‎[AVIATION -- PHOTO ALBUM]. [ACKROYD, Hugh].‎

‎Proof Book: Portland to Portland Air Tour. . . photo album filled with over 200 silver gelatin photographs of the participants aircraft aerial photos and hijinks of 150 fliers and over 55 private aircraft flying from Portland Oregon to Portland Maine in May 1949.‎

‎Portland OR: Ackroyd Photography Inc. 2116 NW 20th Ave. May 1949. 4to. 88 pp unpaginated thin yellow-tinted paper w/ 215 original silver gelatin photographs sized from 3.5 x 4.5 in. up to 8 x 10 in. a number are 4.5 x 7 in. mounted with glue on the leaves stamped Ackroyd on versos each with negative number on verso some w/ negative numbers in fore-edge of image. Original tan softcover split-pin binder sewn at gutter margin w/ cotton twine occasional creasing to covers minor shelfwear some images w/ minor folds or creases especially those at gutter margins still a VG exemplar. This fascinating photographic proof book provides historic images of the first transcontinental private “Air Tour†following World War II and the lifting of aviation restrictions at the end of the War. With 1000s of returning fliers from the United States armed forces with flying experience Americans began taking to the skies in record numbers. Participants were able upon their return later to Portland OR go to the photographer’s studio and pick out which images they would like to purchase and add to their own souvenir books. On May 21 1949 the Portland Oregon Chamber of Commerce had organized an air tour which was similar to those which had heavily promoted civil aviation in the 1920s and 1930s from Portland OR across the continent to Portland Maine. Fifty-five aircraft plus a US Air Force C-47 assembled at Troutdale Airport and took off surrounded by the Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee. Ackroyd 1913-2012 noted aviation commercial photographer and aerial aficionado was contracted along with KGW Radio’s director of public events Bob Tomlinson and Earl Peterson technical supervisor to document the historic tour. These images show the 55 planes parked across the tarmac participants eating and loading their planes appearances by representatives from the 1949 Pendleton Round-Up including cowboys and Native Americans in native dress and the decidedly cramped quarters inside a few of the larger aircraft. Peterson and Tomlinson are shown setting up their equipment and broadcasting campy skits featuring the Grants Pass air club members in cave man costumes “kidnapping†and carrying off female members others in pirate costumes along with a tour of a B-29 superfortress. There are photos of aircraft taking off and landing at airports in Salt Lake City UT Cheyenne WY Wichita KS Indianapolis IN Akron OH Lock-Haven PA including the Portland Rose Festival plane float planes with all finally reaching Portland ME on May 28 1949. Upon arrival there was a huge lobster feast party featuring a map decorated cake and the fliers were met by Portland ME officials and Governor Frederick G. Payne. Ackroyd shows the welcome banners airport and the planting of gift roses in front of the Portland ME sign. Of particular interest are the series of aerial photos over Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City in 1949. Ackroyd was a Canadian photographer who began shooting photos at the age of 16 in British Columbia moved to Hollywood where he shot celebrity portraits but eventually moved to Portland OR before World War II and began shooting pictures of ships and barges for Gunderson Inc. and Shaver Transportation Co. He was adept at aerial photography and was well known for his images of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge from the air. ‎[AVIATION -- PANORAMIC PHOTO].‎

‎Maneuver Camp Ft. Sam Houston San Antonio Texas 1911. Large panoramic photo depicting the March 1911 United States Army maneuvers which featured 20000 troops with early US military aircraft such as the Wright Model B biplane as well as two others by Robert McCormick and Ben Johnson a San Antonio inventor flying above the camp.‎

