter." .
