The 31 issues that comprise this collection are in very good clean condition. A beautiful route map showing Atlantic Pacific West Coast and Mediterranean routes of the firm is the work of Edouard Collin. Aluminum Company of America. 1943. Color map 20 x 17 1/2 inches on sheet 24 x 33 1/4 inches folded as issued to 8 x 5 3/4 inches. This fold out pamphlet issued by Alcoa Aluminum is an excellent example of the importance of maps and mapmaking in the United States during World War II. America was suddenly keenly made aware that the "Aviation Age" had had consequences for the geographical position it occupied vis a vis Asia and Europe. The column to the left of the map clearly sets this out in its discussion of the "new kind of projection": "The big map in the center of this sheet is a new kind of projection of the entire surface of the earth which has been developed to give a more nearly accurate conception of air directions and distances. It is called an Azimuthal Equidistant Projection or more simply a North Polar Projection.This kind of map shows the whole world continuously and it has the big advantage that straight lines between two points in the northern hemisphere the central part of the map lie quite close to the actual Great Circle route." Around the border of the map are displayed the airplane markings on planes of different countries. On the verso are more insignia for US Army Navy and Marines and silhouette illustration so friendly and enemy planes. Pamphlet 8 3/4 x 4 inches unfolding to a full color map approximately 24 x 34 inches depicting the United States and Mexico and the routes flown by the airline's "Astrojets" and propeller aircraft. Striking images of the company's aircraft appear in the lower left corner of the map. Verso of map features text extolling the amenities offered passengers and details relating to American's growing fleet of jet aircraft as the company phases out its piston driven airplanes DC-6 and DC-7 etc. Very good condition. This is the January 1965 edition of a series of "Welcome Aboard" brochures published over the years by American. In this iteration a primary objective of the extensive text blocks on the verso of the map is to reassure passengers new to the experience of jet travel thus we have panels headlined "What Makes a Jet Jet" and "Why Planes Fly." Other panels wax lyrical on amenities designed "For Your Comfort" including an astonishing passage on "Those Wonderful Washrooms." Additional panels focus on the Flight Crew including paragraphs on the rigorous process involved in hiring "Your Stewardess.about 7 of 250 applicants make the grade." Further details regarding "Your Stewardess" detail the rigorous parameters pertaining to weight height and age; also "A young woman must be unmarried to qualify as a Stewardess candidate." Although the brochure is less than 50 years old it clearly evokes a vanished world so far as air travel is concerned as demonstrated by the brochure's jaw-dropping assertion that "it is the intelligent progressive people who use air transportation."