‎San Antonio TX: H. Rudolph Fox Photographer 1911. One large panoramic photo. 48 x 7.5 in. captions scratched into negative at lower margin minor restoration to small portion at the very lower far right fore-edge minor creasing still a VG exemplar. This exceedingly scarce original panoramic photograph features the United States Army maneuvers in March 1911 and was one of the earliest such camps to coordinate with US Army fliers. Within the image the YMCA tent is identified as well as the placement of the field hospital field artillery the Signal Corps as well as the Depot Commissary in the foreground. Above three different biplanes are shown flying maneuvers including the Wright Model B flown by Lt. Benjamin D. Foulois who along with Phil Parmalee flew the first military reconnaissance scouting missions in a fixed-wing aircraft along the US-Mexico border; as well as planes flown by Robert McCormic an early Chicago aviator and inventor who would later construct and house several experimental aircraft at Fort Sam Houston as well as Ben Johnson a San Antonio inventor who flew a Johnson Wright Model B airplane. The Wright Model B was the Wright brothers’ most successful aircraft produced from 1910 to 1914 and they were shipping nearly 4 aircraft a month. Unfortunately the rear elevator made the Model B more tail heavy and prone to stall and within two years faster propeller first aircraft with drag-reducing fuselages began appearing. Fort Sam Houston was a very popular experimental airfield for flying meets air races because it occupied 800 acres and the field was unbroken by no hills of real prominence. Established in 1890 as a post the War Department began expanding the Fort after the Spanish-American War adding Cavalry and Light Artillery from 1905-1912 and also served as the birth of military aviation. Lt. Foulois had made his first solo flight the year before in March 1910. See: Edmond Percy Noel America Now Has Forty Flying Fields San Antonio Tex. ‎Jubilee album. 25th anniversary of aircraft production in the Moravan National Company In Czech Jubilejni album. 25. vyroci letecke vyroby v n.p. Moravan. Deluxe presentation photo album catalogue with 185 real photographs of the 25 year history of the company’s production of gliders racing aircraft and trainers which was recently renamed again the Zlin Aircraft Company.‎

‎Otrokovice: S. Kucera n.p. Moravan 1958. Oblong atlas folio. 19.5 x 14.25 x 2.25 in. 49 leaves of thick dark gray paper stock each leaf retaining original tissue guards. Title page & colophon in white ink calligraphy. 185 tipped-in real photos 46 leaves with tipped-in printed histories & descriptions matched to the tipped-in photos. Embossed & stitched padded leather post binding brown silk braid at gutter margin elaborate gilt embossed illustration & logo on front cover of Moravian Airplane w/ laurel leaf cluster around 25 LET slight shelfwear a fine copy. This spectacular and exceptionally large Soviet-era photo album offers an invaluable visual record of the 25 year history of the central European Zlin/Moravan Aviation Company. This amazing production is beautifully done and all of the photographs are quite crisp. The first 6 leaves illustrated with photos and text detail the history of the company from its formation in 1933 as the Zlin Aviation Company which was commissioned to build gliders by the Masaryk Air League since the major shareholder the Bata Company was not allowed by the Ministry in charge of aircraft production to produce powered aircraft. These early gliders were designed by the Czech aeronautical engineer Kryspin and included the Kluzak Zlin I Vetron Zlin II the Kluzak Zlin III designed by R. Dohnalek and then several designed by F.O. Mayer including the Kluzak - Zlin V VI the very popular Vetron Zlin VII -- Akela which was used throughout Europe as a racing glider and others. Zlin Aviation began producing powered aircraft finally in late 1934 and 1935 with prototypes of the Zlin Z-XII sport and two-seater trainer monoplane. The Z-XII trainer designed by Jaroslav Lonek became the most popular aircraft of its kind in Czechoslovakia and Germany during the 1930s eventually producing over 200 of them powered by Walter Mikron engines illustrated here in the catalogue and later with Persy I and Persy II engines. One of the images included shows the Z-XII at the 1938 races where the plane finished 29th. After World War II the aircraft were used by the Czech Army and as courier planes and were called the K-72 -- replicas of these are being built to this day. Just before the Nazis took over Czechoslovakia in 1938 the company experimented with producing a racing plane called the Letoun Zlin 13 but only 1 was built. After the Germans took over and renamed the company Zlin Aviation Enterprise they built 1 Letoun Zlin-20 which was to be a small two-engine passenger plane but it was quickly superseded by the need to produce the Bu 181 for the Luftwaffe which was the Z-181 Z-281 -- a two seat primary trainer which continued to be built for air forces around the world after World War II. They also produced a variety of gliders for the Luftwaffe and private individuals during the War. After the war the company was nationalized by the Communist Government and became part of the Automotive Enterprise and later renamed Zlinavion. In 1953 it was again renamed Moravan Company and began producing the very successful trainers and aerobatic planes used in aerobatic competition around the world. The Letoun Z-226 Trainer followed by the Z-326 which in this catalogue is still a prototype resulted in numerous different models and over 800 aircraft eventually built by the company and sold around the world. In addition the final leaf shows the Moravan Vrtulnik HC 2 a small 2-seater helicopter which also proved popular for the company. S. Kucera, n.p. Moravan, hardcover‎

