‎Li Mu‎

‎Waves of the Blue River: Survival and triumph through one of history's greatest crimes in China‎

‎São Paulo, self-edited, 2017. One octavo softcover book of 228 x 154 mm, 118 pp. Many black and white pictures throughout the book. Translated from Chinese to English by David Curtis Wright with the author's help. SIGNED by the author on the half-title page. A heart-wrenching and powerful story about a Chinese man who overcame many hurdles to escape an authoritarian government to ultimately land in Brazil, where he and his family fared well in peace. "Born in 1933, Li Mu, pseudonym of Dr. Yeung Chi Bor, is a Chinese-Brazilian doctor and acupuncturist. He grew up in the Chinese province of Guangdong under the Chinese Communist Regime. Targeted by the authorities as 'landlords', Yeung and his family were persecuted, defamed, tortured, and had their possessions confiscated. His father was executed and he was sent to labor camps. Throughout his struggle for survival, Yeung bore witness to one of the worst atrocities in history. He ultimately escaped as a refugee into Hong Kong in 1962 and, in 1977, made a great leap into the unknown, immigrating to Brazil at the age of 44. Dr. Yeung has three daughters and one son, and lives with his wife in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais."‎

‎This copy was obtained from the author himself and remained in a cabinet since then. Like new.‎

‎LI HUAIYIN‎

‎Village China Under Socialism And Reform: A Micro-history 1948-2008‎

‎Stanford University Press Stanford: 2009. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Village China Under Socialism and Reform offers a comprehensive account of rural life after the communist revolution detailing villager involvement in political campaigns since the 1950s agricultural production under the collective system family farming and non-agricultural economy in the reform and everyday life in the family and community. Li's rich examination draws on original documents from local agricultural collectives newly accessible government archives and his own fieldwork in Qin village of Jiangsu province to highlight the continuities in rural transformation. Firmly disagreeing with those who claim that recent developments in rural China represent a radical break with pre-reform sociopolitical practices and patterns of production Li instead draws a clear history connecting the current situation to ecological social and institutional changes that have persisted from the collective era. "The book is the product of impeccable scholarship a combination of rigorous archival research and extensive fieldwork. Huaiyin Li's firsthand knowledge and personal connections have enabled him to probe a village community's 'informal and often invisible structures' and he has persuasively demonstrated the critical role that those 'subinstitutions' have played in determining the direction of Party-peasant relations in Qin village a microcosm of village China during the PRC's first 60 years."Pauline Keating The China Journal "Huaiyin Li provides a comprehensive and systematic study of rural life after the founding of PRC . the book is refreshing in its theoretical perspective compelling in its arguments and meticulous in the extensive details it presents of peasants' lives and production in rural China."Jin Di China Quarterly "Based upon extensive use of rare local documentation as well as the author's intimate familiarity with his own local community this well-crafted analysis of rural evolutionary transformation in east-central China deserves a wide reading."CHOICE "Drawing on intensive fieldwork in his native village Huaiyin Li's book is the first to reconstruct and analyze the grassroots political economy of a Chinese village in the Maoist and post-Mao periods. Well written and insightful it illuminates what Chinese farmers have faced in their daily lives." Jonathan Unger Director Contemporary China Center Australian National University "Throughout the book Li skillfully interweaves contextual information and quantitative data recovered from documents rarely explored by students of contemporary China. this is a well designed and admirably executed work that sets a new standard for the study of the political economy of rural China. Readers will find it informative and inspiring."Journal of Chinese Political Science Huaiyin Li teaches modern Chinese history at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also the author of Village Governance in North China 1875-1936 Stanford 2005. Stanford University Press, Stanford: 2009 hardcover‎

‎Li Ang‎

‎Bureaucracy and the State in Early China: Governing the Western Zhou‎

‎8vo, br. ed. pp.400. Ancient Chinese society developed a sophisticated and complex bureaucracy which is still in operation today and which had its pristine form in the government of the Western Zhou from 1045 to 771 BC. Li Feng, one of the leading scholars of the period, explores and interprets the origins and operational characteristics of that bureaucracy on the basis of the contemporaneous inscriptions of royal edicts cast onto bronze vessels, many of which have been discovered quite recently in archaeological explorations. The inscriptions clarify the political and social construction of the Western Zhou and the ways in which it exercised its authority. The discussion is accompanied by illustrations of the bronze vessels and their inscriptions, together with full references to their discovery and current ownership. The book also discusses the theory of bureaucracy and criticizes the various models of early-archaic states on the basis of close reading of the inscriptions.‎

‎Li Feng‎

‎Early China‎

‎'Early China' refers to the period from the beginning of human history in China to the end of the Han Dynasty in AD 220. ‎Reinventing Modern China: Imagination and Authenticity in Chinese Historical Writing‎

‎8vo, hardcover in dj. This work offers the first systematic analysis of writings on modern Chinese history by historians in China from the early twentieth century to the present. It traces the construction of major interpretive schemes, the evolution of dominant historical narratives, and the unfolding of debates on the most controversial issues in different periods. Placing history-writing in the context of political rivalry and ideological contestation, Huaiyin Li explicates how the historians’ dedication to faithfully reconstructing the past was compromised by their commitment to an imagined trajectory of history that fit their present-day agenda and served their needs of political legitimation. Beginning with an examination of the contrasting narratives of revolution and modernization in the Republican period, the book scrutinizes changes in the revolutionary historiography after 1949, including its disciplinization in the 1950s and early 1960s and radicalization in the rest of the Mao era. It further investigates the rise of the modernization paradigm in the reform era, the crises of master narratives since the late 1990s, and the latest development of the field. Central to the author’s analysis is the issue of truth and falsehood in historical representation. Li contends that both the revolutionary and modernization historiographies before 1949 reflected historians’ lived experiences and contained a degree of authenticity in mirroring the historical processes of their own times. In sharp contrast, both the revolutionary historiography of the Maoist era and the modernization historiography of the reform era were primarily products of historians’ ideological commitment, which distorted and concealed the past no less than revealed it. In search of a more effective approach to rewriting modern Chinese history, Reinventing Modern China proposes a within-time, open-ended perspective, which allows for different directions in interpreting the events in modern China and views modern Chinese history as an unfinished process remaining to be defined as the country entered the twenty-first century. About the Author: Huaiyin Li is professor of modern Chinese history at the University of Texas at Austin, USA.‎
