The Great Qing was the second major Chinese empire ruled by foreigners. The southern theater proved a more difficult challenge for Japan because of its enormous size diverse terrain and poor infrastructure but Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek made a formidable stand that produced a veritable quagmire for a superior opponent�a stalemate much desired by the Allied nations. In the first book to cover this southern theater in detail David Macri closely examines strategic decisions campaigns and operations and shows how they affected Allied grand strategy. Drawing on documents of U.S. and British officials he reveals for the first time how the Sino-Japanese War served as a "proxy war" for the Allies: by keeping Japan's military resources focused on southern China they hoped to keep the enemy bogged down in a war of attrition that would prevent them from breaching British and Soviet territory. While the most immediate concern was preserving Siberia and its vast resources from invasion Macri identifies Hong Kong as the keystone in that proxy war�vital in sustaining Chinese resistance against Japan as it provided the logistical interface between the outside world and battles in Hunan and Kwangtung provinces; a situation that emerged because of its vital rail connection to the city of Changsha. He describes the development of Anglo-Japanese low-intensity conflict at Hong Kong; he then explains the geopolitical significance of Hong Kong and southern China for the period following the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Shanghai 1790. Folio. 17 1/8 x 12 3/4 inches. 20 original watercolour and bodycolour drawings 14 x 11 1/2 inches and smaller on Chinese paper mounted one to a page. Mid-19th century dark red morocco gilt covers with an elaborate gilt border of two thick fillets flanking a highly decorative roll with cornerpieces of large square stylised flower-heads the border enclosing a large central panel blocked in semi-relief with highly elaborate panels to an overall Adam-influenced design centering on an oval with a large flowerhead within a lozenge this panel filled with stylized scrolling foliage and flowerheads the spine in five unequal compartments each gilt with numerous small tools the third compartment with a design centered on a shaped lozenge the others with a repeat design of a broken oval with numerous small tools elaborate gilt turn-ins white watered-silk textured paper endpapers damascened steel clasp gilt edges. A fine early collection of beautifully composed images in a style that recalls traditional Chinese compositions whilst also making allowances for the differing Western taste of the European patrons who supported a thriving school of highly talented natural history artists in Shanghai from the late 18th century onwards. The drawings are all on Chinese paper suggesting an early date. From about 1800 onwards the Shanghai artists were generally supplied with English wove paper often 'Whatman' paper. The supposition of an early date is also supported by the style of drawing which still shows strong traces of the traditional Chinese style of painting. The artist or artists of these drawings have not yet learned to portray their subjects according to the western notion of a 'botanical drawing' - i.e. with samples of the fruit or seeds and perhaps a dissection of a flower to show its structure. This collection forms part of what was to become a well-established tradition of almost exclusively anonymous Chinese artists working in and around the coastal trading ports producing work for Western patrons more particularly the members of the East India and Dutch East India Companies. The best of the drawings are arguably a match for anything that Western botanical artists were producing at the time. The quality of the album into which these drawings have been carefully mounted suggest that at an early date their outstanding quality was recognized. The subjects include a striking amaranthus a mallow tree peonies narcissi prunus begonia iris one watercolour including an unidentified bird and a very fine image of a spray of wild white dog-rose being visited by five bees and three butterflies. unknown

Here at last is a completely revised and expanded edition of this classic sourcebook compiled by noted China scholars Wm. Theodore de Bary and Irene Bloom. Updated to reflect recent scholarly developments with extensive material on popular thought and religion social roles and women's education this edition features new translations of more than half the works from the first edition as well as many new selections. Arranged chronologically this anthology is divided into four parts beginning at the dawn of literate Chinese civilization with the Oracle-Bone inscriptions of the late Shang dynasty 1571-1045 B.C.E. and continuing through the end of the Ming dynasty C.E. 1644. Each chapter has an introduction that provides useful historical context and offers interpretive strategies for understanding the readings. The first part The Chinese Tradition in Antiquity considers the early development of Chinese civilization and includes selections from Confucius's Analects the texts of Mencius and Laozi as well as other key texts from the Confucian Daoist and Legalist schools. Part 2 The Making of a Classical Culture focuses on Han China with readings from the Classic of Changes I Jing the Classic of Filiality major Han syntheses and the great historians of the Han dynasty. The final part The Confucian Revival and Neo-Confucianism details the revival of Confucian thought in the Tang Song and Ming periods with historical documents that link philosophical thought to political social and educational developments in late imperial China. In 1902 the first Chinese chamber of commerce appeared in Shanghai. By the time the Qing dynasty ended over 1000 general chambers affiliated chambers and branch chambers had been established throughout China. In this new work author Zhongping Chen examines Chinese chambers of commerce and their network development across Lower Yangzi cities and towns as well as the nationwide arena. He details how they achieved increasing integration and how their collective actions deeply influenced nationalistic reformist and revolutionary movements. His use of network analysis reveals how these chambers promoted social integration beyond the bourgeoisie and other elites and helped bring society and the state into broader and more complicated interactions than existing theories of civil society and public sphere suggest. With both historical narrative and theoretical analysis of the long neglected local chamber networks this study offers a keen historical understanding of the interaction of Chinese society business and politics in the early twentieth century.