First album is contemporary ribbed cloth post-binder tied at gutter margin with black silk cord some bumping wear bumping to corners fraying; second padded leather album rounded corners gilt lettering front cover slots in leaves for postcards minor bumping head & foot of spine edgewear; still VG- set. These remarkable photo albums furnish an indispensable visual record of the history of American aviation just after World War I at Kelly Field TX and Chanute Field IL. Almond Orwald Peterson 1901-1977 son of Norwegian immigrants was born in Twin Valley MN moved with his family later to Billings and Scranton ND enlisted in the Army after High School trained as a radio operator and airplane mechanic worked as a mechanic after his service in North Dakota and then Texas and finally worked in the oil fields surrounding Denver City TX. Kelly Field in Texas was one of the Army Air Service’s primary fields for training and deploying pilots during World War I. After the massive demobilization at the end of the War the Kelly Field and Chanute Field in Illinois served as essential training grounds for Army pilots to exhibit their skills holding air races balloon races and training technicians. All technical schools were joined with the mechanics school at Chanute Field in 1922 and were re-designated the Air Corps Technical School by 1924. These excellent photographs not only include detailed shots of the barracks the radio towers the equipment rooms servicemen and more but also encompass a vast array of the aircraft which flew in and out of these fields along with many aerial shots. There are photos of German Fokker triplanes French Spads Curtiss DH-4s many of the Barling Bomber the Witteman-Lewis XNBL-1 an experimental long-range three-wing strategic bomber which proved massively unwieldy because it was too underpowered with its six engines a colour-tinted image of the USS Los Angeles Zeppelin and several other lighter-than-air balloons and airships as well. In addition there are many photographs of plane crashes showing the high attrition and danger of flying during the 1920s often in World War I surplus aircraft and even a few images of funerals and caskets for lost comrades. ‎Extensively Annotated Album of Original Photographs of Aircraft from WWI to 1976.‎

‎Reno: N.p. 1976-77. A marvelously diverse album of 284 original color and monochrome photographs of the many military and civilian aircraft in use between WWI and ca. 1976. Each photograph with extensive and knowledgeable annotations in a very neat hand. Original two-post stiff board binding one post lacking and replaced by wire; very serviceable. Silver sticker for the National Air Races in Reno. Some fading to a few of the color photos but none have fallen out or are damaged. A meticulous labor of love.Near the front of the album is an award of appreciation by the Tucson Detachment of the Marine Corps League to Patrick Levy-Galleguillos for donated a WWII F-4 Corsair. to the Pima County Air Museum. We can safely presume that this is the compiler of the album. There is also a ticket to the 13th Annual West Coast Fly-In Santa Cruz 1977 pasted to the inner from cover. This cataloger can not make much sense of most of the annotations but to a aviation buff we assume them to be helpful. Many of the photographs were taken at the National Championship Air Races held in Reno in 1976 but the compiler traveled far and wide in the years 1976-77 to take these photographs. Open Houses at Air Force Bases and Naval Air Stations museums airports airplane graveyards etc. He also took photographs of mounted aircraft the type you see in front of an aviation museum. Among the places he visited were Bakersfield. Fresno Van Nuys Half Moon Bay and Mojave CA; Reno and Sparks NV; many from Kingman AZ. N.p. unknown‎

‎(AVIATION) BARLING, Walter H‎

‎Confidential Prospectus for the Formation of the Barling Aircraft Corporation.‎

‎Santa Cruz: N.p. ca. 1942. Original typescript 18-page rectos only document recounting the aviation design skills of Walter Henry Barling and seeking investors for his proposed Barling Aircraft Corporation. In a binder with an original 8 x 10 photograph of the Barling Bomber with its development crew standing in front of it with Walter Barling at the far right standing right next to General "Billy: Mitchell; William Lendrum Mitchell was a United States Army general who is regarded as the father of the United States Air Force.Walter Henry Barling was born in England and for a time worked as a designer for the Royal Aircraft Company there but soon immigrated to the United States. He was an engineer of the first order and was soon at work on experimental aircraft for the US government. While his contributions to the history of flight are many and varied he is chiefly remembered as the designer of the ill-fated "Barling Bomber." The Barling Bomber is generally attributed the press called it "Mitchell's Folly" to William "Billy" Mitchell a U.S. Army Air Service General and most vocal advocate of strategic airpower who in 1919 discovered Walter H. Barling who had previously worked for the Royal Aircraft Factory. Mitchell asked Barling to design a bomber capable of carrying enough bombs to sink a battleship. Mitchell's goal was to demonstrate the effectiveness of airpower by sinking a battleship from the air and needed a large strategic bomber in order to accomplish this feat. Mitchell projected the cost of two prototype bombers at $375000. On 15 May 1920 the Army Engineering Division sought bids for the construction of a bomber based on Barling's sketches with the requirement that it be capable of carrying a 5000 lb 2300 kg bomb load to an altitude of 10000 ft 3000 m at a speed of no less than 100 mph 160 km/h.23 Barling had all of its engines mounted level with the fuselage. The aircraft used three wings but was not actually a triplane. More correctly it was a two-and-a-half wing aircraft. The middle wing had no control surfaces and was shorter and narrower than the two primary wings. The top and bottom wings had a chord of 13 ft 6 in 4.11 m and each had a surface area of about 2000 sq ft 190 m2. The stabilizer and elevator surfaces were 575 sq ft 53.4 m2 with an 8 ft 2.4 m chord. The fins and rudders looked like a box kite and had a surface area of 250 sq ft 23 m2. The undercarriage consisted of 10 wheels including two wheels mounted towards the front of the aircraft to prevent a nose-over on takeoff and a tail skid. The gross weight of the bomber was 42569 lb. It had a fuel capacity of 2000 gallons and carried 181 gallons of oil. On 22 August 1923 the Barling Bomber made its maiden flight from Wilbur Wright Field in Fairfield Ohio. At the time it was by far the heaviest aircraft in the world and remains large even by today's standards. Although capable of carrying a 5000 lb 2300 kg bomb load it was soon discovered that the aircraft was seriously underpowered and performance was disappointing. When it failed to fly over the Appalachian Mountains the program was discontinued. Many historians point out its influence in the development of the great bombers of WWII; the B29 and B17.But Walter Barley's aviation career did not end there. He turned to civil aviation and designed a three place low wing high performance monoplane which could be made by quality production methods such as those used in Ford Automobile plants. This craft was to become the well known NB3. It was put into manufacture by the Nicholas Beasley Airplane Company. There are two pages extolling the excellence of the NB3. Barling soon felt that another larger ship was in order so he designed the Barling B6. It was built flight tested and made ready for manufacture. In 1931 due to hard times in the business world the plant that was to build the B6 shut down. Barling purchased all the drawings specification lists valuable dies and jigs and had them shipped along with himself and his family to Santa Cruz California. In California he did some consulting work for J. H. McCollough and the two eventually in 1939 decided to form the Barling Aircraft Company. The remaining pages are a plea to investors stating that they can build great numbers of reliable and inexpensive NB3 and 6s. The final two page are marked "Confidential" and are a list of Barling's demands salary etc should some entrepreneur decide to foot the bill and actually fund the Barling Aircraft Company. Apparently William Barling never found a backer and he spent the rest of his life in Santa Cruz where he died in 1965. N.p. unknown‎

‎(EARLY AVIATION: TRADE CATALOG)‎

‎Wire of Quality: Referring Particularly to that Used in Aerial Navigation.‎

‎Trenton NJ: John A. Roebling's Sons Company. First edition. Small octavo. 24 pp. with a plethora of photographic illustrations. Publisher's sewn blue printed wrappers with a window in the front cover to display a biplane aloft. Small marginal tear not afecting any text. A very good copy. None located by OCLC. The Roebling's history in Trenton dates to 1848 when John A. Roebling purchased 25 acres of land in Chambersburg Best known today as the "father of the Brooklyn Bridge" Roebling and the company he founded supplied cables from Trenton to most of the major suspension bridges built in United States during the first half of the 20th century. Among the dozens of major bridges using Trenton-made cable are New York City's Williamsburg Manhattan and George Washington Bridges as well as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.Roebling Lofts converted the "Clark Street Rope Shop" Building 101 erected in 1917 during WW I. It was an ultra-modern facility for its time with massive windows and a fire resistant design. It replaced an older factory that burned down in late 1915 allegedly by German saboteurs. Building 101 specialized in light- and medium-gauge wire rope such as used in aircraft. Perhaps the factory's most famous customer was Charles Lindbergh who specified Roebling wire for The Spirit of St. Louis the plane he flew non-stop from New York to Paris in 1927. This has been called the single most influential flight in aviation history excepting the 1903 first-flight by the Wright Brothers who also used Roebling cables for bracing wings. Lindbergh used Roebling products for control cables to brace the wings for the ignition harness and the plane's lightning rod. The testing lab for the aircraft business was located on the 4th floor of the Clark Street factory including a massive machine designed to simulate stresses on wings. The machine survives in place on the 4th floor and is being preserved in a lounge for use by residents of Roebling Lofts. John A. Roebling's Sons Company unknown‎

Photograph measures 3 x 2 1/2 inches. It is in the original frame and with the original label on the verso which reads; "This is an authentic photograph taken in Grand Rapids 1915 of P. G. B. Bud Morris at the controls of his Benoist Flying Boat accompanied by his Chief mechanician Tony Stadlman who later became Superintendent of the Lockheed Airplane Company of Burbank." Together with an original stickpin for the school in brass and blue and with an image of a biplane. It reads "Bud Morriss Airplane School Chicago 1916." The original celluloid covering the photograph is still present. Rare mementos of an early and influential aviator and his aviation school.Percival George Brockhurst Morriss 1884-1944 a native of England learned to fly at Brooklands racetrack in 1909. Soon after that he came to the United States. A former assistant engineer in the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company he championed the use of wireless to communicate with airplanes in flight. Later the same year he learned to fly a Bleriot in England and then joined the Curzon aviators. In 1914 he operated a flying boat service on the Chicago lake front and in the same year was managing editor of Aero & Hydro an aviation weekly paper. In 1915 he opened the Bud Morriss Flying School in Chicago. His next venture was with the Benoist Aeroplane Co. of St. Louis serving successively as assistant pilot and instructor Chief instructor and finally as vice-president and sales engineer. In 1917 he served as a member of the Chicago Aero Commission. During the First World War he enlisted as a seaman in the Navy in which he served for 18 months. Upon discharge Morriss was executive officer of aviation schools at a naval air station. Anthony Stadlman was in 1886 in Bohemia. He emigrated to the United States from his home in what was then Czechoslovakia in 1906 ispired by news of the aviation work of Orville and Wilbur Wright. By 1910 he was helping to build flying machines at the Chicago School of Aviation. For a short while he was chief engineer at the Bud Morris Aviation School. The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation originally called the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company was organized in the summer of 1916 by brothers Allan and Malcolm Loughead. Their plant was located in the rear of a garage on State Street in Santa Barbara. Tony Stadlman met Allan Loughead on a Chicago airfield and became superintendent of manufacturing when the company changed its name to Lockheed in 1927. Bud Morriss Airplane School unknown‎

‎San Antonio: H. Rudolph Fox Photographer 1911. Original photograph measuring 48 x 7 1/2 inches. Large panoramic photo depicting the March 1911 United States Army maneuvers which featured 20000 troops with early US military aircraft such as the Wright Model B biplane as well as two others by Robert McCormick and Ben Johnson a San Antonio inventor flying above the camp. . captions scratched into negative at lower margin minor restoration to small portion at the very lower far right fore-edge minor creasing still a a wonderfully clean and clear image. Fort Sam Houston was a very popular experimental airfield for flying meets air races because it occupied 800 acres annd the field was unbroken by no hills of real prominence. ‎Flying School Detachment Souther Field Ga. Composed of Squadrons A B C and D.‎

‎Jacksonville FL: John A. Coles Jr. 1919. Original panorama photograph of all the members of the four squadrons in front of a modified Curtiss J4. It measures 47 3/4 inches x 8 inches. Archivally matted. Excellent.Souther Field is the oldest continuously operating civilian airport in the United States that participated through military use on both World Wars. During WWI 500 cadets earned their wings here arriving 25 at a time and training for a period of two months. In 2009 it was renamed the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport. Perhaps the most famous aspect of this airport was its relation to hero aviator Charles Lindbergh. In April 1923 Charles Lindbergh arrived at South Field and purchased his first plane for $500 although he was not yet a pilot. His connection to aviation prior to this was that he was a "wing-walker" and a parachutist in an aerial circus. He bunked at the airport until his plane was finished after which he took his first solo flight and developed his piloting skills from flights out of Souther Field. After becoming proficient he departed for a life of barnstorming. Four years later in 1927 he became the first person to make a non-stop transatlantic flight cementing his status n the annal of aviation. John A. Coles, Jr. unknown‎

‎(EARLY AVIATION)‎

‎Salon De l'Aeronautique 1913.‎

‎Paris: L'Auto 1913. First edition. Bifolio 16 3/4 by 24 inches. Now separated into two leaves but complete. Photographic illustrations. Very good.A free newspaper supplement detailing the 1913 Air Meet in France. The third page bears photographic illustrations of the winners and include; Monoplane Nieuport; Monoplane Morane-Saulnier; Biplan Breguet; Hydravion Borel; Biplan H. Farman; Monoplan Bleriot; Hydravion M. Farman; Hydravion Caudron. There are alos photographic portraits of 10 pilots including one woman: Mme de Laroche. Born on 22 August 1882 in Paris Elise Raymonde Deroche was the daughter of a plumber. She had a fondness for sports as a child as well as for motorcycles and automobiles when she was older. As a young woman she became an actress and used the stage name "Raymonde de Laroche". Inspired by Wright's demonstations of flight in Paris in 1908 she decided to become a pilot. "In October 1909 de Laroche appealed to her friend aviator and aeroplane builder Charles Voisin to instruct her in how to fly. On 22 October 1909 de Laroche went to the Voisin brothers' base of operations at Chalons 90 miles east of Paris. Voisin's aircraft could seat only one person so she operated the plane by herself while he stood on the ground and gave instructions. After she mastered taxiing around the airfield she lifted off and flew 300 yards. De Laroche's flight is often cited as the first by a woman in a powered heavier-than-air craft; there is evidence that two other women P. Van Pottelsberghe and Thérèse Peltier had flown the previous year with Henri Farman and Delagrange respectively as passengers but not as pilots. On 8 March 1910 de Laroche became the first woman in the world to receive a pilot licence when the Aero-Club of France issued her licence #36 of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale International Aeronautics Federation or F.A.I." Wiki.L'Auto was the main French sports daily issued from 16 October 1900 to 17 August 1944 . Founded under the title L'Auto-Vélo 1900-1902 by its founder director Henri Desgrange this organized the Tour de France. It was banned from publication in 1944 because it was considered favorable to the German Occupation. L'Auto unknown‎

‎(AVIATION)‎

‎Lawson Aircraft Industry Builder.‎

‎Detroit: Humanity Publishing Compnay 1937. First edition. Quarto. 304 pp. Profusely illustrated from photographs. Publisher's faux-morocco green cloth with yellow lettering to front and spine. Lettering a bit faded but a very clean and attractive copy.Comes with three original photographs of a plane in service to the Lawson Air Line an unusual looking biplane with a very large covered cockpit at the front of the plane. This volume definitely is more than the cover would indicate. The ads in the back are a major clue although there is a hint in the publisher's notice: "The call of the Public for full information concerning the life and deeds of ALFRED LAWSON as well as the high prices asked and paid for books and documents relating to his connection with the establishment of the AIRCRAFT INDUSTRY and AIRLINES has created the necessity for this book."The book is primarily a compilation of other articles written by Lawson about the aviation world in general. But the ads in back tell another tale. One touts: "LAWSONOMY - Alfred Lawson - coined the word LAWSONOMY for his greatest work and has dissected the appellation as follows --- LAW - Stands for the procedure of God's Eternal acts. / SON - Stands for the continuity of the procedure of God's Eternal acts. / OMY - Stands for the process of the continuity of the procedure of God's Eternal acts." The next page introduces "The First Lawsonomy Baby. The Perfect Baby." and her parents ".who gave birth to a perfectly balanced physical and mental Baby."Another ad touts "Lawsonomy: The Base of Absolute Knowledge." It includes principles such as "Lawsonomy is based upon life as it is and not upon a theory of what it ought to be. Truth is Constructive and lives but falsity is destructive and dies. Truth is real and eternal but falsity is ephemeral and abortive. Truth breeds strength and intellect but falsity breeds weakness and smart-alick-ism." The symbol in the center of the page shows Lawsonomy at the center and everything eminating from it - music art heredity culture photography penetrability history radio drama prophecy navigation electricity evolution and much much more. At the bottom: "If it isn't Truth it isn't Lawsonomy."Born in 1869 Alfred Lawson declared his birth to be ".the most momentous occurrence since the birth of mankind." He claimed that he was "destined for greatness" and "If Lawson should die today posterity will honor and glorify him as no other mortal because he has given mankind the true base from which to start an edifice of super-knowledge of the universe and its laws."Lawson tried his hand at professional baseball failing as a player as well as on the business side his newly created leagues folding almost as quickly as they were started - one within a month. He then decided to publish two aviation magazines Fly and Aircraft although he knew nothing about publishing or aviation - and Lawson acknowledged that in 1908 only three men could fly - the two Wrights and Glenn Curtiss but he downplayed their accomplishments noting that the latter could only travel in short hops. He did however become the aircraft industry's most vocal "evangelist" touting air travel as the travel of the future.Lawson had many strange ideas including the notion that physics and economics were inseparable and one could not be understood without the other. His physics however was based on even stranger principles based on "Suction" and "Pressure" and including other principles such as "Penetrability" but he saw the concept of "Energy" as a complete fabrication and fallacy. Many other weird concepts flow from these such as achieving a balanced "state of maturity" in the body "Equaeverpoise" through a combination of diet hygiene rest and exercise that would allow one to live 200 years. In part because of his "success" - he failed at baseball he failed at running an airline his books do not appear to have flown off the shelves - by 1943 Lawson decided to found a school - devoted to studying Lawsonomy. Lawson's books were the only ones allowed on campus. The biggest problem was the program took years other problems include the usefulness of the studies!. One was expected to take interim exams in 10 and 20 years and a comprehensive exam after 30 years at which point one became a "Knowledgian." Unfortunately Lawson was the only Knowledgian at the time of his death and it took a Knowledgian to bestow that degree on others. One could then go on as their post-graduate work to study Lawsonian religion. Humanity Publishing Compnay hardcover‎
